    A Cherry Ghost
  1. I'm not sure what you're getting at. I did not, and am not saying that this isn't a big deal, or that no one should care. It is a big deal, and he's going to do federal time for it, lose tens of millions of dollars in lost income, and very likely lose his career. Not exactly a slap on the wrist. What I am saying is that it's undeniable that the popularity of dogs in modern America is contributing to the level of widespread public hatred toward this man. I'm saying that it's interesting that this story crossed over from being an ESPN, sports section of your local newspaper of choice type
  2. If he and his cronies were fighting, say, rats, or snakes and mongooses (mongeese?) rather than dogs, which have become a quasi-child/family member for many middle class, urban/suburban professional types, would anyone give a shit? I agree that all this is pretty despicable, but there are and have been far worse people in the league who didn't merit this amount of scorn. See Leonard Little, and any of the dozens upon dozens of wife/girlfriend beaters over the years. Granted, his being an elite player accounts for part of the high level of publicity, but still...it doesn't add up to me.
  3. He was an idiot with no common sense and no sense of direction. Let's be honest. How about all the fathers who managed do visit parks and not put their families in the position where they needed to pull some ill-fated hero act to bail them out? I'd put them ahead of that Kim guy in the father of the year contest.
  4. Some observations: 1) In the closing scene at the airport, Jack references a "golden pass" that they were given. Presumably a lifetime of free flying from Oceanic. I can't recall the other dialogue exactly, but he seemed to reference not wanting to lie anymore, or something. Perhaps whatever organization is coming to the island in the present time story line gives fake cover stories to explain the survival of those that leave the island, and compels them to maintain confidentiality as to their experiences there. In Kate's case, maybe she's furnished with a new identity? 2) No way Desmo
  5. Jacob = Alvar Hanso Locke will of course live. Aside from the fact that he's a ["the"?] central character, the producers have indicated that the end of the season features a showdown b/w Locke and Jack. And I'm no M.D., but looking at the wound location it seems that the bullet would tear up his kidney on that side of the body, but for the fact that he doesn't have one there anymore.
  6. Hmmm..to each his own, I guess. I thought they sounded great. I, for one, have never gone for the "I wish he'd talk more" complaint. Granted, he doesn't, but my understanding is that this has long been the case. To me it's like going to see a lecturer/speaker and complaining afterwards that the lecturer should've played more songs. If I go to a Son Volt show, I want to hear Son Volt songs, not hear witty banter. But that's me. This seems to be an eternal debate on the Farrar board.
  7. I'd watch what you say. He's killed men for less. In all seriousness, I've heard this rap before and must profess my puzzlement. If I buy a CD or a ticket to a show, I'm satisfied by good music. I'm not looking to establish some sort of personal relationship with the performer and don't feel that I have to get a picture/autograph/guitar pick, etc in order to have my fandom validated. As for his disparagement of Tweedus Christ, allow me to refer to Kot's book as Exhibit A. If memory serves, Tweedy and his posse did plenty of their own dishing. Which I believe is what triggered Farrar
  8. Per jayfarrar.net, more dates to come. The ones listed are just the first round, if you will. This is how they posted dates for the last tour. I wouldn't worry. They always hit the South and Detroit, if my recollection is correct.
  9. This is much ado about nothing. It's a non-starter of an issue, has zero chance of happening and was simply floated to foment some discussion about the role of the military as it relates to the citizenry, and vice versa. For those who think this is a mistake by the Dems, relax. Rangel is a veteran and has the credibility to get away with suggesting this. If it forces a response from the administration, then at least they're being compelled to respond after 6 years in office. I, for one, don't want my party [Dems] to become a one-party-one-voice, toe the line caucus. Falling in line
  10. It was weird, but it made for a very cool, chill environment. I knew it would be small - there was no press/advertisement and it's an unfamiliar 'brand'. I'm just glad they toured behind the record at all, as it was recorded during 2 days of an aborted Son Volt recording session. Lemonade out of lemons, that sort of thing.
  11. It was great. Small crowd, maybe 80-120. I wasn't surprised based on the newness of the record, the unfamiliar moniker, and that lack of press/publicity for the show. And the fact that it was a Sunday night. But I digress... AP's set was killer. I'm not familiar with his work, but he mentioned about halfway through that all the songs were off the new record. I must get it, posthaste. Mark Spencer accompanied and was outstanding. JF's set was killer. 2 Son Volt songs [bandages and Scars, Afterglow 61, oh, and Gramaphone too, I think (damn booze)], several songs that will be on the ea
  12. Jay Farrar and Anders Parker as Gob Iron, Sunday 11/5 at Park West.
