  1. I loved The Kite Runner - sure, it's not complex, hoity toity fiction - but I think he is a great storyteller. I think I liked this one even more - particularly because the story revolves around two women in Afghanistan and moves through the Soviet occupation, subsequent civil war and the Taliban. I have a lot of interest in women's lives in Afghanistan (I worked on a campaign in the mid 90's to bring to light the plight of women under the Taliban) and, while this is indeed fiction, he said he based his characters on women he met in Kabul when he returned a few years ago. And no, he does
  2. indulged in a little fun reading on top of the other stuff - just finished this up loved it.
  3. starting into the material for my second exam.....this book is freakin amazing.
  4. I read it over 10 years ago. So, don't take my word for it. I just remember being pretty bored through it. I know it is held in high regard and, like I said, my teacher loved it.
  5. I had to read that for an English class in college ages ago......was pretty lukewarm on it.
  6. As much as I despise Cubs fans - it would be way worse to be a Tampa Bay fan. At least the Cubs have a thriving "cult" thing going on. Even though the baseball sucks, I am sure many Cubs fans would argue that the game is only half of the draw - if even that. Tampa Bay has a sleepy indoor stadium, practically no fans, shitty team, etc.....Cubs at least made the playoffs within the last few years..... I can't believe I am even vaguely sticking up for Cubs fans. p.s....can we please stop talking about the fucking Yankees?? You people.
  7. I know. It was awesome.
  8. it's time for the White Sox to start punching people in the face, because that's what you do when you suck at baseball.
  9. and The Cell has WAY better food! fact.
  10. sounds like you had a great time!!! I am joining in on the clamor for pictures!!! Welcome home!
  11. well I am certainly not in a higher bracket - I am not even in a middle class bracket. So......
  12. well - right now I have no health care - so I definitely get what I pay for. NOTHING. I pray everyday for no illness, debilitating injuries or accidents. We can't afford it! I would gladly pay higher taxes on gas, food, income, etc to guarantee that everyone has access to a doctor without potential for lifelong debt and difficulties. For me, and our limited income, we would have to make a lot of lifestyle choices and adjustments - but it would be worth it. We already are making those adjustments.
  13. just hop on the red line south - get off at 35th Street and everything will be oooookay.
  14. Your gas might be more expensive - I am assuming a lot of that high cost is due to taxes. I know one of the reasons Chicago's is so high is due to taxes. But - don't complain too much - you have free health care!
  15. pay no attention to the girl behind the curtain.
  16. I predicted these current high gas prices immediately following 9/11 when every car dealer in town made it their selling pitch that it's your American duty to buy an SUV......Let's Roll America!!! Though, Edie, your theory is credible. harumph.
  17. for a second I was thinking......you were in Detroit? and then I was like and then I was like me =
  18. re-order that please 1. Cubs 2. Yankees 3. Red Sox 4. Mets 5. Indians I don't know about the best fans - but I have met a lot of really nice Padres fans.
