  1. I am such a sucker. I love the whole "special limited edition" ripoff. I tried to be a good fan, bought the special edition from the website, and the "special" CD I got in the mail today comes with a cheesey poster thats already in the trash, and two lame flipbooks. Yeah, flipbooks. The things that you flip the pages on and it shows moving pictures. Haha. Its a good thing I love this album, but next time, I buy the regular CD (and/or vinyl).
  2. It was said above more eloquently, but I agree with the opinion above that this album is the perfect snapshot of the band going in a new direction and yet staying the same. I hear bits from every Wilco period on this album. I love it. Can't get enough.
  3. Yeah, I am with you solace. If I were to play the silly game of assigning numerical values to music, then I'd probably be in the 8.8 range. That sounds right. I totally disagreed with the reviewer's point about the "mirror mirror on the wall" line. I think its great. Its in Black Mirror, and it conjures up the perfect Snow White image. Then you've got the king taking back the throne in Intervention, and the "if my mockingbird don't sing/buy me a diamond ring" reference later in the album. I love it. Totally consistent with an interesting theme of the album.
  4. So pitchfork gave this an 8.4. That seems about right to me. I dont agree with most of the reviewer's critiques, but I suppose it's as close to a review that I can get behind as any other on pitchfork. On constant repeat right now in the MattZ world: SBS and Neon Bible.

I love how they bring it all back down in Shake it Off at 3 mins or so. Cool as a cucumber.
  6. Arcade fire - Neon Bible. I am finally taking a break from SBS which had been on repeat since Saturday night at 11pm EST. After SBS on repeat, this is a bizarre listen right now.

Ha! I can't keep up with all these threads. It's a totally different place now that we actually have a wilco album to discuss. Glad to see that I wasn't the only one... Great minds.

Does anyone else start singing The Boxer ("I am just a poor boy...") when You Are My Face kicks in? Its happened to me a couple of times -- for a split second -- and then I snap back into reality.

My initial impression is that this is a special, special album. And I sort of understand how/why this album took so long to make. I mean, these are all fairly simple songs from what I can tell (at least the melodies are), but they are presented in such a perfect and complex way. This album was put together with a lot of love and care. Was anyone else blown away by John's bass playing? His bass runs/fills in some of these songs are flat out sparkling. As for the Maker's point about the cheesiness of What Light, well, I suppose it doesn't bother me. Its the Late Greats of SBS and I am o
  10. I am so happy to be listening to this right now and to be sharing this with all of you. I am drinking the best single malt whiskey I've got and having a blast.
  11. this may very well be the greatest thing in the history of everything

  14. I found a trial version of Nero that seems to work and will keep me good until it expires in a month. I will check out the links above, but for now, my problem is solved. Thanks for the help.
  15. Um, I suppose I don't have an answer to that. I suppose I can download Nero and burn with that program. Is that what people generally use? I have never used Nero -- I only downloaded a plugin that was supposed to be compatible with WMP, but it turns out its only compatible with WMP 9 and I am running WMP 11. Thanks for the suggestion.
  16. I recently upgraded to Windows Media Player 11 and I now realize that I am unable to burn audio cds without a two second gap between songs. I surfed around online and most users seem to gripe about the same problem. It is not fixable without downloading a variety of other programs and plugins. I have some concerts that I want to burn and I obviously want to do that without the apparently mandatory gap between tracks. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do? I already downloaded a Nero plugin, but it looks like that plugin was created for, and only works with, WMP 9. So, in
  17. for what its worth, i really enjoy getting different strings and putting them on my guitar to see the differences. like someone else mentioned above, its only $5 and its like you get a new guitar every time. I would recommend you just mess around and until you find some you really love, every time you replace strings you might want to try something new. I stumbled across LaBella silk and steel strings recently and i really enjoyed these. I dont think many people know about them. on deck, when those wear out, are some d'addario phospher bronze and martin strings.
  18. Not sure yet. Still getting through my first listen...
  19. The reviews I see seem to be very positive on the whole, but I stumbled across his website yesterday and a couple of songs were streaming. I don't know; it didn't do anything for me. I had a similar reaction to caliber's -- it seems that he is trying to hard. I will reserve judgment until I hear the whole album -- maybe tonight -- but at first blush I wasn't all that impressed. FWIW, I really liked Okemah.
