Permission to cover "Lonesome wind that blows"

Recommended Posts

Working a record for self-release and really want to cover this song, if only because i want more people to hear it. Any ideas on how to get permission?

Well, If I was doing this, I would start with Tony Margherita Management. http://tmmchi.com/

You'll probably eventually need to contact Bug Music, http://www.bugmusic.com/, which I believe publishes Tweedy's music under his publishing company, "Words Ampersand Music." (BMI) http://www.bugmusic.com/viewclient.aspx?IM=23503 Or maybe Broadcast Music, Inc. http://www.bmi.com/ I'm not really sure how the industry works.

Good luck!

You will not be able to cover it until Jeff Tweedy does it. I have tried this in the past and got this response from Nora Guthrie:

Dear John,

I received your request through Bug Music. Unfortunately, as Jeff Tweedy is a co-writer (music composer) on the song, he has first option to record, which he plans on doing. That's why your request was denied.

Once the original composer has recorded a song, then others can release covers. But for now, until Jeff releases it, we have to deny your request.

Thanks for your interest in this beautiful song...

All the best,

Nora Guthrie

Does this mean that jasonwalston can also play it live, but not record it for release?

i was under the impression that anybody can play anything live, hence - cover bands. I rly doubt jeff is going to release it, as he hasnt performed it in 9 years, but if he does, thats probably cooler than me releasing it anyways.

also, can i have nora's email/contact? thanks. -jason

you can cover any song live, but venues do have to pay ASCAP royalties still

small Bars/Venues just pay a flat ASCAP fee usually though, while larger venues submit royalty payments if a band covers another artists song.

the flat fee is usually pretty minimal (like $3 for a show full of local acts) from what i've seen

An excellent point and a very touchy issue for some. A jazz club in Kansas City got closed down b/c of this.
