I used to own an olve drab green Nova. Great car. Not such a great song, but I kind of like hearing it because I owned a similar car. LouieB

Well MAYBE!! Read the disertation on The Band's website about what it should be. Or is it? Fanny/Annie.... LouieB

Take the money and run, but times have changed. I suppose the real issue that no one has asked if "how much" exposure would this particularly competition net? Ultimately I am guessing not that much. LouieB

Well considering they are both pretty great on Big Pink, I certainly would agree that The Weight has a slight edge over Released as a performance in general from that album. We are certainly talking minor issues with both songs really. I just personally think that I shall be released is a crazy good song. LouieB

So the question is; do you want the exposure or money? LouieB

No offense, but without Pops there wouldn't be a Mavis in more ways than one!! LouieB

You mean Pops Staples? Or is there some other "older black dude" singing it it? LouieB

Chicago loves Wilco so much the city gave them the loft for free.....(a bunch of buildings were just torn down nearly next door, wonder what that means.) LouieB

I Shall be Released is a great song (greater than The Weight) and perfectly appropriate for big sing alongs. The contrast of these songs is pretty interesting; written at about the same time, Dylan's command of his lyric is much more impressive than Robbie's. LouieB

Which issues are they? Publishing companies have been ripping off songwriters since the beginning of time. On the other hand as Lenny Bruce used to say about the phone company..... LouieB

Wow, this is long. Too long for me to read today for sure. Sounds like we need to take a load of Robbie.... LouieB

First, the Staple Singers LP that Life During Wartime is on is just called The Staple Singers and is on Private I records which is a Columbia imprint, so it seems from 1985, so close to the end of their career. David Byrne had some input and plays on part of it. Of course Pops was in David Bryne's movie True Stories around that time. The Weight is a great song on many levels, but the lyrics, well....kinda hippie surreal. Don't get me wrong, I have been listening and singing along most of my life, but really?? I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin' about half past dead; I just need some

It was cool and embarrassing all at the same time. I rarely listen to show recordings, but this was a great show. LouieB

Fitzgeralds is his home away from home. Seen him there a few times, mostly during American Music Fest. LouieB

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.

Right you are. My favorite veggie spot was Blind Faith in Evanston, which started out as a total hippie place, morphed into a moderate and tolerable neighborhood spot and has since transitioned into an upscale(ish) hipster joint. I no longer go there because the prices are so high. It is just vegetables after all. What the hell do they cost? Slaughtering seitan is an expensive process I guess. For a semi-veggie, still hippie place try the Heartland Cafe. The food is uneven, better sometimes then others, but it isn't really hipster, still pretty solidly hippie. LouieB -

It gets mentioned in a song or two by Scotland Yard Gospel Choir. Since I am so infrequently in that neighborhood to eat, I have not eaten there in years. I remember when it was the Bread Shop Kitchen. Good place as I recall, but a total hipster joint if ever there was one. LouieB -
I found it on an LP. It may be on Itunes or somewhere like that as well. LouieB

The Weight does carry around some extra baggage doesn't it? I can understand a certain weariness with the song. The Staple Singers were the masters of the faux gospel songs (along with real gospel of course). They also got plenty of mileage out of Slippery People too. I recently found a version they did of Life During Wartime. All of this sounds like gospel music in their hands. LouieB

Since also becoming a vegetarian I don't hit either place much either.. I have been to Valois lots of times in recent years and they make plenty of breakfast type stuff that veggies (not vegans) can eat though. Manny's on the other hand, not so much. I still recommend Valois to everyone. Nice, cheap (cheaper than Manny's) and unassuming. While there have been articles in the papers about what a veggie friendly city Chicago is, if you go off the beaten track it isn't all that friendly. Stay in the hipster hoods and you can be a vegetarian pretty easily. But Chicago is still a meat town any -
Cool....feel free to burn me a copy of you would. No rush. Will buy you a few drinks at the Green Mill if we meet up then. LouieB

Maybe a 20 year retrospective would be in order. I love the Who too, but have always enjoyed the two LP version well enough. As with all the Beach Boys box sets (Smile and Pet Sounds), they seem totally overblown to me. Some folks want every rehersal of this material, I am just not one of those people. Every box set has a market in mind. LouieB

Manny's is really the last of a dying breed of cafeterias. There was a place like it up on Clark St. that moved and is still called the same thing. So many places have transitioned into something hip. Manny's ain't hip and ain't healthy. Its still a place to go get yourself a heart attack on a plate. And maybe see some pols or something. Yikes, 5 CDs of Quadrophenia. I mean I love it but not that much. Would buy an expanded YHF if it is offered I suppose. LouieB

Never saw that show, but have seen Arlo many times over the years. His act hasn't changed much in 40 years though, he just has a whole lot of grey long hair now. It used to be fun to see him with Pete Seeger. Now he tours with his kids instead. LouieB

I guess I should get a copy of the LH show so I can hear Jeff's semi-sarcastic shout out to ME. Gawd that was embarrassing!! LouieB
