Lee - started at about five till eight and played about 35-40 mins

Wilco started a little before 9 and ended a little before 11. But Jeff made a few comments on how they were running out of time, so I wouldn't be surprised if everything moved up a bit tomorrow

what were the start and end times for wilco and lee? i'm trying to plan my trip to wolf trap tomorrow.

I heard curfew was at 10:55 p.m. tonight and that's exactly when Wilco finished. Not sure why they would change anything for Night 2. Wolf Trap is sort of a weird place...pretty strictly run. Perhaps a local can elaborate more. But the schedule was pretty tightly adhered to, it seemed to me (and I seem to remember that from last time as well). Maybe it has to do with being a national park (i.e. under federal supervision)? Anyway, the set times were more or less as stated above: Lee Ranaldo Band 8:00-8:30 and Wilco 8:55-10:55.

FYI Nels came out and played with Lee and his band for most of their set, so definitely try to get there early if you want to check that out. He really added a lot, as he does on the record itself... :thumbup

Unfortunately, because of time reasons, Wilco had to cut quite a bit of its planned encore. On the printed list I saw, Airline To Heaven and Christ For President were scratched as the first and third songs of the encore, respectively, and the band also scrapped Red-Eyed and Blue>I Got You>Outtasite in favor of Hoodoo Voodoo to close the show.

Jeff did promise to play mostly different songs on Night 2, "so if you didn't like tonight, come back tomorrow night." At the very end of the show, related to coming right up against curfew, I think Jeff also mentioned the Paul McCartney/Bruce Springsteen curfew incident that happened over the weekend in London, but I couldn't hear his entire comment. Did someone catch all of what he said?

i think the curfew has more to do with the surrounding area. it's northern virginia, so you're never far from a residential area. the national park status probably doesnt help. its a nice venue (and the fact that you can bring food and drinks is awesome) but the early curfew is a bummer.

anyways, good to know. i definitely dont want to miss lee, with or without nels.

those scrapped encore songs look nice. wouldnt mind a few of them making it into tomorrows setlist.

Very fun show last night. The crowd seemed really into it and remained standing for nearly all of the show. At least where I was (row f, right side). The only time people sat down was during One Sunday Morning. Not bad for a bunch of old farts.

It got up to 100 degrees yesterday, but Jeff still came out in a black shirt, black jacket and big hat. He must have been dying of the heat.

Regarding the curfew, it was kind of funny. At one point about an hour into the show, Jeff said something like, "Don't worry, we have plenty of time" The next few times he spoke he said, "We're running out of time"!!!!

The highlight for me was the one-two punch of Too Far Apart and I'm Always In Love. I hadn't seen the first one before and it's been a while since I've seen the second.

It'll be interesting to see what they do tonight. I'm hoping for no repeats!

Phenomenal show, as always, and interesting set list. Was surprised their weren't more Mermaid Ave songs with Woody's 100th b-day, maybe more tonight. No songs from Wilco the album, and I wish they'd play more Summerteeth tunes. Art of Almost was smokin', becoming a real highlight, and Too Far Apart/Always in Love was indeed a highlight, among many. Encore was great, thought they might segue from Hoodoo Voodoo into I'm a Wheel, as they often do, and I thought, hey they have time, it's not 11:00 yet and it's a short, fast song, but maybe the curfew really was 10:55. The reason for curfew is indeed the nearby residential area. Can't wait for night two!

I've been to numerous shows at Wolftrap and it has a very firm 11:00 pm curfew. Last night, Lee started at 8:00 sharp and ended, by my watch, at 8:32. Wilco then started at 8:58. I suspect that if the band is concerned about time and wants to get in another song or two, it will start a few minutes earlier. I was not watching super close but it looked to me like the stage was set and ready to go by 8:50.

I'm a bit surprised at the late start time considering they have an opening act. Too late to do anything about it now, but in retrospect, they maybe should have had showtime listed as 7:00 or 7:30 to give the opener and headliner time to do their thing.

I think the curfew thing is a little overblown. First, curfews are common and known well in advance. The band could have set an earlier start if they wanted. Second, I went back and looked at the posts after the 09 Wilco concert at Wolftrap. The very first post includes this: "The 11:00 curfew cut this one short, as they seemed to scramble to get equipped to play Wheel. If anyone saw the setlist, what songs did they cut out?" By my rough and quick count, the number of songs at both shows seem about the same (give or take a song). I think we might be giving too much weigh to Jeff Tweedy's comments about time (which, as Bart noted above, were inconsistent) and (as also noted above) were likely influenced by the McCartney/Springsteen incident in London last week.

[On the other hand, 2 hours is a little shorter than most Wilco concerts. And I think it is shorter than the concert last year at MPP (http://viachicago.org/topic/46293-wilco-9-25-11-merriweather-post-pavillion-columbia-md/).]

As for the concert itself, I'll probably have a better take after I hit tonight's show but I loved Art of Almost last night and the two Woody songs in the encore. I was surprised that there were empty seats (including what looked like a big block on the upper, stage left section of the pavilion). Also, based on wholly unscientific experiences with the re-sale market for tickets for the show, I think that there was less demand for tickets (i.e., prices were lower on Craigslist, tickets were harder to re-sell, less movement here). Nonetheless, the crowd around me (row K) seemed very into the show and mostly stood the entire show.

Figured I'd also post the Lee Ranaldo Band setlist, in case anybody cared:

Angles

Off The Wall

Hammer Blows (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar)

Xtina As I Knew Her (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar)

Shouts (w/Nels Cline on lap steel)

Fire Island (Phases) (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar)

Nels had a pretty stellar night, IMHO. In addition to helping Lee's band flesh out its sound, he really shone on the Ashes and Impossible Germany solos. After IG, Jeff said something like, "Nels Cline, everybody. ... It's funny, during Lee Ranaldo's set, there was a guy playing with them that looked just like him." :lol

Wolf Trap is notoriously hard-ass on its curfew, it's for real, so it is problemmatic to have an opening band there and a show that starts at 8, they either need to start earlier or do another "Evening with Wilco" (PLEASE!!! That tour sans opening acts, 3 hour shows, no break, going into and out of the acoustic songs with set changes, was unreal!). Another thing they could do is bag the encore break, just keep playing, get another song in rather than bothering to go offstage for 3 minutes and come back on. Nels was smoking on Ashes and IG, but also playing rythm on some other songs too. As usual though, he wasn't loud enough in the mix!

I thought it was an interesting, somewhat eclectic setlist, and a lot of my faves got played so no complaints, except they really COULD get away with not playing HSD, HMD, ITMWLY and Hate it Here damn near every show (i've seen them seven times now the last three years and i'm pretty sure they've played all those songs at every one, plus other shows i've listened to in various places).

Anyone else notice they played 0 songs from Being There and from Wilco the album? The first seven songs alternated between Whole Love and YHF, kinda cool. 2 Mermaid Ave (more tonight I hope, play the whole dang album, or both of them!), 2 A Ghost is Born, 3 Summerteeth, 2 AM, 6 Whole Love, 5 YHF, 2 Sky Blue Sky.
