  1. In his defense, if we are naming threads "The End is Near!" imagine how he feels.
  2. If you assume for a minute that a portion of this country hates Obama or thinks he's a terrorist sympathizer or Muslim, or whatever... I think his point is that we need to come together. Obama will be forced (perhaps) to respond in ways that some people won't like. But that we need to stand together as a country. That's how I took it. Also, not sure if anyone else saw this. From the NYPost: BENSALEM, PA.
  3. I have no idea what he's talking about, but I dont think it's a stretch to say that a president will be challenged early and often. I took the quote to mean that we can't possibly know the what or the when, but that we know there will be something. It struck me more as the standard plain vanilla call for bi-partisanship cliche. This country is so polarized that anything that Obama does as president could play as not being "right" to half the country. And he wants people to come together to support the president. Maybe I am misreading it. Has certainly happened before.
  4. I dont see what the big deal is about Biden's quote.
  5. Not sure I agree with your point. Without government involvement, abortions would be medical procedures/decisions made by patients and their doctors when and if appropriate. Government got involved to affirmatively outlaw abortions, which resulted in government getting involved to undo what it had done.
  6. Sorry to hear it, dcarter. I had it in the back of my mind to keep an eye out for your review since you seemed so excited to be going to a show. Sorry you got stuck with a dud. I hope he makes it up to Atlanta.
  7. Ok, I was able to get past the first song, and I moved on to the rest of the album. I dont think the rest of the album is as good as that first song. Not that the rest of the album is bad, just that I think that first song may be just about perfect. Anyone else hearing My Back Pages in Furr? Still Playing: BT/Furr
  8. I always thought I was the only voice of reason in these threads.
  9. Someone should direct Ron Paul to the Ideology vs. Reality thread. I am sure it's easy for Ron Paul to use ideology to call for banks to fail. He won't have to deal with the reality of the fallout.
  10. I will take the blame for trying to start a discussion here without presenting the entire picture. Anyone interested should check out the Silver Jews message board. DCB has 2 posts in the thread (and the 2nd is as priceless as the first). That being said, I think "DCB" would agree with you Moe. I think his point is that music IS subjective and that there's really nothing wrong with true and honest critique. All art thrives with true and honest crtiique. Stifling discussion (or critique) ultimately harms the art. And a Radiohead fan who flies off the handle at the perceived slight of "hi
  11. Moe, I presented these quotes out of context, but the blurb from the message board was in response to a fan's diatribe about how wrong Berman was/is, which sort of explains why he goes off. I think he'd agree with you that it's all just music, and I think his ire was more directed at this person's response being just more evidence that Radiohead has inspired a cult of victimhood and introspection that manifests itself as fans running to Radiohead's defense whenever someone critiques them. I happen to like (not love) Radiohead and I think Berman goes a tad overboard, but what he says makes a
  12. In an interview with Pitchfork, David Berman said:
  13. There's no way in hell the rest of this album can be this good.
  14. I am try to listen to Blitzen Trapper's Furr given all the love it gets here, but I can't get past the first song without hitting repeat. When does this urge pass so that I can get to song 2, 3, 4, etc?
  15. Oh, I don't disagree with how imporant line play is. But when I say special teams, I mean everything about special teams, and not even the points. I mean field position on both ends -- consistently pinning your opponents deep and/or picking up net yards because of solid returns. Field position changes how the entire game is played. (And penalties on special teams can kill you -- those blocks in the back are so difficult to recover from).
  16. The more I watch football the more I realize that games are won and lost on special teams more often than on offense or defense.
  17. I understand that this is politics. At the same time, McCain initially suggested that Obama would rather win an election and lose a war. By doing so, he insinuated that Obama would put himself and his own goals ahead of what was best for this country. If we admit that McCain is doing what he is doing because "all's fair in politics," is it really any different? Going negative may help him in the polls, but doesnt the country end up losing a different sort of "war"? McCain seems fine with that. Are we better off as a country by polarizing the folks in the "pro-America" sections of the co
  18. Are you really equating the two? I don't even know where to start.
  19. Understood. Curious -- do you think Exile on Main Street or the White Album could have been great single LPs? I know it's apples and oranges and Cold Roses doesn't hold a candle to either.
  20. I guess I can't argue with that. There is certainly something special about a really solid album from start to finish and Ryan doesnt appear to have that as a goal. Although some people really dig on 29, and some people hate it. Some people think Cold Roses is perfect and some think it has filler. If I happen to think Cold Roses is perfect the way it is, the last thing I'd want is for Ryan to have self-editted the release down to one super solid disc.
  21. I never understand this sentiment. Why would anyone want to wait longer to have less music? Sure, Ryan puts out some duds, but so what? We can all skip over the tunes we don't like, or as you did, create a compliation of his last 3 albums. Isn't it better to have more to choose from? What if my dud is your fave? (Not trying to pick on you, sunken treasure. I've noticed that a lot of people voice similar opinions. I understand "critics" doing it -- they have to be "objective." I'd think the fans would want to sample as much output as possible and filter out what they don't like themse
  22. A few pages back, Rove criticized Obama for floating too much toward the center (or right) on issues -- his broad tax cuts, criticizing McCain's healthcare proposal as a tax hike, etc. Which is it?
  23. So I stand by what I said. TheMaker never argued that there's been no collateral benefit. Good things have come from religion or faith. But he disputes whether it's worth it. Or whether it justifies, etc. Now that we've cleared that up...
