Sir Stewart
I'm thinking of a weekend visit to Montreal with my wife. Neither of us has been, but from stories we've heard, we have a vague image of a cool, beautiful city.Do you know of any cool spots to hit up there (I hate looking at tourism web sites - I can never trust them. VCers I can trust!). Any advice would be appreciated (hotel, restaurants, museums, parks, pubs, bookstores, etc.).Merci.

Montreal is an amazing city.I will try to write a bunch of suggestions later when I have more time, but for now I will say this - go to old montreal, and go to the steak house gibby's, and have one of the best steaks you will ever eat. hit up some of the bars on crescent, and st catherines street. Sir Stewart
Thanks man. This is a longshot, but - has anyone ever camped around there? I found one site that's a 15-minute drive from the city for about $35 a night. Seems like a plan, but still just throwing it out here in case...

I'm busy at work, so im just quickly jotting down things as i think of them.Old Montreal is beautiful. Also, I highly suggest pub st elizabeth. It has a great, lively outdoor patio. They have a website, I believe if you google it.
W(TF)
Definitely Old Montreal and Boul St.Denis are nice places to walk around. So is Mont-Royal (the mountain). The BYOB restaurant area around Duluth St is pretty cool, I like this place a lot. Also don't forget to hit one of the original bagel 'factories' in Outremont. Long lines on a Sunday morning but it's worthwhile. Great city. I believe the jazz festival starts in a few weeks or so too.
lizish
Yes - the old city is beautiful. I would also definitely hit both St Denis and Crescent Street. Good (extremely indie) gig list can be found on Stillepost http://stillepost.ca/boards/index.php?board=6.0 There is usually some kind of festival going on from Pop Montreal, to the comedy and jazz fests. Never camped there unfortunately. I would imagine that you're not going to find pristine wilderness close to the city, but outside to Mount Tremblant, Ste Anne, Gatineau or the eastern townships there will be tons of provincial parks. http://www.bonjourquebec.com/ca-en/recherc....php?cat5=40916 and prov park listing: http://www.sepaq.com/index-en.html#adbanner-picture(7)

mfwahl
SS, I used to go up there quite a bit. One bar I would always make sure to stop in is Brewtopia. They brew their own beer, have decent live music. I've never seen it too crowded or dead. Just a really good vibe. Hopefully it's still around.
TCP
Leave your wife at home, there's suppose to be a lot of beautiful women in Montreal.
