Shakespeare In The Alley
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKT1P7x_PzoLikely always gonna be the best cover ever, as far as I'm concerned. Lanegan's version is great, but Cobain blows him away.

GtrPlyr
This has to be a candidate for best cover ever. Pretty sure I read that Dylan thought this was the definitive version of the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bng3agUOYiI Neil Young has done some great versions of this song too. PopTodd
I agree and was going to post it myself. But I figured some things go without saying. Like Aretha Franklin's cover of "Respect" by Otis Redding.Yeah, I didn't realize that she wasn't the original artist either until a few years ago. I'd say her version of that song is even more definitive than Jimi's version of "Watchtower".

PopTodd
"Generation X - Gimmie Some Truth"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwmwGiM7XEkSorry, Lennon fans, but this version is MUCH better than John's original version.(I just wish that I could find the original album version on YouTube, but alas... This is still pretty close.)

tinnitus photography
this is a cool cover, and the first time i'd heard of the Groundhogs...excellent guest guitar work by none other than Nick Saloman (aka the Bevis Frond).
a-me-with-a-you
I put together three twenty-song mix tapes recently of all covers, and this is by far my favorite of them all.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvxIbLf-7ig
PopTodd
One of my favorite songs of all-time. While most folks who know this song know it as a Dave Edmunds song, it was actually written by Jim Ford, and I am more familiar with it as a Brinsley Schwarz song. (And theirs is my favorite version.) Still, this is a pretty good version. Loves me some Webb.(The song performance begins around 1:40 or so.)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6zv_NXv2yA
Oil Can Boyd
It's not really a cover because it's just a snippet but I recently listened to an old episode of This American Life and it included David Sedaris singing the Oscar Mayer bologna song in the voice of Billie Holiday. Man did I laugh ...
