  1. I couldn't care less that people equate BOS to NYY. Or that people are sick of hearing about them. Good. I spent the majority of my life rooting for a BOS team that fell short year after year after year. It's about time the worm has turned and I'm happy to be in the situation we're in. I like having "my" team be consistently competitive. The comparisons are valid and who cares?
  2. Not for nothing, but they did win a WS last year with pretty much the same team the've got right now. I don't think the deal is dead, a la with NYY (supposedly) but the Twins are certainly playing it smart to push and see how much they can get for Santana. It'd be great to have him but I don't think giving up both Lester and Ellsbury, in addition to the money required for a Santana contract, is wise.
  3. I'm a big fan of A Clockwork Orange and have read it several times, but am a bit unsure of what kind of input you're seeking. Alex, of course, finally attains free will by novel's end but did not have it until he was 'reformed."
  4. I don't think that justifies how the man runs his team, though. Here's a link to a piece I think does some thinking along these lines, with the key to it highlighted below: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7527010 The shame of it is that a baseball team, operated properly, could thrive in South Florida. The Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach area is the seventh-largest media market in the country, and an owner willing to reinvest in the team could easily make the Marlins a top destination for free-agent talent. Certainly, it will take a new ballpark and a winning team for that to happen, but
  5. I remember this link from a discussion a while back and it is a year old, but I think it's telling. Revenue sharing continues to steadily increase in amounts per team each year and here is a rough cut of what teams spend/re-invest in their team from their cut, percentage -wise: (I think that's supposed to read "% of Revenue....") % or Revenue spent on Payroll 79% Washington Nationals 79% Chicago White Sox 74% New York Yankees 70% Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 67% Toronto Blue Jays 66% Detroit Tigers 62% Minnesota Twins 60% Houston Astros 60% Boston Red Sox 59% Los Angeles Dodgers 59% St Lou
  6. Better. There was a picture of a bum blowing another bum in the street. Cute image, though.

  9. A Christmas Carol being omitted was an oversite. Home Alone should not be on that list. Apologies to the folks wanting to vote something other than is on the list. I should have an "other" category.
  10. Yeah, there are some omissions: A White Christmas (Bing Crosby), Scrooged, Nat. Lampoon's Family Christmas, Elf, etc. But I wanted to keep it at ten choices. To me, all of the choices merit consideration (with the possible exception of Home Alone), but the hands-down choice for favorite (which in my mind is the best) Christmas flick is It's A Wonderful Life. Now, I enjoy all the others on the list (with the possible exception of Home Alone), but It's A Wonderful Life is, in fact, one of my favorite movies ever. I never tire of watching it. It's a masterpiece. I will watch it several times
  11. Just having some fun. It's always interesting to see how the winter meetings pan out (and there'll surely be other key moves) and the Tigers clearly made a big move that should pay off nicely if their core group can stay typically healthy for the season.
  12. You forgot the word "Central" after "American League." Very threatening batting order for sure, though.
  13. I think the Marlins did o.k. with Maybin, Miller, and De La Cruz and Willis is certainly no sure thing switching to the American League (though he didn't have a lot of support from the pretty weak infield last year and that helped to kill his season, so there's that). And the Tigers are certainly a hell of a lot better with Cabrera alone. Of course they've depleted their farm talent, but....
  14. Yeah, Seeger. But that Mellencamp tune annoys the tar out of me too. And, I think that Meow Mix tune is kind of catchy. Maybe just because I get a kick out of watching the cat go back and forth with the camera trick, though. And this makes me think of the "I feel like Chicken Tonight (like chicken tonight)" tune. Which does blow.
  15. David Ortiz named Edgar Martinez Award winner (for DHs) for fifth straight year: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...rtnered=rss_bos
  16. BOS/Santana: "Will Carroll, who is so often dead-on in his medical info on Baseball Prospectus, is saying the Sox/Twins deal is all but done. My sources aren't willing to go that far yet. And BTW, Scott Boras' people confirmed that they have indeed signed Jacoby Ellsbury as a client." http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds...ow_a_pause.html
  17. With due respect, that was at 1 p.m. and Gammons confirms the deal about 20 minutes ago. Still, it's just Gammons' take but I'd think he wouldn't say it's a done deal if it weren't.
  18. Dontrelle and Cabrera to Tigers, confirmed?: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?...winter_meetings ed. beaten to the punch.
  19. The John Cougar Mellencamp Ford tough "Like A Rock" song that has been playing as a t.v.commercial for what seems like a decade now.

  21. Missed this thread. If there's more interest down the road, I'd like to hop in the mix, so to speak.
