What was/is your favorite decade for music?
LouieB replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
1920s. LouieB -
This is very sad. Earl was a true innovator. I only saw him once, which was at the November 1969 Vietnam Moritorium march on Washington. It is mentioned in one of the other posts how he was one of the few country musicians to lend his name to the effort to end the war. To say he was influential is an understatement. Sadly Earl developed arthritis later in life which impeded his playing. But his kids sure became good musicians. RIP Earl. LouieB

Should have passed Single Payer System
LouieB replied to IRememberDBoon's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Yea, but not before that. So I suppose that is a long time, but maybe not what the founders where expecting. LouieB -

This whole mess only goes to show how important the Supremes have become. Where are all the conservatives decrying that this is not what the founding fathers intended the Supreme Court to do? LouieB -

Yea, like that would have flown. LouieB -
Maybe they will play Lollapalooza again this year. No acts are yet announced. LouieB

I actually went out and got the LP today. I rarely get anything on the first day out, but I was curious. It is just as good as any of the rest of them but not any better. It is certainly a post-rehab kind of thing and clearly done quickly (which it was), so it has a bit of a sameness to most of the songs. Nearly all are in the same tempo with the same arrangement. (It would be nice if he had let a horn player or two step out from the line and take a bit of a solo. edit - I take that back...nice muted trumpet on Lower East Side) At least a copule songs are a bit more uptempo. Record Store Say-The Whole Love Deluxe Box Set
LouieB replied to DickDarlington's topic in Just A Fan
No shit. I just think its funny that they are putting all these formats out in so many different configurations. I thinkj I have paid my Whole Love dues at the moment. LouieB -
I plan on getting it soon too. Antoines in Austin? I was there once. Got to shake hands with Antoine just a few days before he went to prison. LouieB

Record Store Say-The Whole Love Deluxe Box Set
LouieB replied to DickDarlington's topic in Just A Fan
Okay, lets see.....I bought the deluxe CD set, the LP set with the CD and got the single with I love my label now I have to get this? LouieB -
The guy is clearly on a roll. I need to check out where he is playing in May. He has gone from being an opening act with an audience of a couple dozen people to a big star. Nice work. LouieB

My classical music suggestion....turn on the local classical radio station and give that a listen for awhile. Or go to your local resale shop and look in the record section. High quality classical records almost always turn up at your local Salvation Army or other brand of resale store. I have collected hundreds that way. Good stuff too; lots of Deutche Gramaphone and other high quality classical imprints. LouieB

Adele is the number #6 selling UK album of all time...really???
LouieB replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
See what I added to the post after listening to it. No spat here at all. The Dirty Projectors are an okay band, they just don't have anything to catch the imagination of the great unwashed music buying public, other than the Brooklyn/Portlandia crowd. The cover is pretty good, but then just about any cover of this song would be a winner in my book, it is one of the greatest songs ever. LouieB -

Yup out of nowhere. It is interesting that the defense of these guys (who are good musicians) is with a song they didn't write and which has really great words and melody. This was not an issue specifically with this band, but with many who do what they do, some of which I do like. The point was not to knock them, but to show that the vast majority of the music buying public like to be able to hear a song with lyrics and a melody they might be able to sing along to. Nothing wrong with art rock, but it isn't going to sell millions of copies of any album. And the Dirty Projectors are actual -
I also believe that the Democrats could strike a deal. At this point the leftish and leftists of the Democratic base aren't going to give Barack the benefit of the doubt and the rest of the country on the Republican side is either so racist or so conservative (maybe not both at the same time) that they want him out no matter what. So Romney can have this huge barrel of worms as far as I am concerned. Good fucking luck to him. He has his head so far up his ass, along with that rod he has up there, that I doubt he could fix anything at this point. LouieB

Still not surprised about people buying music. Susan Boyle sold the shit out of her album (s) and they were just crap. But it was the kind of crap alot of folks can relate to; familiar songs, melody, orchestration, etc. Adele is about the same way with a touch more originality. He songs sound like what you have heard before, but it sounds just enough new that it has interest. I gotta be honest, there is so much indie rock that just has little to catch people's attention other than cache. That works for the hipster community, but not much beyond the walls of Portlandia. I am not surprised -

Fersure. Alot of folks here are entrenched in the indie rock ghetto, thinking that's that kind of stuff everyone is listening to, but it isn't. if some of the groups we talk about here sell even 10,000 that's huge. It still shocks me that so many people don't even know who Wilco is, much less try and explain who some of these other acts we talk about. Pitchfork doesn't rule most people's lives. LouieB -

Yea, XRT hits Adele pretty hard. But everyone hits her hard. Frankly before I watched the Grammys this year I had not even really been tuned into her that heavily. I thought that song was maybe by TC Tungstill or whatever the hell her name was who had that horse and the cherry tree song that they played ad nauseum a few years back. Alot of these acts have very little to distinguish themselves at this point. But after seeing her I was encouraged that she didn't seem to be the same kind of cookie cutter type pop act. Then again I would not rush out and buy her album either. LouieB -
Obviously NOT a fan, since he is about the most awkward and uncomfortable person ever. There are days I sort of feel like, what the hell, let's give the country back to the Republicans and see if they can actually do any better, such as bring gas prices down, get people back to work, protect the interests of the "exceptional" US of A, etc. I doubt they can actually. edit-did I forget to mention bring down the deficit? I am not a fan, but you are right. She has done it the old fashioned way, no gimmicks, just straight ahead vocals and songs. We can dis mainstream music all we want here, but ultimately this is what most folks want and clearly the market has spoken. It took decades for even Pink Floyd to sell all those copies of Dark Side. Frankly if I don't hear Dark Side again that is fine too. LouieB -
Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.
LouieB replied to LouieB's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
While the Polish American Museum is near downtown it is actually in Wicker Park. For those really interested in eastern European stuff, there is also an actual Lithuanian musieum here as well. I have not been to any of the ethnic museums, but there is also a Mexican Arts museum in Pilsen that I understand is very good. LouieB -
Santorum just likes beating up on women and gays. Other than that he has no agenda. Meanwhile I am with Sparky on at least one thing. We could do with less government. Unfortunately it isn't going to be in the same areas that most libertarians or hardly any conservatives want the government to disappear in. Even Ron Paul, the great lover of freedom, is going to want to control women's bodies. Go figure. While I think I could switch over to Republican and vote for him just to fuck with Romney, there are a few local folks in the primaries I do want to vote for. As it is, Santorum didn't

Sparky is just flogging theories to fit the day. The government has been "restricting" freedom of speech, assembly, etc since day one. All this crap about the constitution being destroyed by Obama is just that, crap. Hes no worse and in some cases better than plenty of other Presidents on this. It's like no one was ever deported, spied on, imprisioned, wire tapped, or had their personal liberties abridged before 2008. Once again, why even try to counter all this garbage? (Just give Santorum or Romney the presidency and see what happens. Hell give it to Ron Paul, he'll start restricting

That joke originated as what is the difference between capitalism and communism?? Nothing new here...move along. LouieB

its funny. alot of this stuff might be true, but less regulation isn't really the answer to most of it. LouieB
