  1. I saw this one many years ago. I felt like watching it again last night. It's probably one of my favorite Buscemi films.
  2. I believe Guided by Voices were from there for what it's worth.
  3. Definitely an under-appreciated songwriter. I love just about everything he's done barring a few exceptions. This is high up the list of anticipated releases for me .
  4. I really like "Either Way," and even understand it being chosen to be played. They've done rockier songs in the past on the various talk shows and lord knows they probably didn't help boost record sales. It couldn't hurt to take a different approach this time, especially with the VW recognition factor. As for the performance, I found it a bit stiff. Maybe they were a bit nervous 'cause it was anything but loose. It was a workmanlike performance, just nothing special.
  5. Absolutely. Ugetsu has to be one of the best films I've ever seen. Sansho the Bailiff is another favorite.
  6. Great movie from one of my favorite Japanese filmmakers. Ozu is right up there with Kurosawa as far as I'm concerned.
  7. There's a few I'm looking forward to: Bettye Lavette - The Scene of the Crime Vashti Bunyan - Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind - rare tracks 1964-67 Neil Young - Chrome Dreams II The Wrens - tba... late 2007 Robyn Hitchcock - I Wanna Go Backwards The Weakerthans - Reunion Tour Steve Earle - Washington Square Serenade Joni Mitchell - Shine (first album of new material in 9 years) Vic Chesnutt - North Star Deserter Kevin Drew - Spirit If
  8. A couple of my favorites too. I've seen them both a few times and never tire of them. I also watched this one last night: I couldn't really get into it for the first 10 minutes or so, but eventually I warmed to its b-movie charm. The dialog and acting wasn't always great, and some of the racing scenes are a little too obviously sped up, but it is a pretty good satire of North American culture, particularly its love of violence and celebrity. I believe this was the film that Stallone did just before Rocky. What a difference a year can make .
  9. Last night: One of Hackman's best films, Copolla too for that matter. Today: I do love those mid period Hitchcock films.
  10. I loved this one right out of the gate. It's nice to hear this band stretch their musical palette, producing a more varied and eclectic set of songs than any of their previous releases. It's definitely one of my favorites of the year so far.
  11. I haven't really got into Peace, Love and Anarchy as much as I'd hoped. I think I was really expecting some rare gems. There's some good songs but a lot of them seem like throwaways. I'll have to give it another listen and see if it grows on me more. I haven't come across that Moondawg set you mention. I probably have about 25-30 Todd live shows though. It was the live bootlegs that first turned me into a big fan. Now I just have to find Step Right Up and Viva Satellite as these are the only studio discs I don't have. I've seen them on Amazon but they were selling for $30-80, mainly u
  12. I would definitely recommend getting your hands on any live bootlegs, or the live disc near truths and hotel rooms next. Though Todd has released some good studio work, it is in a live setting that he seems to really excel (like Loudon Wainwright III) as you get to hear his great songs along with his often funny stories and banter. As for the studio work, they all have their gems on them. Of the stuff still available on CD, you can't go wrong with any of these: east nashville skyline, The Devil You Know, New Connection, or Happy to Be Here.
  13. Good album. Then again, I love most of Todd's work. NP: Definitely one of a small handful of CD's I revisit more than any other in my collection.
  14. I've seen a few Gould documentaries over the years but never got around to seeing this film. The film doesn't reveal too much new info about Gould that I haven't already seen or read, but it does present its various anecdotes in an interesting, and nonlinear fashion over the course of these 32 vignettes.
  15. ^^ I do love Truffaut's films in general. The ending of that film is beautifully shot with the falling snow and all. I saw Super Bad with the girlfriend earlier. Now it's time for something a bit more intellectual .
  16. I'm sure I'll see this eventually though I doubt it will eclipse Cocksucker Blues, Ladies and Gentlemen... The Rolling Stones, or Gimme Shelter as far as Stones documentary/concert films go.
  17. Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different
  18. I'm a big Linklater fan too. Loved both Before Sunrise/Sunset can't wait for the third installment [crosses fingers] ...Plow was an interesting, quite minimalistic film. There's no real plot, but it does touch on themes of alienation, ennui, and communication (or lack thereof). A lot of the film focuses on seemingly mundane aspects of human existence which was an interesting approach. Of course the lack of budget, using Super-8 cameras, and the fact that Linklater did most everything in the film also adds to the unique look and feel of the film. I haven't seen that short-doc you mentio
  19. First time seeing this one in many years. The bonus disc has Linklater's earlier film It's Impossible to Learn to Plow By Reading Books which is an interesting adjunct to Slacker.
  20. MILLER: "I do my best thinking on the bus. That's how come I don't drive, see?" OTTO: "You don't even know how to drive." MILLER: "I don't wanna know how. I don't wanna learn. See? The more you drive, the less intelligent you are.
  21. I don't think this is their best record, but it is not nearly as bad as I was led to believe by all the harsh criticisms I've read. To me this is a fun pop record with a liberal injection of 70's dance and soul. Lyrically it is lighter than previous efforts, but buoyant music like this usually doesn't carry the weight of the world in it's words; it's more about the hooks, melodies and grooves. The next one will probably return to more introspective and worldly concerns, until then, I'll enjoy this one for what it is, a good time summer record; nothing more, nothing less.
  22. After watching another Errol Morris film it was on to early Cronenberg. Cheap as hell but not without its charms.
  23. There's something about the sound of this guys records that I've always dug.
