  1. I agree entirely. this album not only sounds great, but I hear new stuff with each listen. Certainly it is part of the folk tradition. By the same token, people have been borrowing Dylan's words for years as well. Its all part of the game. LouieB
  2. I still need to get the new album. Of course I NOW remember that gig, that was very memorable. In fact it was a gas particularly when we went to the bar after the show and hung with the band. LouieB
  3. Well sure it is Southern Rock, which was what some country rock was called before it was called alt.country, which is basically what BBJ is, so I was going generic I guess. Neither could be really classified as "country", but both have roots in country. Neither twangs very much since both rock more than twang. Either way I concur, I would like to see this show. LouieB
  4. It doesn't happen all the time, but I have seen it. LouieB
  5. Certainly good luck on this. Quitting is hard work. LouieB
  6. I finally finished this article (RS goes straight to the pile in the bathroom.... ) and frankly the article has little of interest in it other than the fact that Keith Richards was a junkie and that some of the others around him indulged too. Perhaps the book has some details about the actual music making that are interesting, but I found the totality of the article kinda dull. The author's claim that a whole bunch of people are now dead (including John Lennon and Gram Parsons) as a result of having been involved in these sessions is total bullshit. Sure some became junkies and died (an
  7. This is true. If other artists did it as artistically as he does, there would never be a problem. At least he actually sings this stuff rather than sampling it to enhance a peice of music that would be totally mediocre without a decent sample. LouieB
  8. finally...I was trying to listen to some clips of Catfish Haven yesterday and couldn't get them to work. I like the name alone. Is this show gonna sell out? I figure I will make a last minute decision on it. Incidently Someone still loves Boris Yeltsin got a mention in the Reader this week. Weird. LouieB
  9. Sleepy John Estes in "Someday Baby" I am glad someone posted this because I have been wracking my brain for weeks trying to remember who did this originally. This obscure poet may have botten pinched for some lyrics, but clearly there are more references per square inch to other people's work than ever. None the less, this is an album that gets better with each listen. LouieB
  10. WE 11.08.06 The Metro w/ Venus 3 (Scott McCaughey, Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin) Chicago, IL TH 11.09.06 Magic Bag w/ Venus 3 (Scott McCaughey, Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin) Detroit, MI FR 11.10.06 Mod Club w/ Venus 3 (Scott McCaughey, Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin) Toronto, ON SU 11.12.06 Beachland Ballroom w/ Venus 3 (Scott McCaughey, Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin) Cleveland, OH Anyone up for a major midwest road trip to see all four of these.... Actually I think I will have to be content with the Metro show (although the Beachland would be a gas). LouieB
  11. Me too. I saw DBT once and dug them (take earplugs) and BBJ serveral times. BBJ is worth the price of admission alone. But if you really aren't into "country music" (whatever that means) neither will be your cup of tea. (Hey rareair, which BBJ gig was that?) LouieB
  12. Yea, those films are pure genius.... Actually compared to Garden State, they have far more depth, I am just fucking around. LouieB
  13. Exile became a masterpiece, not unlike Pet Sounds, over time. While it has some great stuff on it, my heart is still with many of those albums of the London years such as Aftermath, Between the Buttons, Beggars Banquet, and all those great singles from the early days. LouieB
  14. That was the kind of info I was talking about. Charlie is actually a fairly proficient drummer, I can't figure out how he couldn't play a figure like that. LouieB
  15. I like Scrubs, but sometime last season it jumped the shark. Garden State was enjoyable, but had some gratuitous bullshit in it that did nothing for it. Not a great film, but good enough. LouieB
  16. You may be right, at least they brought in keyboard players alot, but I have always assumed that the rhythm section was the Stones. LouieB
  17. I would buy Kicking Television and see if this band meets your needs based on what it sounds like today. LouieB
  18. Not our federal senators, they are very good.....this year we are voting for state offices.... LouieB
  19. Actually this was one of the main criticisms of it when it came out, that it sounded like crap. That hasn't stopped people from treating it like a masterpeice in the meantime. LouieB
  20. Nah, I mean so far there is alot of fucking each others girl friends, taking alot of drugs, hanging out with drug dealers and being broke and evading taxes. I was hoping for some info on how the album became a classic (because it wasn't when it first came out...) Even the little writeups on the songs indicated that much of it was done on the fly and with session people. LouieB
  21. Did I miss this earlier.... Happy Birthday!!!! LouieB
  22. Yea, I am always ready to party..... I am sitting on the Golden Smog fence...will someone push me one way or the other? Does someone have an extra ticket they aren't using. LouieB
  23. After preaching vociferously about NOT voting for third party candidates in national elections, I plan to vote FOR some third party candidates in the Illinois election. I guess even I have come to the conclusion that some offices just have no major party candidates that don't suck. Sadly I can't be too much more specific about this because I actually work for one of those candidates in a state deptartment he controls....oy vay.... LouieB
  24. I read about half that article last night and I am still waiting to read something interesting...... LouieB
