Flaming Lips Live

Recommended Posts

My excitement is palpable.

I have just bought tickets for my wife and I to attend the Lips' show here in Sydney in July.

We have never seen them live before.

After we saw Leonard Cohen earlier this year we felt as though we had just seen something akin to the Sermon on the mount.

Will there be similar such epiphanies with a Flaming Lips show?

It's like a giant birthday party.

That's awesome.

The Flaming Lips hold a unique place in my concert-going experience. Disclosure: I like the band, but I'm not a real fan, so I've never gone to see them. But, I've seen two shows at which they were the opening act - Porno For Pyros in 1994, and Beck in 2002 - and both times I happened to enter the venue and find my seat just as the Lips were finishing up their set. So I've seen them twice, both times in 5 minutes installments. At the 2002 show, shit was crazy - confetti, animal suits, etc. I was like 'So, I guess I should've gotten here a little earlier.'

Its one of the best shows I've ever seen. I've seen them three times now. The Transmissions tour, the Soft Bulletin Tour and Yoshemi. Its almost indescribable. Its passionate, crazy, hilarious and amazingly loud. The first time I used cigarette butts as earplugs. Its like being a kid in an adult body. I think I'm gushing at this point, but its incredibly fun.

They are one of my biggest regrets, having passed on seeing them when they were in Cork a few years ago. I was so pissed off for months after at not having gone.

The day that I saw the Flaming Lips might be the happiest day of my life. It's so exhilarating to see--the (aforementioned) costumes, confetti, balloons, strobe lights, fog, Wayne in the bubble, and a crowd full of people just having fun...

I saw them at Lollapalooza 3 years ago, and the coolest part about it (to me) was having a sing along with several thousand other people in the middle of a park in Chicago. Loudest thing I ever heard!

Have fun--let us know what happens!

I saw them after their last album. It was by far one of the best shows I've been to (not that I've been to many). Be aware that it's more than just a concert, so if you're just looking for pure musicianship, you're really not going to be a happy camper. It's more about the show and the experience, giant balloons, absurd quantities of streamers and all. That said, I went in not knowing anything about how the Lips were live and I came out thrilled.
