Any Marshall Crenshaw fans out there? I think he's really a great, underrated and under-talked about songwriter. I heard a great quote about him that he just came along at the wrong time, and in any other decade, he probably would have had more success. Plus, he graduated from the same high school I did, and is a much cooler claim to fame than Booger from Revenge of the Nerds.

Anyway, if you aren't familiar with Marshall, I'd suggest these tracks:

You're My Favorite Waste of Time

Whenever You're On My Mind

Someplace Love Can't Find Me

As you can see, the man can write a hell of a catchy pop song. Not to mention he also co-wrote this:

Curious to hear what VCers think.

Yeah, I saw him in New Haven at Toad's Place back in 1985. I actually had all his early albums before the time of CDs. I never replaced his albums with the CD editions so I haven't really listened to him in quite some time. I think he played John Lennon in the original Beatlemania if I'm not mistaken. Thanks for the post. I was looking for some different music to download and a few of his songs might do the trick.

This is my favorite...

I saw him at the Nectarine Ballroom my freshman year at U of M in the early 80's. That might have been the last time I paid any attention to him. He does write some catch pop tunes, if that is your cup of tea. And I always heard that he played Paul in Beatlemania.

Definitely a fan, although, for no particular reason, I lost some interest about ten years ago. "Someday Someway" and "Something's Gonna Happen" were always among my favorites.

I love his first record, played that quite a bit when I was younger. Watched a solo acoustic concert of his on TV a few months back, he still sounded pretty good.

He is a great songwriter, but I think that even more overlooked than that, is the fact that he is a great guitar player, too. The guy can just flat-out PLAY.

Huge fan. He's put out consistently listenable records for almost thirty years. He's great live, too.

His debut is one of my all-time favorite records. Not a bad track on it. Not even a middling track. Everything's great.

Would love to have seen him playing Lennon in Beatlemania. Maybe there's film.

"Someday, Someway" is on the short list of perfect power pop songs.

Perfect.

I actually made a mix tape for the wife a few months ago and put that one on there. Catchy as all hell.

I am also a fan. Saw him when his debut came out in the early 80s and he was as good as the record. Saw him again in the last couple months when he was touring with the Bottle Rockets. Hopefully he will tour the east coast with them this spring or summer. Very fun. The Chicago show was lightly attended but it was still fun, even though they were a bit rocky (not in a good way) because of a huge show in St. Louis the night before that took place in a snowstorm.

I have a bunch of his LPs and a couple later CDs, but I do think the first couple are the best (including the Field Day remix EP.)
