Very sad. He was a major influence on Robbie Robertson. True story, he nearly played at my wedding reception. Backed out at the last minute sadly. LouieB

It is really sweet that Wilco is giving the opening slots to Chicago bands in general. Bravo. LouieB

Shameless self promotion one more time. Rosie and I are doing one of our joint shows on her show the Devils Radio on WDBX.org tonight at 10 PM Central time. We are playing covers and some will be crazy and some regular. Look for a healthy dose of Wilco being covered and covered as well as Dylan, the Beatles, and other crazy stuff. Tune us in. Streaming as usual on WDBX.org community radio in Carbondale IL. LouieB

E. Costello doesn't want you to buy his new box set
LouieB replied to tugmoose's topic in Someone Else's Song
Totally disingenuous on Elvis' part. The Louis Armstrong Material appears to be lots of stuff already released and which most Armstrong fans already have. Still might be good for someone who hasn't heard much of him though. If Elvis really doesn't like the price of his own set, why not cut the price? Most Costello fans will want it anyway and probably won't want the Armstrong material which is clearly from serveral generations ago and much which is pretty common. Oh well. Either way Costello will do okay and Armstrong is always worth promoting. The music business is always interesting. L -
I really would like a single ticket for the Opera House in Chicago. Thanks. Really LouieB

Great one for sure, but not greater than the Byrds. LouieB

Sadly Paul Motian passed away today. Great drummer with the original Bill Evans Trio and later he did extensive recording with Keith Jarrett and many other musicans as well as recoridng and playing with his own groups. Another great one gone. LouieB

Definitely. LouieB

Wilco will definitely get a nomination. LouieB

Very cool. LPs are still a very small part of the picture. I guess I never realized how many cassettes were sold back in the 80s. I almost never bought anyway pre-recorded ones. LouieB

Deerhoof discusses Tweedy collab./sons/touring with Wilco
LouieB replied to Jonny Abrams's topic in Just A Fan
I think they have their math all wrong as far as the Tweedy-Miller kids are concerned. They weren't that old in 2007. I saw them open for Wilco at one of the Auditorium shows and they sounded like crap, so the story of not really getting a proper soundcheck sounds about right. I understand they are very good, but that night they really sounded awful. Too bad. LouieB -
When I was in Springfield this week I checked out the seletion of Redbone LPs at Recycled Records. I almost popped for a few, but then I thought, Why? If anyone wants them let me know and I will try and get you some the next time I go south. They had several different ones. LouieB

Takes me back to the same time and also more hair, and a lot less grey.. If you want a tape player, visit your local Salvation Army store or other thrift store, they carry lots of them along with speakers, etc. As far as the death of CDs, I just recieved a very nice copy brand new copy of a reissued Julius Hemphill LP that is long out of print and never been reissued on CD until now. It got a great review for its sound and packaging in the NY Times. CDs ain't dead. They may be injured, but clearly the market for hardcopy digital is not yet over. LouieB

There is a guy here in Chicago named Dustin Drase who has a cassette only record label. If they guy sells 200 it is a huge run. I have never bought one, but I feel like I should just to help him out. He is always at the record shows. Seems like a lonely life selling cassettes of hipster bands to other hipsters. LouieB

Cassettes are not being sold in big box stores. They are a specialty item based on small labels or artists producing them for special audiences. Cassettes ain't coming back to the mass market. Sometimes they are carried in indie stores. LouieB

For sure. But not just young people buy music. While old people buy less music than young people, it is still going to be a few decades before all of us old people die and only those with computers are buying music. As far as cassettes. Without hipsters there would be NO cassettes produced anymore. Cassettes are dead except in the hipster communites. LouieB

The death of CDs is an exaggeration and this is an urban myth. For any group that wants to sell music to the vast majority of the public, they are still going to put out CDs. While the bottom has fallen out of of the used CD market, it is not going away any time soon. Vinyl records are not going to re-replace CDs and downloads are not going to totally eliminate physical disks. Someday maybe, but maybe not. Not by the end of this year for sure. What people out in the real world still buy is CDs. Many folks buy MP3s. Only us crazy folks buy LPs. The death of the book is also exaggerat
