  1. Bob Gendron, critic for the Chicago Tribune, tweeted: "Wilco's "Impossible Germany" has become equivalent of Dead's "Playing in the Band": Seemingly mandatory band does it at almost every show." Of course I let him know the Dead only played it that frequently in 1972. Interesting points on the setlist, but one would expect less setlist variation earlier in a band's career, as was the case with the Dead, and more variation as the repertoire expands. Except for greatest hits bands. But Wilco is still touring behind Schmilco, and have pushed previous albums hard on subsequent tours. Maybe the
  2. I got one. I would guess one of the reasons they don't make them all available for download so that people rush to order them when they first come out, for fear of missing out.
  3. Music only editions - unnumbered, no book - are available for the same price. Seems strange, but I guess it's worth what people are willing to pay for it.
  4. I think this is the most psychologically stable and emotionally mature place I've found to discuss Grateful Dead music online. Maybe the predilection towards dad rock helps.
  5. dead.net emailed this fwiw: We are reaching out to you regarding MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT and CORNELL 5/8/77. We are very sorry for the technical issues that have plagued Dead.net since we announced the products. We are working around the clock to get things back up and running smoothly. In the meantime, intermittent orders are still going through. THESE TITLES HAVE NOT SOLD OUT. If you have not been able to complete your order thus far, you are welcome to keep trying. We will update you as soon as the website and shopping cart are back at full capacity. We are very sorry for the inconv
  6. Always considered Comes a Time to be a lesser Jerry ballad, relatively speaking. It's just kinda literal, and I think given somewhat elevated status due to being more of a rarity. I'm not sure that version comes close to Cornell's Morning Dew, which I think deservedly is noted as one of the best single.... Also, Buffalo gets knocked down a peg due to Sunrise. But would likely agree with Buffalo set 1 and Cornell set 2. Was able to get the box late last night. Dead.net redirected to Rhino checkout.
  7. Everything released so far from this tour, tho 4/25 is vinyl only I guess. At this point it would be nice just to have the whole thing, along the lines of Europe 72 and Spring 90. Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, 4/25/77 – April 25, 1977 Grateful Dead Download Series Volume 1 – April 30, 1977 May 1977: Get Shown the Light – May 5 – 9, 1977 Cornell 5/8/77 – May 5, 1977 May 1977 – May 11–17, 1977 Dick's Picks Volume 29 – May 19–21, 1977 Dick's Picks Volume 3 – May 22, 1977 Dave's Picks Volume 1 – May 25, 1977 To Terrapin: Hartford '77 – May 28, 1977 Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings –
  8. 5/19, 5/21, 5/22 and 5/28 have also had official releases. Probably missing a few, but seems like the whole tour will released eventually.
  9. The previous May 77 and June 77 box sets are excellent, so no complaints here. Strong argument for the Dead at their peak.
  10. Some great versions of Looks Like Rain, where the rest of the band drops away and it's just Bob's vocals and Garcia's guitar. That's quintessential GD right there. Thinking 6/22/1991. Great show.
  11. Been enjoying Garcia's playing on Estimated a lot lately, though it certainly isn't fast. Does provide him a dark, weird context to solo in. My favorite part of many Weir tunes is Garcia's contribution. Like in the Dylan covers, Masterpiece, Desolation Row, etc., when Garcia kicks in with the backing vocals, that space right there is heaven, takes it to the next level. "You can hear them blow..."
  12. Got it. I pretty much hate the Dead in the 80's, so that partially explains it. If you dig 80's Dead, you probably like it.
  13. Other than it being a rarity, I can't find anything appealing about Esau. Kind of a clunker.
  14. Vanity Fair review of the Bar-Lev GD doc is pretty glowing: http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2017/01/long-strange-trip-review-grateful-dead-documentary?mbid=social_twitter
  15. Went to college in 93. All the nerds had Billy Joel posters on their walls. I hate them even more now. 18 year old men thinking Billy Joel is cool, in 1993? WTF. Just get your dicks chopped off already.
  16. Can pause/rewind/fast forward when need to take a piss. If you pass out you can finish watching in the morning.
  17. They got a few thousand fans to spend a ridiculous amount of money to see 3 shows in Mexico. An out of towner pulling off the entire run would be challenging. Would have to be people with no real jobs and excess money, so there will be a handful of drug dealers and trustafarians who can pull it off.
  18. The whole concept is being done in part to bust Billy Joel's balls. The piano man was pissed they had a hold on NYE a few years back as he wanted to play MSG, and referred to them as a second rate cover band. Phish responded by playing no covers that NYE run. Billy Joel holds the record for most consecutive sold out shows at MSG - 12. This is not lore, it has been as confirmed as much as can be done.
  19. Can't wait til 50 years from now when we're getting a 65 cd set of all the unreleased stuff from these sessions!
  20. Heard some rumors of a weekend at Alpine and Dick's run as well. Something further west would be nice, but at least I'll get to watch a few of em from home.
  21. Revival was in a Red Lobster commercial. "People can you feel it, lobster everywhere." I shit you not.
  22. Doesn't he mix Monkey Man and Mannish Boy into that scene, possibly other tunes? The coke paranoia is palpable.
  23. You just made the list. I'll miss Butch on those big old kettle drums at the end of Allmans sets. That was always a highlight. Remember him talking about the chronic pain he dealt with, and hope he is free from that pain and any other demons now. The road goes on forever...
  24. Don't recall Pig on the train, but think I remember reading about him jamming in the blues car with Buddy Guy.
