  1. Hey I'm a marketing guy. I get it, but I still will continue to plead for more mature dialogue. There's too much at stake. "The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter." - Winston Churchill
  2. Well I don't agree with that. If the ball player can get that much, then why shouldn't he/she? I think your issue is more with where our society places it value. But if you make $10M/year, you should feel privileged to do so and realize that YOU can afford to pay more for the infrastructure that is necessary for the society -- the society that allowed you to BECOME rich -- needs. The idea that Shaq -- or anyone that makes a shit ton of money -- si going to stop working because they pay 35% instead of 25% is bullshit. The tax rate does NOT create disincentives in that way.
  3. Anyone else feel like these discussions would be more productive if BOTH sides didn't use the party marketing? Whenever someone -- again from either side -- makes nuanced points, the other side throws out simplistic catch-phrases designed to scare the lowest common denominator. I think the level of intelligence on this board should allow us to rise above that.
  4. I don't read it that way at all. I'm in the camp that would pay more under Obama's plan, but the past eight years have shown, IMO, that a global economy such that it is cannot sustain the trickle down policies of Reaganomics (if they ever could). I would love to see government spend less, but we are in too big of a hole to simply spend less so our revenue needs to come from someplace (preferably not China) and I think those that can afford it should pay it. To me, that's country first. The GOP talking points will call it redistribution of wealth, socialism and giving hard-working folks' money
  5. Anywho.... RCP just moved FL into the Obama column with a 5 pt lead. That brings his electoral total at that site to 304 without toss-ups. FiveThirtyEight has Obama at 351 electoral votes. Electoral-Vote has Obama at 346.
  6. Exactly. I mean if the answers to things like the quagmire in the middle east or how to deal with the ailing economy were clear cut, there would be no debate and we'd just fix the problems. The issues of the day are complex and I, for one, am interested in hearing the differing opinions while keeping an open mind that I -- nor the candidate I support -- may just not have ALL the answers (shocking!). And I'm absolutely positive that my candidate isn't right because the majority of fans of a certain band support him. I would like to hear dialogue about how McCain's positions are better for the c
  7. Huh, I have a widget on my Google home page from the BCS (supposedly official) and it says Oct. 12. They must have changed the date and forgot to update their widget.
  8. First BCS rankings are released today.
  9. Agreed. As I've said many times, lyrics don't really figure into the equation for me unless the music is great first. If the music was any good, I wouldn't ming that the lyrics are trite.
  10. Creationist outs his $7.5 Trillion where his mouth is
  11. Well playing the market is gambling, pure and simple. there are never guarantees. But if you buy now and it goes down even further, you can kick yourself or realize that rarely does anyone buy at the absolute low. If you think we're headed for Lord of Flies, then sure, get out altogether. I don't and think there are bargains to be had. After all this, the DJIA is still 1200 pts above where it was post-9/11. Make no mistake, this is a historic collapse, but if you have confidence it will eventually recover, there are bargains.
  12. Right. Who was it that said (may be paraphrasing), "only a fool thinks he can buy at the low and sell at the high." To continue using AAPL, it could lose all today's gains on Monday, but chances are, in the long-term, quality stocks are being sold in a panic and are currently a bargain -- even if you lose a bit in the short-term. ETA: there was high volume today ... could be an indicator we are near the bottom.
  13. Well I think his point is still sound. Time to look for bargains. For eg, if you had bought AAPL before the bell today, you'd be a happy camper.
  14. Wayne creates the image that is the FLips, but it is Steven that creates the awesome music! As Gibby Haynes said when asked “What is Wayne’s biggest asset?” he replied, “Steven.”
  15. I agree with this if you can buy back in at a bargain (like now). Most people won't/can't pay that close attention though. Well-managed mutual funds are probably the best way for most folks to do what you did.
  16. "I just have to rely on the good judgment of the voters not to buy into these negative attack ads. Sooner or later, people are going to figure out if all you run is negative attack ads you don't have much of a vision for the future or you're not ready to articulate it." - John McCain, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, 2/21/2000
  17. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave! Now that's some good lyrics! Ha!
  18. I find it completely intolerable and amongst the most trite lyrics I've ever heard... not just from Tweedy. But you;re right... to each his own!
  19. If we're looking at early '80s shows, here's a good one in honor of Halloween coming up: 10/31/83 (Mon) Marin County Veterans Auditorium - San Rafael, CA Set 1: Wang Dang Doodle > My Brother Esau, Peggy-O, Little Red Rooster, Brown Eyed Women, Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance > Deal Set 2: Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower, Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World > Drums > St. Stephen > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away, E: Revolution I always really liked Esau and though it was too bad when Bobby dropped it.
