  1. It probably cuts both ways, and I think people on both sides of the issue (who actually care about it) get entrenched and defensive about their own positions, myself included. On an everyday level, I see people with kids getting a lot more "benefits" -- in terms of schedule flexibility and getting to duck out when projects get hot -- that I simply don't get, and that's where my bubbling resentment comes from. Plus, my department doesn't really have a promotion path, so the idea that I'm more likely to get quicker promotions isn't really true -- I've already received the one promotion that an
  2. Finally got this down from IndieTorrents and checking it out. I don't hear the Spoon comparison (nor do I think they're better) but they're pretty good.
  3. It's sad how far PC has gone in applying inappropriate names to things or people. If "Indian" is offensive to someone, "Native American" is likely to be just as offensive, if not more so.
  4. Indeed. I had some friends in a house on that street that went by the name "Cheese Tray House." They had a band called the High Street Blues Band, and they were fantastic. One of the best things in their repertoire was a blistering instrumental cover of SRV's "Couldn't Stand the Weather."
  5. Probably not as low as you might think. In my experience, warmer temperatures mean wetter snow that packs together better and piles up more. Colder temperatures can mean lighter snow that blows around a lot and doesn't necessarily cling to tree branches quite so well. I'm certainly no expert, but to this veteran of nearly forty winters, that scene looks like it could have happened at just a few degrees below freezing.
  6. Yes. And I wasn't sure what the big deal was about it there, either.
  7. MattZ made the points I was going to make, but here's some of what I was thinking anyway. Based on my admittedly limited empirical observation, people with children spend less time in the office, end up exhausting their sick/personal/vacation time much faster and therefore take more unpaid time off, and are less productive at work on the whole because issues with their kids come up surprisingly often. In the meantime, their childless coworkers (like me) are left with the short end of the stick, often staying late to finish things up because everyone else leaves and just assumes that we can d
  8. Can it help Is Chicago Not Chicago with his drug test?
  9. Clearly they only wanted people who did drugs.
  10. The Beta for the new Yahoo mail is kind of cool. I tend to run my browser in a smaller window at work, though, and it's not so good for that.
  11. Pretty much, yeah. My girlfriend and I will be up north in a cabin for a week, starting on Sunday. No phone, no internet -- y'all won't have to skip past my posts here for an entire week.
  12. This week will be a good indicator of whether Michigan is for real or if they shot their wad in South Bend last week.
  13. The Fletcher Pratt - Nine By Nine This is still high on my list of best albums of the 2000s.
  14. I am awake, and I am at work. After today, neither of those things has to happen again until October.
  15. Most obvious Pink Floyd cover for Wilco to play: "San Tropez." I'd love to hear them do that sometime.
  16. Ryan Adams, Bryan Adams To Record Album Tweedy, Farrar, Bennett Plan Historic Three-Band Co-Headlining Tour; Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco To Share Stage Squeeze Reunites to Record, Tour
  17. IE 7 was just Microsoft trying desperately to catch up to what Firefox has been doing for years. And they didn't even manage that. Plus, Firefox 2 is coming up soon (in beta now I believe), which will put IE 7 even further behind the times. People only use IE because it comes bundled with their OS.
  18. Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk. That page is cracking me up.
