it's pretty much D A G (std. tuning no capo) throughout the song

listen for the changes

 

the noise riff at the end has been tabbed out at the gumbopages (sounds about right)

Live they do it with the capo at the 2nd fret, still using D A G. the little lick in between verses starts on the 9th fret of the G string. It's easy to figure out from there.

i think it has also been played with the capo on 2, using a C, G, F progression....

 

you can play like this along to the album version and it sounds great in my opinion

 

also, very first chord of the song, when played with the capo on 2 has a g in the bass

so......

just hold your fingers in the position of a d chord and slowly deconstruct it.

when wilco played it mon in mpls, it was capo 2: C-G-F

i do it with capo 2, and C, G, F. during the G chord i like to hammer on to the 2nd fret on the D string.. like this

To make it sound even more cool, detune that open G note at the end - you can use a Whammy bar, bend the neck, or if you're especially talented, use the G-string tuning peg to tune it down, and then back up for the correct pitch.
