Sir Stewart
I didn't hear it first, but I knew and loved U2's take on "Christmas Baby Please Come Home" before finally falling in love with Darlene Love's superior version. Still love both, but hers is the best Christmas record of all.
Lammycat
Neil freaking Diamond is awesome. UB40 also covered his "Holly Holy." He's written a shit ton of tunes that are covered by others, including Sinatra, Elvis, Shane MacGowan, and Johnny freaking Cash Deep Purple (and Waylon Jennings) covered "Kentucky Woman." The man is a legend. LouieB
Saying someone is awesome because UB40 covered one of their songs is not exactly high praise.  Neil Diamond was a great songwriter.  Many of his songs have stood the test of time. LouieB
LouieB
REM's Superman before:https://youtu.be/IyfDH0HKLjs I have an unbelievably beat up 45 of this. LouieB

I just added another tune UB40 covered because someone else had mentioned it. The point was that he's a prolific songwriter that's been covered by some notoriously admired artists (not UB40). SteveMck
The Lyres - Love Me Til The Sun Shines (Kinks, they also covered Tired of Waiting on this Record - On Fyre - as well)The Lyres - I Confess (I believe the original is by New Colony Six)Â Ramones had a bunch of covers - California Sun, Let's Dance, Needles and Pins, Surfin' Bird - where I heard their version prior to the original. Winston Legthigh
I heard Steve Martin's version of "Under the Bamboo Tree" from The Man With Two Brains (great great all time classic comedy), way before seeing Judy Garland sing it in Meet Me In St. Louis (a nice movie for nice people), which I just saw for the first time this weekend. I think the original tune is way older than that though.

I don't think I even read the fine print on the album when it came out (I was about 12) and didn't know they were cover tunes until a bunch of years later.

PopTodd
"Rollercoaster" - i first heard via Red Temple Spirits rather than the 13th floor elevatorsPretty much every Roky Erickson song I heard as a cover first, or at least every song that has a cover version appear on this fantastic tribute record, which I bought before ever hearing anything from Roky or the Elevators:Â Â (And, looking back, I see that I mentioned this record earlier in the thread, but I felt it bore repeating in response to the post that I quoted.)Â

PopTodd
"Hazy Shade of Winter"I heard The Bangles' version before I heard the original S&G. And I still think that the cover is the superior take. This song was meant to rock -- what with that riff and all.
John Smith
Heard Hey Ya on the radio today and realised that I heard the Supersuckers version before i heard the real one, which I just heard today for the first time.
PopTodd
Heard the Paul Weller version of "Black Sheep Boy" long before I heard the Tim Hardin original. And, I still think that it's one of the finest songs ever written.
