LouieB Posted June 3, 2017 Author Share Posted June 3, 2017 \The Classical and Beyond show this Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 1-4 PM CT on WNUR 89.3 FM, or wnur.org or Tunein will pay tribute to the work of French author Marcel Proust, author of the monumental novel "In Search of Lost Time" with music from Proust's contemporaries, friends, and inspirations. Those composers will include Camille Saint Saens, Maurice Ravel, Cesar Franck, Gabriel Faure, and Renaldo Hahn. Cohosts John Martin and Lou Berkman will be playing works by these composers and discussing their relationship to Proust. This is a new and improved show; since we did more show prep. The music we will be playing is highly accessible and melodic. Plus a taste of the musical "My Life With Albertine". Spoiler alert, Albertine is the narrators significant other. (wnur.org or TuneIn or 89.3 FM at 12 PM Central time) I'm going to play lots and lots of rock and other stuff like that (with a bit of weirdness thrown in for good measure. I had requests for more Allman Brothers, The Fugs, and the Brits (which will include the Stones, Kinks, and Joy Division). Then some cuts from the Monterrey Pop Fest from 50 years ago this past weekend including Otis Redding, the Byrds, Hendrix, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane and Hugh Massagela. How about guitar and drum rock from the Black Keys, White Stripes, White Mystery and Cash Money. And head to head songs from Bruce and Iggy and Nick and Tom. A tribute to folksinger Rosalie Sorrels. And if I have time songs about bridges from Future Islands, Brokeback, and Sonny Rollins. Oh yea and then Heino Keiji and some glass harmonica. What's not to like?? Join me. LouieB. Featured this week will be solo Jeff Tweedy from his brand new solo record. Also featured will be a segment on the late great electric bass player Jaco Pastorius, including his solo albums, work with Joni Mitchell, and with Weather Report. Starting off will be cuts from Low, Antietam, and Cash Money. Additionally DJ LouieB will be spinning some vocal R&B from The Dells, The Orioles, The Five Keys, The Five Royals, and Hank Ballard and The Midnighters. There's going to be the "Bridge" segment from last week with Future Islands, Brokeback, and Sonny Rollins. Ending the show will be country blues from Tommy Johnson, Willie Johnson, Texas Alexander, Elvie Thomas, and Bukka White. Let's see what I can get in. You'll only know if you tune in. Lots of obvious stuff including Woody, Bruce, Van, Neil, Los Lobos, etc, plus some new Roscoe Mitchell, a band called Sidewalk Chalk, some soul, some R&B, some poetry, some old political recordings (Taft and Bryan), lots of Sousa marches, Stephen Foster, and who knows what else. The Midday Mixtape Show is on once again Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 12-2 PM CT on www.wnur.org and Tunein and 89.3 FM, this week with extra rock, songwriters, and some jazz, plus a new couple numbers by the Chicago group Razorhouse. In addition to Razorhouse there will be new Jason Isbell, Rodney Crowell, the Banditos, and Heron Oblivion. Also older material from Kelly Hogan, Whiskeytown, Jules Shear, the Replacements, Fresh Young Fellows, The Band, Television, Ben Atkins, the Stooges, and Sonny and Cher, plus much older material from Josephine Baker and Roosevelt Sykes. Mix in a jazz break with Ira Sullivan and live Charles Mingus, plus a head to head with Robyn Hitchcock and Bob Dylan, as well as some Japanese pop and we've got a show. We will be featuring the music of the Kronos Quartet, which includes lots of great world music along with modern and not so modern classical music. Kronos is a very popular and eclectic group which teams up with all sorts of musicians and types of music (once worked with Glenn Kotche), so check this one out. The Mixtape Show is breaking new ground this Saturday May 12, 2018 at 7-9 AM CT on www.wnur.org and Tunein and 89.3 FM when DJ LouieB welcomes The Wizard DJ (usually anonymous on WZRD) Kevin Monahan for a crossover show. Kevin DJs Friday nights 9-12 PM on WZRD out of Northeastern Illinois University (88.3 and WZRDchicago.org). But tomorrow morning after spinning in the evening, he will be bringing some early morning favorites to spin on WNUR. His taste is similar to LouieB so it should be lots of crossover fun. Catch him tonight and both of us tomorrow. WZRD has been a favorite station of mine for decades. It's Northwestern vs Northeastern.And also tune in at 6 AM when LouieB does an early music show with jazz, country, blues, and pop from 1891 to 1938 for music your grandparents (or great-grandparents) may have spun or heard on the radio. I will play music by the forgotten or less forgotten recording artists of the mostly early 20th century. This week's show will not he for everyone, but if you skip it you will miss two hours of experimental, improvisational, and non-traditional music. Most of the time the show features a small amount of this type of music, but this week is two hours of mostly instrumental music including new music from Mind over Mirrors (from Chicago), modern classical composers Steve Reich, Karl-Heinz Stockhausen, Michael Pisaro, Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, & Z'ev, along with improvisational artists Keith Jarrett, Joshua Abrams, Marc Ribot, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Keiji Heino (with Jim O'Rourke & Peter Brotzmann), plus Captain Beefheart (by request), Helen Money and improvisational pioneers Byron and Gerald. Joining the show with DJ LouieB this Tuesday, January 21, 2020 from 12-2 CT on 89.3 FM, wnur.org, or TuneIn will be John Martin (cohost of Classical and Beyond) for an overview of the life and music of Laughner from his years in the bands Pere Ubu and Rocket from the Tombs, but mostly his solo recordings from clubs and informal sessions, some done at home. While Laughner may not be famous, he left a small but potent legacy that included intriguing original songs and covers by a Dylan, Reed, Richard Thompson and Tom Verlaine. Recently his lo-fi recordings were brought together by Smog Veil Records in a long overdue compilation, but we will also be playing recordings by Pere Ubu and Rocket from the Tombs. Join us as John remembers his high school friend and musical compadre, as we spin a portion of Laughner’s musical legacy.
