I wanted to talk about Jeff Tweedy's former beard..... LouieB

I really don't care. I am not being particulary cynical here, I am just tired of these best of lists. Frankly if you pick out any 200 hits or obscurities from the 60s I think you can make a case for them. LouieB

Yellowstone is incredible. I have not been for 30 years, but was there for the first time in the early 60s. It is all amazing. Don't miss the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, it is spectacular too. LouieB

I did not volunteer for that day, so I will be party ready... LouieB

The Coltrane on Atlantic is all good (My Favorite Things as well), then move on to Impulse. If you know nothing about jazz and just want some general stuff, I always recommend the Smithsonian Classic Jazz collection. It is a great survey of most of the great musicians and representative numbers, from the earliest days, but not up to the present. I looked through the 5 disk comp that came out with the PBS Jazz series and it seems pretty good too and works closer to the present and includes some of the same material. LouieB

I was out of town or I would have made this one. Bought a copy from Sam herself yesterday after having talked to Adam about it the day before. Looks great and I can't wait to listen to it this morning. LouieB

Anything on Blue Note, Prestige, Impulse and a number of other standard labels are good. PM me for more specifics. I think we need a FAQ on jazz somehow. I would have to say that Waits is influenced alot by the "cool jazz" from the west coast, so artists like Chet Baker and Jerry Mulligan come to mind. Maybe some Errol Garner and piano stuff like that. There are lots of important and interesting jazz figures, some of which never get mentioned here. The usual Coltrane and Davis and Mingus (and Monk) are certainly important though. LouieB

I have two real Wilco tones, I'm Always in Love and the Late Greats. Both were free more or less. LouieB

Isn't Neil Diamond cool?? Didn't Rick Rubin just work with him?? LouieB

Me either, I was highly disappointed.... LouieB

I can understand this. One year the Blisters and some other kids bands played early, but still your kids are kinda youngg either way. This is an all ages event however.LouieB

What is the name of the box set?? LouieB

After years of hearing on here "where is the new material", now we have some and some people are disappointed. I'm not. LouieB

Barak is in a bit of a sophomore slump here in IL, nothing major, just the bumps in the road that occur from having to sail the waters of politics (how is this for a triple mixed metaphor). A slight mis-statement here and a wrong choice of support for a local candidate and the bloom is slightly off the rose (to quadruple the mixed metaphor.) LouieB

Very cool. My vinyl copy is rather worn out sadly. Some of the Tomato catalogue is in print in some way because the twofer mentioned above was originally released on Tomato. Edit- Okay I did an Amazon search and it does appear that much of it is out of print and selling for high prices, although some is still available used at a reasonable cost. I bought 4 or 5 of the original Tomato LPs as cut outs many many moons ago (at $3 a piece), back when Townes had not yet become in vogue, but was also no longer really of that much interest to most people after his intital recording flurry. I'll be relatively happy to vote for Hillary....particularly if she picks Barak for her running mate. LouieB

So how come that thread got closed.................I was about to say that that's how I dress too. How is that offensive? LouieB

I have always thought that the Old Quarter is probably the best representation of what Townes was like in person. The Tomato records are all good, but sometimes mared by over-arrangement. Some of the later material is mared by Townes' premature aging due to alcholism. Either way there is lots to choose from in his catalogue. LouieB

I have always found this event fun no matter who is playing. It gets progressively more crowded as the day goes on, but early on it is wide open and often the early bands are just as good as the later ones. Incidently two people contacted me about volunteering. LouieB

Which is exactly why I don't do it..... LouieB

Kucinich is also finished, but Obama may still have some legs.... Once again I suspect then when the dust clears a couple years from now, the Dems will put up someone that few people have ever heard of just so they can clear off all the baggage. LouieB

That does look good...thanks. (more ways to spend my hard earned money.) Neko Case in the NY Times gave a shout out to another one of the Eccentric Soul CDs from these guys (Big Mack maybe!!?!?!). And Samorama highly recommends the Belize comp as well. LouieB

FYI....Thax's Myspace says he is 48. LouieB

Yes...that and Live at the Quarter is good as well. LouieB
