bböp
I was going to leave this to someone else, but OK... The Capitol was, for me, a pretty ideal space with standing room on the floor and a decent-sized balcony so that those who wanted to stand could stand and those who wanted to sit could sit. I bet there weren't too many bad views in the house. As I was saying to some friends, it can often be a fine line between too sterile an atmosphere and too rowdy and I think this show balanced the two quite well. Unlike the previous night in Düsseldorf, which I think drifted a bit too far on the sterile side, the venue was good enough acoustically that I could hear the intricacies in the music but also still felt like I was at a rock show. So that was great! The encore certainly brought the rock, and for me, it's really a great ending to the show when they finish with this sequence. There was sort of a funny moment when the stage went completely dark for about 20 seconds at the start of Red-Eyed. I guess you sort of had to be there, but it was just kind of awkward in a silly way. But from then on, all was good -- especially with the Hoodoo closer and the reappearance of Josh the bass/keyboard tech on cowbell. Even though he kept his shirt on this time, no one plays a cowbell quite like him. Here was the complete setlist, as played: "The Price Is Right" theme music intro—Wilco (the song) (w/band intros)Ashes of American FlagsCompany In My BackIATTBYHBull Black NovaYou Are My Face>A Shot in the ArmOne WingImpossible GermanyPoor Places>Spiders (Kidsmoke) (acoustic arrangement; Nels on electric)MisunderstoodIt's Just That SimpleHandshake DrugsHeavy Metal DrummerJesus, etc.You Never KnowWalkenI'm The Man Who Loves You---------------------Hate It HereRed-Eyed and Blue>I Got You (At The End of the Century)>Outtasite (Outta Mind)>Hoodoo Voodoo (w/bass and keyboards tech Josh on cowbell)

bböp
Now that's quite an encore . Yeah, das ist rock! P.S. I totally forgot to mention that it was so great to get to hang out in the queue and during the show with my friends 50footqueenie and better half and mdpoet and namaste (a/k/a The Poets--I think this moniker could really catch on!). And of course, the beloved pillowy star and her beloved, who are without a doubt the best hosts a guy could ever hope to have!
pillowy star
That sums it up pretty well, as usually. Thanks Paul I thought I was kinda out of rock shows, but after last night I have to say "Thank God I'm not". What. A. Fantastic. Show. The Capitol is my favorite venue meanwhile, we go to a lot of shows there, and the acoustic really never fails us. Ok, front row middle isn't the best spot to judge about that, but it was still great so you get the picture Too bad we can't go to more shows this year, but everyone who's still got a show coming up: You're in for a real treat. This band just seems to get better and better. (Josh aka Voodoo Man is my new favorite band member )
El Bacho
The Capitol was, for me, a pretty ideal space with standing room on the floor and a decent-sized balcony so that those who wanted to stand could stand and those who wanted to sit could sit. I bet there weren't too many bad views in the house. It was a rebuilt synagogue that was turned into a concert hall, so the balcony was there for the women to see the celebrations and the architects were quite skilled at doing this. It was destroyed in 1938 during Kristallnacht then rebuilt after 1945 but it was now too big for the Jewish community in Offenbach and they quickly moved to a smaller building across the street. I don't have too many points of comparison for the current tour but, of course, I was quite amazed by the chain of "Being There" songs during the encore, the easy listening version of "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" (sounding as you imagine the band playing the song as a cover in their "regular" style), I also dug John during "It's Just That Simple" (it shows how much has been done performance-wise since the first album). I also didn't expect "Poor Places". The sound was as tight as always ("Misunderstood" was also breathtaking when there was only Jeff on guitar) and Glenn is getting a master at silently nodding in disapproval when Jeff talks too much to the audience. H.Stone
...and the reappearance of Josh the bass/keyboard tech on cowbell. Even though he kept his shirt on this time, no one plays a cowbell quite like him. For some reason I had a feeling his reappearance was imminent. I could feel it. Sounds like a great night! Preferred B
And of course, the beloved Pillowy Star and her beloved, who are without a doubt the best hosts a guy could ever hope to have! Ohh! The gauntlet has been thrown! What do The Poets think about that?
bböp
Ohh! The gauntlet has been thrown! What do The Poets think about that? Now why are you always trying to rouse the rabble? Haven't talked to the Poets today, but of course I'm certainly not trying to make any comparisons. Everyone has been really gracious to me, so thanks all around. Certainly the Poets are stellar hosts, as is my friend samuel_70. Really anyone who's willing to put up with me falls into the "best hosts a guy could ever hope to have" category. But it was a special treat to be able to visit pillowy star on her home turf...
Preferred B
You know I'm just teasing! You're a master of diplomacy, P. I wish I'd been able to hang with the all-star lineup of fans. Glad to hear Josh is back on cowbell. And thanks, El Bacho - very interesting to hear about the venue's history.
H.Stone
I'm not even at these shows, and I miss Sonny Feeling in the lineup. I hope it's only experiencing a temporary hiatus. Maybe they'll throw it in for the Berlin show?
pillowy star
Hehe Brianne I've only just had the pleasure to meet the poets for the first time, but I am determined to gatecrash their place asap, seeing as they're about the nicest new people I've met in a long long time It was really awesome to hang out with Paul in my beautiful hometown on the sunniest day we've had in about 11 weeks, and that way I will hopefully finally get some decent photos of its most remarkable spots *hint*

H.Stone
Can't wait for our next show together, Poets! And let's hope that afterwards we don't have to walk the county to find a place to drink beer and play pool!
