Old Town School compilation to include Tweedy track

Have they tapped into the U of C Folk Fest? Strange. LouieB -
I didn't hear Wilco, but I saw The Whole Love and the can being sold at Garrett's popcorn. Didn't buy either, but it sure was cool anyway. I did buy caramel corn though. It sure was (is) good. LouieB

Even in the interview he didn't seem to mind. As long as we keep buying his records and going to his shows I think he will be fine. LouieB

Americans have been misprounouncing his name for so long that it isn't going to change. Mostly it is the NPR crowd that has changed due to the recent interview where he pointed out the correct pronunciation. I have trouble thinking of him as Ray Daviz myself. LouieB

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.

I guess I am the wrong person to ask about Christmas. The Walmut Room may still be something special to do. I would think it be more interesting than Perry's Deli, which I don't remember being that special when I used to work downtown. But then the Yelpsters think it is pretty cool. I would check out Manny's on the near south side instead for more local character, but be prepared to spend some dough. Or if you are in Hyde Park already to see stuff at the MSI, go to Valois which is just a cafeteria, but has good cheap food, good sandwhiches, and is a Hyde Park staple. The Christmas marke -

Did you buy it or are you going to buy it? Just curious. LouieB

Wrong thread wrong time... I don't know how anyone could pick Infidels (which sounds like it was recorded ins someone's basement)or Desire ( which is really uneven) over Another Side or John Wesley Harding, but that is just me. Having said that, Jokerman is a great song.as are "some" of the songs on Desire. It is a tribute to Dylan's genuis that we even are arguing over this stuff. LouieB

I like the alternate tracks and the unreleased songs. Up to Me appeared on the Biograph comp. Hard Rain is one of the better live Dylan official releases actually, although I remember some of the material from the TV show being even better. LouieB

Rhett Miller and Jon Brion cover California Stars on new album

I saw him sing this once. Sounded pretty good in person. LouieB -

You learn something new every day. I had not heard of this singer at all I don't think. While she may have been early to sing Leonard Cohen I am guessing Judy Collins beat her to it. Not sure though. LouieB -

Will eventually get to old time music, also one of my interests. I find it interesting that alot of comments here are about artists who didn't really record much (or at all really), rather than musicians who were established and no longer are in favor. LouieB -
Agreed Wendy. Great show and great band. These guys fit right in with LouieB's rule of contemporary music: never before have musicians played better. These guys are smokin hot musicians and singer. Great stuff, even while being derivative. Check out their album, its really great. (Do they have part time back-up singers and horn section on the road or was that just a hometown thing?) LouieB
-
This may have been mentioned somewhere before, but since the actual record just came out in the last few weeks I figure it deserves some additional mention. JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound have released a record which contans their smokin hot cover of "I am trying to break your heart" on it. They do a great live version too. So if they come to your town see them and if you want one of the better Wilco covers up to this point, check out their album released on Bloodshot Records which is called "Want More". The rest of the album is pretty good too, if you like retro soul type material. Loui

One additional totally curmudgenly comment about all this. Yep I am old, older than most folks here. Part of the reason that this era of music is no longer in fashion is that old school songwriting is also not in fashion. I mean songs with melody you can sing, words that have meaning, structure such as verse chorus verse, etc. Not that there is anything wrong with freewheeling, non-structured songs, which are the bread and butter of indie rock/fok of the current era. it was just a different time when people wanted something different from the music they listened to. I don't know that any -

Blues Project is one of my all time faves. My friend Dave had a copy of Projections when we were in high school. I do believe that the Blues Project LPs have been reissued on vinyl. they are still around in the used bins as well. I think I have three different copies of Projections, mono, stereo, Forcast, Folkways, not sure why I have that many. I would also add those. I did mention Phil Ochs in the orginial post I need to comb through the folk records before I move on to other stuff. I forgot a few like Peter LaFarge also. Okay, sitting in the basement if I double up...sorry David Bl -
So how do you hipsters feel about this?

I wish I could see this. My stupid work made my laptop flash unavailable. Beards are so last generation. I have had one since 1968 (mostly). LouieB -
All in all this is kind of a cool promo when you think about it. Garretts is a local chain, makes great popcorn and employees lots of local folks, Hull House is a great place to drop some money, and it gets Wilco out there to people who ordinarily wouldn't know about them (believe it or not.) LouieB
-
Hull House is a good place to donate some money. I prefer just plain cararmel corn. But just for the record, Garretts is some really fine corn, maybe some of the best you will ever eat. But you can go in and buy a couple bags for alot less without the can and drop four bucks on Hull House yourself if you like. LouieB

Cool story. I always think they are singing about Hammond Indiana, but of course I knew that wasn't right..... LouieB

Bumping this even though it doesn't need bumping. With a week's worth of Wilco shows coming up in a couple months alot of folks from out of town will be coming in. Take time to explore Chicago between standing outside in the cold if you have time. And it could be pretty cold too. Make sure to dress in layers. Luckily there will be no need to stand out on Wacker Drive waiting in line. I have not been by the Opera house of late, but Wacker Drive was torn up. Anyone have an update on that construction project? LouieB -
Agreed. Some of his best work in years actually. Not necessarily one of Kerouacs better books, but one of Farrat's better albums of late. 20 years since March? Gawd, I am getting old. LouieB

XRT occasionally rolls out something diifferent. Good for them. Even Wilco, which they do play, don't get played nearly as often as the typical XRT artists. "If you go down to Hammond...." LouieB

All good stuff and all people I have albums of (including some of these). Just picked up Clarence Gatemouth Brown with Roy Clark for 2 bucks recently. The Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet LPs are also good. LouieB -

Bromberg's LPs are all easy to find used just about anywhere. He also was on New Morning with Dylan, so just about everyone has him on something. I saw him play with Levon and Danko once and some of the lesser guys from the Eagles also both in clubs. Like I said he showed up alot over the years playing with folks. His standby number is Blind Willie McTell's Statesboro Blues. That people were excited that Bromberg was a surprise guest is interesting since Bromberg was never a big star, although back in his heyday I did see him play at the Arie Crown. On another note. Interesting that y
