  1. Have Mike and the Dog weighed in? I haven't had a chance to listen to them this week and I seem to remember you listening to WFAN in the past...
  2. Yes, times have changed at KF.
  3. Just as a follow-up on my thought above, the whole running theme of Harold Ford Jr in this story is an interesting one. Imus was a very vocal supporter of Ford in his recent (losing) senate race in Tennessee. And Imus was very vocal about the racist campaign that was run against him -- to the point where Imus claims he received death threats. Now this story breaks and Ford hasn't supported Imus. Has left him out to dry. I dont think its my place to judge one way or the other whether Ford is right or wrong to do so, but its an interesting subpolot to the whole story.
  4. I don't think so. Or, at least, I am not so sure. A huge part of his show was his interviews with politicians. No one running for office is going to want to touch him if he has the stink of racism attached. Losing sponsors is one thing. Losing his guests is going to be much harder to shake. I have been listening to that crotchety old fuck since I was in junior high school 20 years ago. Jeez.
  5. Does anyone know if CBS owns WFAN? i.e., Will Imus continue on WFAN?
  6. What a great fucking band we are all fans of. Jeezus Christ they never cease amazing me.
  7. Jack is not in every scene of the show. Is it not possible that he just takes a leak behind a tree on his way from point A to point B?
  8. As someone who listens to imus every morning this makes sense. He ripped on people there constantly. They must hate him and see this as their opportunity to get him canned. (In addition, to quite fairly being offended by what he said.)
  9. In the Disco Duck genre, don't forget Carole King's Eating Chicken Soup with Rice. I can't remember the name of the album. First album I bought with my own money: The Police, Synchronicity (on vinyl). First concert: Squeeze at Madison Square Garden in 1989 (Katrina and the Waves opened, I think)
  10. Fair point. But if the people who want him fired are a minority (no pun intended), then they should not succeed by definition. And it appears that they are succeeding. At least in MSNBC's case. The people who want him fired can become a majority by convincing listeners to stop listening instead of going straight to the top and bringing him down in what appears to be a coup d'etat.
  11. Why can't Sharpton and Jackson stand up and implore people not to listen to Imus? Instead of calling for him to be fired? Trust me -- market forces will bring down Imus on their own if people are as upset as they claim. Stop listening, then ratings go down, and sponsors will disappear. So will Imus. I recognize that the first amendment doesn't apply here, but Sharpton and Jackson are treading very close to censoring speech that they don't like. There are plenty of people out there that are willing to chalk this up to an unfunny joke and nothing more. Sharpton and Jackson are not the
  12. Right. Or maybe its not false nostalgia, but instead fans of a unique venue that are actually sorry to see it disappear. As are the artists who sponsored fund raisers in the past to try to help keep a FOR PROFIT venue open because it was friendly to the fans and friendly to the musicians. Tonic had a vibe to it that was different than most other venues in the city these days. You are right, no place -- no matter how cool the vibe is -- is going to survive in Manhatan on $8 tickets sold to 30-40 people per night. Especially when there are 20 other concert options competing against it. Bu
  13. Imus makes fun of everyone. And he is not very good at it. Or funny. But anyone that listens to his show regularly (I do) knows that the guy is not a racist, but instead is a crotchety old misanthrope. A misanthrope (I might add) who has dedicated his life to raising awareness for autism, SIDS, toxic home cleaning products, walter reed medical hospital, etc. And he runs a ranch for kids with cancer. The guy is an idiot and he should have been suspended. And he should apologize for what he did (he has). But what is happening to him now is flat-out ridiculous. He makes a living as a D
  14. That's not why I think its a doomed idea. I just think that running your own (very small) music label when you are musician is one thing. Hiring several people with a passion to run a not-for-profit, owning a building, and fund-raising are very different propositions. And with bldgs in NYC selling for millions, I am just skeptical. I am not shitting on the DMG idea. I love the idea. I am just doubful that it's anything more than an idea. John Zorn opened his own club pretty recently, right? The Stone? I haven't been there yet. So maybe it is possible. But a club as one man's vision
  15. yes, keep trying. My first attempt for Hammerstein Ballroom said there were no more tickets available and then I tried again and got 2.

    Hammerstein Ballroom, here I come!!
  17. I understand. I spoke a bit carelessly. I didnt mean the club should buy the building. I meant that getting a group of people together to buy a building in NYC is a headache of ridiculous proportions. If its a decent building, you'd probably need millions. Assuming you could get that much money (which I doubt you could), how would you structure how the building is managed on a day-to-day basis (leaks, shoveling snow, etc.)? How is the club in the building managed? How is fund-raising done? Which lawyers get hired to structure the real estate deal? Who forms the not-for-profit? Who de
  18. I can endorse this. As an aside -- I would argue the Jeff Weaver Effect is more damaging to the psyche of the fans of the team he plays out of his jock to beat. Even moreso than the fans of the team he ultimately signs with after the fact. The fans of the new team (i.e., Mariners) know he sucks and don't get their hopes up (although an argument could be made that they have ample reason to think their front office has no clue how to run a team, which can't be a good thing). The fans of the team he beat (i.e., Mets) had to watch in stunned disbelief as their season got flushed down the toil
  19. is there a term for the phenomenon of players playing completely over their head in a contract year (or in the postseason of a contract year), resulting in idiotic teams being duped into paying huge riches in the offseason? and then the player sucking ass on the new team? it happens so often that there has to be a term for it. maybe we should just call it the Jeff Weaver theory. seems as good as any. and I bet most people would know what you were talking about if you just referred to it by name.
  20. Yeah, I can blame him for Times Square, but the Lower East Side? That's less clear to me. I suppose he got the ball rolling. No they haven't. Don't get me wrong -- I love DMG and I applaud them for throwing their hat in the ring, but they haven't. Their solution is to put "the building...in the hands of the collective". Do you know how much money it would take to buy the building that tonic was housed in (which was, let's face it a piece of crap)? I certainly don't. Once they've raised the money (which I bet they can't), how does a collective manage the day to day? Fix the leaks
  21. Thanks for that. DMG is great. For what its worth, I am/was a huge fan of tonic, and now that it is closing for good (as are the bars in the area) and now that my neighborhood in general is turning into a mass of high rise cookie cutter apartment buildings, I can't help but be bummed. And then I try to put myself in the shoes of Tonic's landlord. Or any other person/company that owns a plot of land in NYC. Tonic went months without paying rent. How is that acceptable? Why should someone with a plot of land keep a 5 story walkup with 10 apartments when they can build a high-rise with t
  22. yes, today was a good day to be a mets fan.
  23. if we all get our own personal hell, I bet this album is on repeat in mine.
