  1. Oh man, I think I am going to be ill.
  2. How many loaves of bread will it cost to buy a gallon of milk?
  3. Here's to the women we love. Here's to the women who love us. May they never meet. That one usually goes over well with the crowd.
  4. I've said it before, and I will say it again. The bass should be renamed the Paul McCartney. (Don't forget Graham Maby, people!)
  5. Dow breaks through 10,000 (the wrong way). Edit: good thing they banned short selling.
  6. As a Mets fan who doesnt watch much AL ball, I was particularly interested in seeing K-Rod last night since the Mets are rumored to be going after him. I was really surprised at how many curveballs he threw, and how he nibbled in that inning. An incredibly small sample size, I know, but it struck me that he was pitching scared. Just me? This guy is going to demand 12-15mil/yr as a free agent? Pleeeaaase. Am I just a Mets fan with Mariano Rivera-envy? All these closers seem to be overrated, make-you-sweat hacks.
  7. This is probably My Three Sons from Momofuku. Sounds like a great time. Elvis is King!
  8. I have decided that I am in favor of the wildcard team getting only 1 home game in the first round. The season has 162 games for a reason. The playoffs should be tilted more heavily in favor of the teams that proved their stuff over the full season. Also, the rule that the team with the best record cant play a wildcard team from its division is just stupid. The best team should play the team in the playoffs with the worst record (either the wildcard team or a division winner). If we've learned anything, it's that a short series in baseball doesn't tell you much about which team is the be
  9. Fear mongering? Jeez, come on. Folks can't have it both ways. If everyone in this thread is so entrenched in their beliefs that an "open discussion" about the issues can't be had, then there is no fear "mongering" going on. It's a bunch of Dems commiserating. Big difference.
  10. Based on what? The court's track record of respect for legal precedent?
  11. Not too sure about that, though. I think most conservatives are outraged by Bush tearing down the constitution, overspending, and nation building. His approval ratings are so low precisely because he has upset folks on both sides of the aisle. The fascinating thing about all of this (to me) is how astutely the party has essentially washed it's hands of the Bush Administration. It's almost as if Bush has been orphaned, and the Republican party gets a free pass because Bush betrayed so many of the core conservative principles. If you take a step back and think about it, it is mind boggli
  12. Main Street is in for a rude awakening if it thinks Wall Street doesn't bring down Main Street with it.
  13. I figured I'd make an appearance in this thread to congratulate the Brewers. My pain is tempered by the knowledge that Brewers fans have had to wait far too long for the playoffs. And big ups to the Marlins -- I have nothing but respect for a team that brings their A+ game when the only thing on the line is pride. After all, did the Mets have anything else on the line? Not really. All anyone plays for is pride. That Marlins team is poised to be very good for very long. As for this Mets fan? Well, he is trying to forget that, yet again, his team has torn his heart out and stomped on
  14. I don't have this. But I will. Oh yes. I will. Thank you Owl and Bear.
  15. Are we sure that's not Tina Fey?? Can anyone confirm this? This can't possibly be happening.
  16. That may not be the coolest thing I have ever seen, but it is definitely top 5.
  17. I agree that this McCain move to suspend the campaign is a pure, hollow stunt. But this Late Show stuff is all Letterman ego. McCain (rightly) didn't want to be painted as the guy yukking it up on the Late Show as the economy is imploding. As for why he lied to Dave? Maybe he didn't want to tell Dave that he didn't want to painted as the guy yukking it up on the Late Show with Dave? It's still all stunt to me, but completely blown out of proportion. And to suggest that the "lie" is indicative of anything broader seems like a stretch.
  18. Oh man. I hadn't even thought of that. I have to admit that that makes a heck of a lot more sense than a coup by Bush. I still think it's unlikely, but now that money market funds have "broken the buck" you almost have to wonder what happens if you go to the ATM to withdraw cash and get an IOU instead. Not to get all doomsday or hyperbolic, but lots of things are happening in these markets that were once unthinkable.
  19. YA GOTTA BELIEVE!!! (man thats getting hard)
  20. Hey Beltmann -- may the best team win the wildcard. I take comfort knowing that if (when?) the Mets blow it again this year, that (hopefully) will mean Milwaukee gets some playoff baseball for the first time in a lonnnng time. Here's to a crazy 5 days of baseball.
  21. It's in his genes. The thing that really bugs me (full disclosure: Mets Fan) is that everyone hated Steinbrenner in the mid80s and early 90s. Yankee fans too. For what he did to his managers and GMs, for what he did to Winfield, for signing free agent busts and trading away younger talent. For sticking his nose in everything. Everyone insisted that he ruined baseball in NY. Now that he's old and senile, he has somehow morphed into this sympathetic father figure that "saved" baseball in NY. People want him in the Hall of Fame. And he gets carted out on a golf cart at the All Star Game
