Shug
We are getting ready to drive up to Colorado from Arizona to see the show this weekend. Its only going to be my second time seeing Wilco, the first was in Memphis 2002 on the roof of the Gibson Guitar factory. I've really gotten into Wilco since the Ashes of American Flags DVD, I think the band was in a really great place on that tour and I'm hoping its gonna be more of the same in 2010. I'm wondering, since this show is kind of all by itself in time and not part of a bunch of shows close together, if Wilco are gonna come out firing on all cylinders or if its gonna take them some time to get warmed up and loose. How do they usually do after some time off? Maybe a lame and impossible to answer question, but I'm pretty excited for the show and I'm hoping they will rock out. Anybody else going to this show? I'm not going to this show, unfortunately, but I don't think you need to have any concerns that they'll be rusty. They just played at Solid Sound Festival on 8/14 and it was fantastic as usual, plus Jeff's been doing lots of solo shows recently. They're gearing up for the second (or is it third?) leg of a European tour, and rumor has it that they're working on new material as well--hopefully, they'll be recording after the European tour. Read some of the entries on this site about the Solid Sound Festival. It seems to me that the boys are all in fine shape and rarin' to go! Plus, Jeff seems really energized and happy lately, maybe taking some inspiration from his work producing the new Mavis Staples album. Although I'd go see Wilco or Jeff Tweedy anytime and anywhere (budget permitting--a big caveat!), all things considered I thijnk I'd rather see them during a one-off concert like this. You might get a more spontaneous, unpredictable set. (Not that they're ever stodgy or predictable, but you know--it's a matter of degree.) It's hard to imagine that they can top the "Evening With" shows this spring, but to my ears they just keep getting better and better. I envy you. Have a great time!! IATTBYB
Good Lord, I just checked out the weekend's schedule and saw the GLENN FREY AND JOE WALSH are headlining Saturday night! What are the chances that the Wilcos stick around for another evening and join the former Eagles for a rousing and crowd-pleasing version of "Hotel California"? radiatortunes
Anybody else going to this show? Hey Shug...we're flying to Denver tomorrow and driving to Snowmass Friday morning. We last saw the band in Feb during the "Frozen Tundra" leg of this year's tour. Travel safely and enjoy the show!

Shug
Thanks, glad to hear that one-off shows might have interesting setlists and that Wilco are probably still on a roll from recent summer shows. Yeah, those 38 song setlists from the "evening with" shows look monstrously good. With shows like that (two long sets, and multiple encores with multiple songs in each) I think Wilco can claim the title of hardest working band in rock, having taken it away from Springsteen! I don't think we're gonna get that at a festival, but even their regular setlists are very long. I'm hoping to hear Monday and Kingpin, although it looks like they haven't played the later in awhile. I'll do what I can to report back after the weekend, if someone hasn't beat me to it.

I am also heading to see Wilco this weekend! I just saw Jeff in St. Louis last weekend and it was nothing short of awesome. Jeff was in great spirits and seemed to have a lot of fun at that show. Everything I've read and heard from Solid sound was all positive and great! I hope that this trend of random setlists continues... Wishful Thinking is currently the top request on WilcoWorld. Muzzle of Dan
Can't find the request section on WilcoWorld. Link? Thanks! If you go to shows on the website and then click the link to buy tickets, a box pops up that gives you the option to request a song or buy tickets. Once you request a song, it then shows you the top requests for the show.

What are the chances that the Wilcos stick around for another evening and join the former Eagles for a rousing and crowd-pleasing version of "Hotel California Arizona"? Fixed it for you Probably very low, though that should be the song they play together.
faxman75
Nevermind Walsh, Frey or the Black Crowes. The lineup you have for the day Wilco is playing is phenominal. Calexico opened up for Wilco on the Ghost is Born tour and I have become a huge Calexico fan. They are absolutley fantastic live. I also see Devotchka on the list. Another unique band who plays awesome indie folk music. They are from Colorado and they are multi instrumentalists as well. An aboslutly fantastic bill! If I was going I would just be seeing those three bands lol.

The Eagles are washed up, IMO, but if you haven't checked out The Black Crowes' live show in awhile, you might want to consider it before you write them off, especially the acoustic sets they've been doing on their current tour and their new "acoustic-live-in-the-studio" career retrospective, Croweology. For me, the three best live bands in rock today are The Black Crowes, Wilco, and My Morning Jacket (highly subjective and indicative of my taste for roots-based, soulful, 70s-ish ensemble rock music) I'm looking forward to checking out Calexico. I've never seen them, even though they are from AZ where I live right now. I'm not too into Balkan/Eastern European folk rock, but maybe Devotchka will surprise me. thejokeexplained
I'm not too into Balkan/Eastern European folk rock, but maybe Devotchka will surprise me. I wasn't either, until i saw them play Red Rocks a two years ago. On that bill was Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, Devotchka and the Old 97's. and IMO Devotchka stole the show. But they are from Denver and it was the first time they played that venue which might have had a bit of a influence on their performance that night. I saw them later the next year in a small club in Dallas and it was still a great show.

Devotchka might surprise you and I can't argue with your live bands in rock. If anything I would add bands to that list. Not many, just a few.

Guest Speed Racer
(Not-so) shockingly terrible article. Glaring omissions. Seriously, "keyboardist Jay Bennett"? "Ancient" radio? "Old radio broadcasts"? Did a 19 year-old write that part of it? Thankfully, there was no rising from any ashes.

"Old radio broadcasts"? Did a 19 year-old write that part of it? Thankfully, there was no rising from any ashes. Not such a bad article at all, in my opinion. Sure, some omissions and small (maybe judgment) errors, but it wasn't the New York Times, either. And the interview portions were good and occasionally illuminating. A worthwhile read, I thought. Calexico, boring, Devotchka, excruciating! The New Mastersounds, however, were great. They played a side stage and are devotees of The Meters and Booker T and The MGs. Funky jazzy 60s R&B instrumentals, really a great vibe and a fun dancing scene.
