  1. I wouldn't say I think about it all that much either ( ), just that it falls into the category of commercial where a retailer cherry picked words from a song to sell a product, even though the song not only has nothing to do with it, but could be interpreted as criticising the very product being sold. The irony itself is only something Ray Davies could write a song about.
  2. Notwithstanding the fact that I love the tune, I thought it was a bad use of a song. If not bad, certainly awkward. The song is about how people take pictures of each other to prove they love each other. Putting pics in a book so that they look back and pretend that they were happy. Classic Ray Davies sarcasm. At best, that's a bizarre theme to have in a commercial for someone trying to sell cameras, no?
  3. I just started trying to fingerpick that tune. Love it. Not an easy song to play for a scrub like me.
  4. Wow, I had never seen that. What a great commercial. To jump on something mentioned a few posts back -- I dont think its entirely fair to say that as musicians get older (or wiser) they get further away from the passions of their youth and it is easier to sell their music to the Man. That may be partly true, sure, but its also true that musicians from the 50s/60s were regularly hosed by record companies and managers to a tremendous extent and signed the rights away to songs that would have had them be millionaires by now. So in lots of cases, artists (older ones at least) are often tryin
  5. This guy has 48 states to go. I don't know why he is getting sidetracked with this Christmas stuff.
  6. cool review! thanks. They disappointed me when they played in brooklyn this past summer, but I love them so much that I am going to give them another shot when they come back. Those songs are just too good to pass up. The new album is hit or miss for me, but when it hits, it is so great.
  7. Arcade Fire, 2:14 I have seen many things at the hundreds of concerts I have been to. A band flying to the stage at Madison Square Garden in a giant hot-dog had been the most surreal. Until last night. Last night, I drank a Heineken and watched Arcade Fire turn their amps to 11 in the chapel of the Judson Memorial Church on Washington Square Park South in NYC. An upside-down neon bible and a giant stained glass window with an imposing cross adorned the backdrop of the stage. A giant church pipe organ made its home stage right. The second level of pews became the seated VIP section for
  8. Ouch. As a side note -- I think this is the guy that slammed Colin Meloy in the Voice a couple of months ago.
  9. This article in the Village Voice was pretty amusing... not the least of which was the look back at some hilarious rankings (e.g., 1989 - Neneh Cherry's Raw Like Sushi #5). http://www.villagevoice.com/pazzandjop06/0...t,75736,22.html Critics' polls have evolved and arguably withered lately, but at least we didn't vote for Timbuk 3 by Chris Ott Beyond its status as a discerning metric of the Bands That Matter in a given year, Pazz & Jop became one of the hottest potatoes in the field of music journalism in 2006, following the Voice's dismissal of its patriarch, Robert Christgau. 10. I am with cryptique. It isn't your opinion that's idiotic or moronic. Its the reason you give -- "but i can take my guitar and strum the shit out of it, that doesn't make its [sic] good music." That's not idiotic or moronic. It's both. Sorry.
  11. Was this released or did it leak? Just looked and couldn't find it on rhapsody... NP: Some Loud Thunder. I hated this on first listen. Didn't think it had the joy or the power of the first album, but it's growing on me a bit.
  12. Checking out that bold as love video that bobbob posted reminded me of how awesome hendrix is/was. Not that i need reminders. Sorry bobbob. I couldn't get past the first 30 seconds of that clip.
  13. I am going to guess that those NYC shows end up at Hammerstein Ballroom. The Decemberists made the jump there last tour. Damn. Three shows, though, so I am holding out hope for Webster Hall. (good thing I have a ticket to tomorrow's show at Judson Memorial Church!!)
  14. In fairness, I caught them for 30 seconds at the end of the night and they apparently won a bunch of awards. So its very possible that they had already thanked the songwriters many times by that point in the night.
  15. My favorite part was when the Dixie Chicks got up to accept an award and casually thanked the songwriters in a throw-away line.
  16. How does one do a search for a picture?
  17. I missed that pic. I venture to say that I prefer the undoctored original though. Love Bites slays everything on there.
  18. I have a sinking feeling that these last 4 are really obscure British references that I will never get. Bloody annoying, if you ask me. EDIT: one of these should be how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall. That would be cool. Since they know now and all.
  19. 17 should be "on" not "in" that messed with me. Good thing I am a genius. 29 so far.
  20. I am a genius. I knew it all along.
  21. Wilco fans would not have California Stars or Mountain Bed (etc) without Billy Bragg (or woody, of coure). If I remember right, Nora picked Billy. Billy brought Wilco along for the ride. Yes, I agree that Billy comes across pretty annoyingly at points in the documentary, but I think he's great. Do the Bragg haters actually know any of his music outside of Mermaid Ave? Or are they basing it on what they see of him in the movie? Is it possible not to like Talking with the Taxman About Poetry? Its pretty clear that Billy and Wilco were on different pages when it came to the interpretatio
  22. I suppose people can disagree on that question on moral grounds. So instead, I am going to avoid the moral issue and just say that it makes complete sense from a cold hearted economic standpoint to have universal health care. Paying to prevent illness, disease, etc. in the long run SAVES MONEY. Otherwise you have people showing up to hospital emergency rooms with conditions that are way worse because they have been untreated. This whole debate makes no sense to me. On moral or economic grounds.
