  1. Literally dying on stage, and at his own tribute show. The man died as he lived. Unbelievable. Here he is in Slingblade, along with Vic Chestnutt, Mickey Jones, and others: https://youtu.be/L9tK9HYspFM
  2. I prefer the tunes that have both quiet and hard rocking moments.

  4. Ain't Wasting Time No More https://youtu.be/h2Ro7LLEaQQ
  5. That Dark Star may be my favorite. Listening to it in an alternate state really enhances the experience, as I'd imagine it syncs up better with the bands consciousness when it was created. Transcendent. Even the El Paso that follows is palatable. The Sing Me Back Home is pure bliss.
  6. Possibly favorite human/American/singing drummer too (sorry Phil Collins).
  7. Maybe the best one off cover? It is a pretty simple song, wasn't much for them to do with it, maybe too similar to some of their other folky songs. Garcia really shines though.
  8. Some nice jams and hidden gems in the 12/5/71 show. Alternate lyrics to Saturday Night. China Cat jam in NFA. The early Comes a Time is real good too, much prefer it to later versions.
  9. Ratdog. They played a lot of festivals, so couldn't be avoided. They were ok in 96 with Johnnie Johnson on piano, but not great. Last time I won tickets to see them, around 2006, walked out on that show. Bill Walton was there, so at least it wasn't a total bust. If you like Grateful Dead songs, but wished they were played at a much slower pace with fewer guitar solos, Ratdog is the band for you.
  10. The Garcia and Grisman documentary that came out around 2000 also had a soundtrack. It's a nice way to relive memories of watching the movie, I guess...
  11. There are rats everywhere you go, in every sub-culture. I call everyone rats. Sometimes I rat out too. Rats are easy to spot by their general rat-ness.
  12. Phish rats were pretty into patchwork for a while. Donna, ever the trail blazer.
  13. I'd be down for a Monkees style show. To capture psychedelic experience it would have to be pretty funny.
  14. A solid live release from last year via bandcamp, in the vein of Dick's Picks. Pay what you want: https://hissgoldenmessenger.bandcamp.com/album/parkers-picks-vol-1-live-at-the-parish-austin-tx-10-18-2016
  15. Musician bio-pics tend to be pretty cliched, and the best ones need a great actor to pull it off (Ray, Walk the Line). I'm Not There was kind of fun I guess, didn't leave much of an impression.
  16. Goin deep, I like it. Just as much fun to write/read about the Dead as it is to listen. Excellent work! I made a compilation and accompanying booklet, through it up online a few years ago. Anyone interested can check it here: http://walklikeagiant.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html If the links aren't active for downloads, let me know.
  17. Very true on the Keystone stuff being a gold standard of the early era Jerry releases. Similarly, Fire Up+ was a bit cheesy in retrospect, but had some real high moments. Particularly the live recording of Lonely Avenue is one of the peak moments in Garcia's history, and I would speculate documents the beginning of his heroin use, for better, and later, worse. Chilling.
  18. Great song. And he was buddy's with Jerry.
  19. Either Way Should've Been in Love Sunloathe Bull Black Nova Anything from Star Wars Tomorrow Never Know Feel like I've heard everything else
  20. Complaining about bands not playing your town is what it is, but it's been over 5 years since a San Diego show. 8th largest city in the US. Not a suburb of LA. Even the recent shows they've played in LA have been mid-week, so not realistic to get too. Hell's bells.
