Best Wilco Lyrics?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I didn't remember your nickname. Sorry. lol

I also have a special prejudice for those albums for a couple other reasons: 1) I'm a writer myself & 2) I discovered Wilco by way of a 1998 Jeff Tweedy solo show, so the lyrics of some of those songs were already kicking my ass before I even heard the official releases.

That's really cool, how did you end up at a Jeff Tweedy solo show if you weren't a Wilco fan? Did you tag along with a friend?

I was pissin blood>

The lyrics on wilcoworld read: "And it was piss and blood". I think it'd be super badass if it was "I was pissin' blood". One of my favs as well!

Not to derail this thread, but the person who mentioned their befuddlement at some fans' dislike of SBS should read these. There were no lyrics of this caliber on that album. These great quotes are mainly from ST, BT, AGIB & YHF, the four greatest albums in the Wilco discography.

Oh, the band marched on in formation

The brass was phasing tunes I couldn’t place

With a sky blue sky

This rotten time wouldn’t seem so bad to me now

I am looking forward toward the shadows tracing bones

Our faces stitched and sewing, our houses hemmed into homes

No one wins but the thieves, so why side with anything?

A ceiling fan is chopping up my dreams

I am looking forward toward the shadows tracing bones

Totally forgot about You Are My Face, the lyrics to that are unreal.

Mainly because I am a dog lover...

when dogs laugh some say they’re barking

I don’t think they’re mean

some people get so frightened

the fences in between

I would say the entire set of lyrics for Spiders as well.

I'm glad someone posted that, if I did, it would have been a little redundant (;

"Drag your blanket blindly

And fill your heart with smoke"

For me conjures a mental picture of a usually ever-optimistic Linus van Pelt, crushed and heartbroken.

I've always loved that too! And these:

There's a random painted highway

And a muzzle of bees

You were right about the stars

Each one is a setting sun

I'm down on my hands and knees every time the doorbell rings

I shake like a toothache when I hear myself sing

All my lies are always wishes

I know I would die if I could come back new

Every lyric chosen has merit. The one that sticks with me was the first that struck long ago....

I live my life like I wasnt invited

Something in Candly Floss, beyond the roller coaster Beach Boy throw away sound, something in that line said that Tweedy's struggles with life and love, at least as reflected in song, was connecting to the way I think and feel. Or is it the other way around?

Jeff Tweedy writes the most amazing lyrics but some that always stand out:

"If this were still new to me I won't understand, Impossible Germany unlikely Japan."

"You were right about the starts, each one is a setting sun"

"I feel some connection between you and me. Well I guess that's some direction maybe you can't see."

"You keep dealing with all of these feelings like they got you believing they have no meaning, but they do."
