History of Rock for a 5 year old

Recommended Posts

So, I was shocked last night when I realized that my nearly 5 year old knew almost all the words to Bobby Darin's "Splish Splash." He's always picking up song I'm singing. I love hearing him sing Alejandro Escovedo's "Castanets". He's been listening to a CD at night of these classic rock songs, unfortunately, it's one of those damn CDs with horrible musicians and kids singing the vocals. i want to put a disc together for him of the original songs and other classic early rock and roll songs from the late 50s and early 60s. Here's a list I came up with today. What do you all think? Anything you'd add?

  • Splish Splash - Bobby Darin
  • The Twist - Chubby Checker
  • Rockin' Robin - Bobby Day
  • Blue Suede Shoes - Elvis Presley
  • La Bamba - Ritchie Valens
  • Teddy Bear- Elvis Presely
  • Lollipop - The Chordettes
  • Peppermint Twist - Joey Dee and the Starliters
  • Johnny B Good - Chuck Berry
  • Louie Louie - the Kingsmen
  • Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly
  • That'll Be the Day - Buddy Holly
  • Rave On - Buddy Holly
  • Not Fade Away - Buddy Holly and The Crickets
  • Roll Over Beethoven - Chuck Berry
  • Twist and Shout - The Isley Brothers or The Beatles
  • Do You Love Me - The Contours
  • Let's Dance - Chris Montez
  • Route 66 - Churck Berry
  • Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On - Jerry Lee Lewis
  • Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
  • Tutti Frutti - Little Richard
  • Long tall Sally - Little Richard or The Beatles
  • Do You Wanna Dance? - Bobby Freeman
  • Good Golly Miss Molly - Little Richard

Cool list! I'd add:

Eddie Cochran: C'mon Everybody, Somethin' Else, Twenty Flight Rock

Gene Vincent: Be Bop A Lula

Richie Valens: Ooh, My Head (then when your kid gets into Zeppelin they'll know where Boogie With Stu comes from.)

Everly Brothers: Wake Up Little Suzie

These are pretty much all songs I loved as a kid. Good choices! I'll put in a plug for my very favorite song when I was three (your son may not be too old for it!): "Help Me, Rhonda" by the Beach Boys. I also fell in love with "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King when I was six. Still love it, actually.

I was coming here to post about The Ramones. They were one of my kids' favorite bands when they were around 4 and 5.

It really is perfect music for kids that age: great melodies, high energy, simple structures. Just great rock 'n roll, really.

Although, I don't think that your wife would appreciate you teaching your kid songs like "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue", "I Wanna Be Sedated", or "Beat On the Brat". So... be careful! ;)

Bobby Fuller Four - I Fought the Law

or even...

Bobby Fuller Four - Let Her Dance

(Now a good choice because of its inclusion in the movie The Fantastic Mr. Fox. God bless Wes Anderson and his great taste in music!)

The one thing about nearly all the songs listed here....they are really old. Ah for the good old days when rock and roll WAS kids music. Hell even I was a kid when some of these songs came out (and a teen when the rest came out.)

So, I was shocked last night when I realized that my nearly 5 year old knew almost all the words to Bobby Darin's "Splish Splash." He's always picking up song I'm singing. I find it fascinating that the music that was deemed so dangerous and inspired an entire generation of musicians in the 50's seems so quaint now.

I wonder what the "Oldies" or "Classic Rock" stations will sound like in 30 years?

Exactly the same....

Oldies will always be stuff from the 50s and early 60s and classic rock will still be the later 60s to 70s to maybe early 80s.. They will have to come up for some other name for the so called genres that are being played now. There are alternative stations playing stuff from 70s and 80s and 90s and there will be stations that play old school hip-hop, etc, or more likely there will be NO more radio in a few years.

Oldies was an instant type of music. As soon as things changed with the music industry in the 60s, the music of the 50s and early 60s instantly turned into oldies. There have been oldies stations for decades and they play pretty much the same thing, with only a small amount of updating. People like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and such were nostalgia acts by the early 60s.

There's no chance of that. Radio will always be around. How else are you going to find out about all the amazing rebates at your local car lot while you're driving to work?

Even if commercial radio proves to be a financial loser, colleges will not give up their radio stations any time soon. And if/when they do give up on it, the hobbyists will take over.

That means radio is likely heading into another golden age. I hope I live to hear it.
