isn't that the old saying?? We were called by both Governor Blagojevich's office and Senator Durbin's office and have been invited to give a statement and participate in a press conference tomorrow with the Senator and Rep. Emmanuel regarding the SCHIP program and promote health care for our nation's children! We are going to craft our statement tonight. We got in this position because I wrote a letter to the governor a couple months back, thanking him for his support of the All Kids Health Care program and told him Emily's story. Graham said, "wow, it's nice to know someone is reading

Sam- they are Keens......they are so comfy and I walk all over the city in them. It's like a dressy shoe with a sneaker sole. http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/20557878/c/3.html They do come in a number of colors. I also got these sneakers - so great because they are wide. I can't do Keds and Chucks because they are so narrow - http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/23124119/c/86607.html

I am not sure where I said, "pay women to have children." I am talking protections for women in the workplace, affordable options for child care, open and affordable access to birth control and sex education, etc......I am talking cultural and social shifts that place importance on the health and well being of women and children. That is not treating a symptom, that IS treating the illness. So, my next question - are you against the death penalty? and on that note, I am going to bed - have a nice week everyone.

my point about forced sterilization was not an either/or regarding women of color or white women - it was that it has affected PRIMARILY women of color, historically. I don't think that the issue of forced sterilization is discussed enough (if at all) when discussing the issues of reproductive rights. And you didn't even seriously answer my question. As for my point about abortion - the way to reduce abortions is not to outlaw it BUT to create an environment and a culture that supports women and children. It seems people like you are out to cure the symptoms but not the illness. If you val

I would be curious to hear ikol's position on the issue of forced sterilization of poor women, particularly poor women of color. This has been policy within my lifetime, and I still hear stories from time to time that fall into this arena. It still happens.

wow, you really missed my point.

I was just being silly because it seems that historically when the whole states rights argument comes up - it is to keep in place traditionally oppressive systems. slavery, voting rights, segregation, women's rights, etc...... -- IMO - legislating against abortion isn't going to eliminate abortion, it will just make it so more women die in trying to get them. It will create a black market, and unsanitary, dangerous conditions for women to terminate their pregnancies. If the pro life position really wanted to make a difference, they would funnel more money into education, assistance for

Required Reading: "Are Mothers Persons? Reproductive Rights and the Politics of Subject-ivity" by Susan Bordo This is in her book Unbearable Weight and I am having trouble finding it by itself online......but it's a really enlightening read about women, the legal system, rights and Western culture.

well out here in the Chicago burbs "they" are trying to get PP shut down - 100%

I don't have percentages of services offered and utilized at Planned Parenthood - but abortion is actually a minor part of their practice. I know I highly value PP as a place I can get health care without receiving a bill that will keep us from paying the rent. They do offer their services on a sliding scale and for free if need be, making it one of the lone places low income women can go for decent care.

I was at work and around 3:30 my boss says, "hey, there is a huge storm coming. Check the doppler and if you want you can head out early. I don't want you getting caught out in it." So, I checked and went into her office to talk to her about leaving and then one of the other women I work with says, "holy crap! you should see this!" and we went into the main room and looked out the window to see all the trees blowing sideways. We then got out a storm radio and they were going on about tornado warnings and we hustled down into the basement. We waited it out and then went back upstairs. Poor E
