Yea, I was in Grafton IL last year for the first time. Interesting place. Google some of the material on Paramount. There is some pretty interesting stuff about it. When you consider that most of those we now think of as the major country blues figures traveled there to cut records, it is stunning. I know this isn't about jazz any more. Someday I would like to check out Grafton WI, even though there isn't much really left there. I mean who would have thought a back water place like that would hold so much musical history. LouieB -
Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.

If folks who come to town for the solo shows or vacations and stay places and do stuff can post up their experiences it will really help those coming afterwards. Thanks. LouieB -
yea, but he still sucks.....just kidding of course. Even with his faults, Obama still kicks ass as far as I am concerned for all the reasons mentioned above. Sure Democracy Now can pick on him, as can most leftists, but if he weren't significantly left of center the right wouldn't be doing double back flips to try and defeat him this time. We can split all the hairs we want about the details of certain policy and political issues we are unhappy with him about, but just sit for one minute and consider a Romney presidency or more startling a Santorum presidency. And the absurdity of Romney

Wisconsin actually. Although Grafton IL is a pretty cool town. I have never actually been to Grafton WI, just passed it on the highway. The idea of the blues singers from the south having to go to Grafton Wisc always amazes me. But then againi alot of them ended up in NYC to record as well. How Paramount Records ended up in a backwater like that is crazy, but then again the Gennett company was in Richmond, Indiana and a bunch of great old recordings were made there as well. Yea, actually that was pretty much of a rhetorical question. I know what the answer is. Regarding armed guards, etc, to protect the President. Obviously they ARE necessary because there is a pretty clear record of assassination successes and attempts. I am all in favor of free speech, all of it. But even for that there are some limitations. And of course unlimited amounts of money are now classified as speech, so despite all the talk of saving the Constitution, the concept of free speech is a bit different now than 200 years ago. And of course back then, not everyone could vote either.

Perhaps. Columbia College has indicated they are shutting down their black music history center. What a loss. it would be interesting to kinow where the Okeh studio was. Parmount mostly recorded in Grafton, but I guess they also recorded here too. LouieB -

Interesting question. So many times I look at reissues of music frojm all genres that list Chicago as the origin of the music. The really famous studios such as Columbia in NYC or RCA and Nashville, Sun in Memphis or Parmount in Grafton Wisc, Rudy Van Gelder in NJ,, Chess on Michicagn Ave, etc. are all pretty clear, but the rest?? It would be interesting to know. Certainly a whole ton of stuff was recorded here. It could well have been in radio studios, hotel ballrooms, or some other hall. I have no idea. LouieB -
I just love this destruction of the Constitution talk. if we had it Sparky's way the Constitution would be exactly the same as it was back when it was written including slaves and no voting for women, etc. the Constitution just isn't that fragile. Ain't buying it. LouieB

Let's see who was President in 1971? Oh yea Richard Nixon. Boy that was the good old days, no one took away any personal freedoms under that guy. LouieB

I have decided it is time to actually read "Revelations". I gotta find out what all the fuss is about. Why do people need to make shit up about Obama? Does racism really run that deep in this country or is it simplly people are that wacked out. I can honestly understand (to a degree) people being upset about the "reach" of government, but I just don't understand how Obama could possibly be any worse than the way things have been for decades in regards to government control of our lives. true, but he won't. luckily. Politics can literally end friendshps. I have recounted this before, but will again. I had a very old and dear friend who decided to start writing email screeds regarding Obama's anti-Israel position, even before he was elected. These diatribes were peppered with birther, secret Islamic crap and I asked him to either stop sending them to me or let me respond to his mailing list. He would not let me respond to his mailing list, so I figured he really lwasn't interested in a dialogue at all. His main thing was that ONLY Israel mattered and that Obama was out to

Few people share your view, to say the least. When it comes to immigration, people freak out. Needless to say, without a healthy dose of new immigrants, both legal and undocumented, a heck of alot of work would not get done in this country. Also few people can withstand the test of never having employed an undocumented worker. Maybe not directly, but there are sure plenty who do the work for us in all areas. (You had best not have your grass cut, your house painted, eat in a restaurant, take your clothes to be cleaned, etc.) Meanwhile a president who is not tough on the undocumented is

After I posted up - a really good book on the Vietnam War is Michael Herr's "Dispatches." LouieB -
There are some super upsetting things that "the government" is doing which gets put at Obama's feet because he is the presient. The Frontline on ICE the other night discussed some pretty distrurbing things about deportations. But I believe Obama does want comprehensive immigration reform and Congress just ain't going there. So we plod on and break up families and do crazy stuff in the name of controlling illegial immigration. Rommney has already said he is going to be hard on the undocumented and probably isn't going to do anything about this if he could. I think Obama would if he could.

I wouldn't call it boring exactly. But he does seem rather set in his ways. LouieB

I would go with the greatest hits if you know NOTHING about UT. Anodyne is really great, but not really like AM at all. It is also a good place to start or finish. I would just get all four and be done with it really. I am sure there are used CDs floating around that are plenty cheap. LouieB

South Korea is NOT southeast Asia, or at least in my opinion it isn't. Heck I don't even think of the Phillipines as SE Asian, but I suppose technically it is. How old are the students? Stuff from the Vietnam - War Paco's Story is good, as is The Things They Carried. A good movie about the war in Cambodia is The Killing Fields, but not for anyone too young. Unfortunately the war is what is embedded in many American's brains with that part of the world. But again the area includes Thailand and Malasyia as well as what used to be called Indo-China. Oh a great book about SE Asia is The Q -

Southeast Asia is a pretty diverse place. How many countries are you taking in in. Just Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos alone are very different in culture, language, etc. Throw in some of the other countries and I don't know what to tell you. LouieB -
I listened to this album this weekend and it seems pretty straight forward for a change. Nice back-up vocals from Nora O'Connor on many of the songs. LouieB

He's so hilarious I can only stand to listen to him for a few minutes at a time. Dim bulbs or not, Colbert is clearly an entertainer. Rush is much much more. LouieB
