Sameless promotion time ONCE again. This time Rosie and I are doing a show tomorrow March 8, 2012 at 10 PM CT. The theme is built around a caberet show Rosie is in this weekend so we will be playing vocal jazz, vaudeville blues, Kurt Weill, show tunes and assorted other dramatic stuff. Tune in on WDBX.org for this type of music and lots of witty intergenerational banter between my daughter LouieB

The Complete Arista Recordings of Anthony Braxton

That looks like a good show too. A bit late for a work night, but remind me. Too much to do in this burg. Actually I was going to go tonight, but one of the folks who wanted to go is sick. Still kind of late on a work night, but what the hell. LouieB -
None of this is really about birth control and who should or should not pay for it; it is about Rush ripping on someone for three days who was just expressing an opinion that is fairly maiinstream (maybe not to some the Catholics.) Actually NOW it is about the money. You can't run a radio show without sponsors. There was a time when evangelical Protestants would not have come to the defense of the Catholic Church because they didn't even feel that Catholics were Christians. Times sure have changed. It was in the dark ages, pre1960s, when the spector of a Catholic president (JFK) was a co

In recent months my wife has fallen in love with the guy, so I bought this for her yesterday. When describing what he does to people the other night I got a negative reaction. For me, having seen him a number of times, it is the "one man band" aspect of his performances which begins to get old. He is a master player and there are times I wish he would just play straight, with a band, like the old days with Bowl of Fire. LouieB

The Complete Arista Recordings of Anthony Braxton

I bought this set when I read about it in the New Yorker a year or so ago. Great stuff. I am sure it overlaps with the Columbia Lester Young Story LPs, but this seems to have lots of alternate versions and outtakes. I keep trolling eBay for Mosaic sets, but most go for more than I want to pay. (actually I did find a reasonable copy of the Blue Note Bud Powell recordings.) If you aren't familiar with this material, it is really great and fun. Not that kind of stuff that we talk about here much, but a great introduction to this period and Pres' work. It is not dissimilar from the Decca mater -
Yea, and Rosa Parks didn't HAVE to sit in the front of the bus either. I am certainly not thinking these things are equal. However expressing ones opinion about what they think are their rights certainly doesn't seem that outrageous. Plenty of women do feel that they have a right to have their health insurance cover their health care needs. LouieB

Well if you don't know who Rosa Parks is maybe you can go to Wikipedia. Needless to say Rosa Parks also knew she was protesting against the prevailing opinion of her culture and chose to do what she did anyway. Like I said, maybe it isnt exactly the same, but taking a stand is what both did. LouieB

And Rosa Parks knew that African Americans were supposed to sit on the back of buses too. Okay fine. So it isn't quite the same thing. Maybe this woman is grinding an axe that she shouldn't be grinding at Georgetown, but Rush's lambasting her was pretty over the top don't you think? LouieB

Poor Rush. LouieB

Career spannning? It was recorded during one tour; how is that career spanning? LouieB

Yea particularly gas prices. All Obama has to do is wave his hand and gas prices will fall. It has nothing to do with private sector speculation or anything like that. LouieB

Even Ron Paul knows he isn't going to win. Ron Paul is a serious non-contender. (Cue the Marlon Brando quote from On the Waterfront.) He is mostly doing it for the entertainment value. Big shock for Obama supporters (like me) - Obama is also supported by corporations and rich people. Wow, NO SHIT??!!??! Obaman can't deliver every promise? Also no big secret - who can? Every politician can promise the moon (which Gingrich did) and won't be able to deliver. Big news - the President of the USA doesn't run the country all by himself. WOWOWOW!!! LouieB

The Constitution is like the Bible. People read into it whatever they want, Loose construction or strict construction or batshit crazy construction. LouieB

When is this being released for real?? This Tuesday? LouieB

Interesting article in the NY Times today about Rick Santorum. Of course it is just liberal crap trap, but for those of us who don't care, its pretty mind blowing. LouieB From ‘Nominal Catholic’ to Clarion of Faith By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG and LAURIE GOODSTEIN GREAT FALLS, Va. — Rick Santorum was, in his own words, a “nominal Catholic” when he met Karen Garver, a neonatal nurse and law student, in 1988. As they made plans to marry and he decided to enter politics, she sent him to her father for advice. Dr. Kenneth L. Garver was a Pittsburgh pediatrician who specialized in medical gen

Clearly you are missing something. If your favorite radio station were any good, it could compete against the giant corporations and do just fine. It's their problem. (tongue firmly in cheek in case you can't figure that out.) Free and unfettered libertarians really don't give a shit that you have to now listen to crappy stations in your area. Start your own if you really care. (More TIC) LouieB

If I read Wikipedia correctly it looks like 3/5 of the original members are now gone. LouieB

Rosie lives down that way. Luckily Carbondale is about 40 miles down the road and she lives in a basement. I do know a person or two who lives there though. LouieB

I downloaded an Audible copy of Kafka on the Shore next. Will have to try these out too. thanks for the recommendations. What's wrong with magical realism anyway. Made Gabriel Garcia Marquez a rich man. LouieB

I never really looked at my Oliver! original cast recording to see if Davie Jones was on there. I guess he was in the cast later on, because he is not on teh album. Too bad. Child actors do grow up fast I guess. LouieB

Sheesh, crazy. How many lMC5ers are left? Suddenly I am feeling very old. LouieB

In retrospect the show holds up surprising well (unlike other shows of its time like Batman), if you suspend a whole lot of belief. Sure it was coriny as well but I can actually sit and watch these things still. And yes, I agree that the music itself, also somewhat pre-fad, holds up amazingly well. Had anyone at the time suggested this whole enterprise would last the decades, I doubt anyone would have taken them seriously. I traded something to my cool HS friend David to get the Monkees' first album. He was very dismissive of them at the time. But then again he introduced me to the Velve

By comparison Obama is doing just fine. He isn't a crazed theocratic bigot for one. Meanwhile I may have suggested that Hillary was going to win the primary last time. I think that was a possibility. Unlike this election where Romney doesn't stand a chance against the incumbent Obama. LouieB

They are certainly worth seeing if only out of curiosity about how Uncle Tupelo stayed together as long as it did. Having seen SV and Jay several times over the last couple decades I am kind of done with him, although I may see him again if the opportunity arises. I may have seen them for the last time at the Vic where I actually thought the show went on too long and the band only seemed to be excited when they played the old stuff. Jay is not Mr. Excitment and many of the songs sound alike. LouieB

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.

I would also recommend the Garfeild Park Conservatory. Just down the street from it is the Inspiration Kitchen which is part of the Inspiration Corp, a Wilco supported organizaiton (see Lincoln Hall show) and the food is excellent and the room nice. If you are bored with the usual tourists destinations, hitting the west side is a good antidote. A drive down any of the east west streets, such as Madison, Washington or Roosevelt are all interesting to me. As mentioned, Out of the Past Records is an interesitng place, but I must admit I found it slightly intimidating and over paid for a ra
