gogo
Don't know if anyone saw this: I don't have a link to it, but the Westboro Baptist Church released an amazing press release about a week ago, calling Vassar College "the whorehouse of the Ivy League", and stating that "the men and women who attend this filthy institution are wholly given over to the fag agenda". As a Vassar alum, I can confirm that this is all true, aside from the fact that VC isn't Ivy League, it's one of the Seven Sisters. Vassar's response has been absolutely lovely: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/12/vassar-westboro-protest_n_2671924.html http://www.crowdrise.com/vcfeb28 http://president.vassar.edu/announcements/2012-2013/130212-wbc-response.html If you haven't been following this story, I highly recommend checking it out on the 28th, the date of the planned protest. I understand that WBC often gets a bit of publicity from a press release like this, then doesn't actually follow through with the demonstration. But even if they don't show, I'm guessing that whatever response Vassar's got planned for that day will be worth watching, anyway.
e_wind
It always shocks me to see how badly WBC's portests backfire on them. People do so much good out of hatred for WBC. Jokes on them, I guess.

Jokes on them, I guess. I really wish there was some way for the media to stop doing stories on these guys. They are just looking for reactions, I think it the WBC believes lends legitimacy to their cause.

Winston Legthigh
How do they get so much press in the first place? Don't they have only 40 members, which are mostly family members? Where does their income come from?
Shakespeare In The Alley
lawsuits against people who snap and get violent at their protests, basically i like the idea of these counter protests, but the best thing is just to fucking ignore WBC entirely. counter protests only make the story get more attention, which is all WBC wants in the first place. edit: actually i hadnt read these articles and assumed it was another physical counter protest. raising money is good Edited February 21, 2013 by Shakespeare In The Alley
uncool2pillow
but the best thing is just to fucking ignore WBC entirely. This, fundraising aside. These assholes thrive on the message that there is no such thing as bad publicity. I do admire that kid, about 10 years old, whose mom took a picture of him near a protest holding a sign saying "God hates no one".
MrRain422
When I was in college, this group of inbred dickheads came to Ann Arbor to protest the general gayness of Ann Arbor. As I was walking to class, I was approached by a young boy, probably around 7 or 8 years old, who reached his arm out to me to hand me a flyer. I politely said "no thank you" and continued on my way. As I passed, he yelled at me, "You're a dirty sinner and you're going to hell." On a reflex, I said "Fuck you." I felt kind of bad about it for the rest of the day, as I don't normally talk to children like that. Later I forgave myself though, as I realized that he was one of Fred Phelps's grandchildren and would no doubt still be a gigantic asshole as an adult.
gogo
Latest from the college: http://deanofthecollege.vassar.edu/news/2012-2013/130228-campus.html The schedule of events includes "2:35 Symbolic ringing of Main Building bell and joyful scream". Classic Vassar response to anything. And from the alumnae association: http://alums.vassar.edu/news/2012-2013/130227-laybourne.html Even though we are not recommending that you come to Vassar in person (for obvious logistical reasons) we want you to see what goes on. We will provide a livestream video feed on the alumnae/i Hub from 1 – 3 p.m. tomorrow where you can watch and follow the campus rally. We will also be updating the alumnae/i Facebook page and other social media. The campus organizing group has been saying, “This is about us; it’s not about them.” Therefore, we will not acknowledge or engage the picketers, nor will we show visuals of that group or any outside off-campus group that may choose to demonstrate or counter-demonstrate. We fully expect that individuals – both on-campus and off – will be posting their own videos and pictures but the College will concentrate its efforts and resources on the campus gathering. And of course, there's also this: http://www.buttonhead.biz/Vassar-Pride-Button-Pin
