Good advice! My favorite is Soft Bulletin hands down. Yoshimi is next. In my opinion, At War With Mystics gets a bad rap because it is not as good as those two, but it is still a great album and my choice for #3 spot. Clouds and Transmissions round out the top 5. There is some good stuff on Zaireeka too, but I would suggest finding one of the "bootlegged" pre-mixed versions that float around. The four CD version is just not feasible for most. There are some pre-mixed Zaireeka tracks on the Soft Bulletin Companion too.

(pssst...it's just a joke)

I apologize if this has been posted but wading through this thread is difficult to say the least. Makes Edwards' haircut look like a bargain!

Perhaps you haven't seen Orkie's other commentary. Take a look at his thoughts on alt-country. Don't you all know that until everyone's musical tastes trend EXACTLY the same way, we will never truly achieve eternal bliss!?! Oh yeah, and your favorite band sucks!

This is the pumpkin I carved last year. I chose the scariest subject i could think of: Dick Cheney!

Thanks everyone!

Seriously!?! I mean I can understand the criticism lyrically (and I can even understand some backlash for their success), but how can anyone say The Bends and Kid A are even in the same ballpark musically, let alone "one tone"?

That was the only post-Jerry line-up (P&F, Ratdog, The Dead, tOOs) I thought was any good. I am an unapologetic Jerry fan though and have a hard time appreciating hearing anyone play that music without him.

Well that makes more sense, I guess. I have stated time and again that i am a music-oriented person and lyrics rarely move me. I happen to find Radiohead's music infinitely more interesting than Berman's, but that's MY opinion. The thing with music is it is totally subjective. There are a lot of people who love Radiohead. That may be a head scratcher for some, but it is what it is. How can you tell someone that they are wrong to like the art and/or entertainment that they like. And many more like Radiohead's brand of art/entertainment than Berman's, hence they are labeled as the most important

I think I've posted about here before, but I've heard (but no longer own) the monitor mix for the Deer Creek show where there had been a death threat against Jerry. It is definitely interesting to hear the banter and dark humor amongst the band members. I don't recall any cues during the jams though.

May be a stretch, but Jim O'Rourke's Ghost Ship in a Storm has been getting under my skin recently. -

Well of course. All I said was that it was interesting. Folks like my dad think electing a Dem will stagnate the economy. This shows that at the very least, there is no direct causation between a Democratic President and a stagnating economy.
-
Well we disagree I guess. I think your ideal is just that: an ideal. I don't believe it is possible and that is the point of this thread.
-
For those that think the Dems make it more difficult to accumulate wealth, here is an interesting study (excuse the "liberal media" source).

Well this is really the root of it, no? I agree with everything you posted here if the world existed in a vacuum. But we can't just NOT regulate. If we leave the market completely to its own devices, bad people will do bad things. Again, see the current economic crisis for all the proof you need. I'd love to adopt the Ron Paul approach and say, screw the financial industry, they got themselves into this and now they're paying the price. Except it isn't just them that would pay the price. It isn't just them that are paying the price. So, we can either suffer the consequences which would surely

I didn't say that. I said the ideals of free market economics resonate with me as I consider myself fiscally conservative. But I find that pure free markets truly don't exist and are unworkable (see current crisis). That is not to say that there aren't still many tenets of fiscal conservatism I feel are workable, it's just that the pure idealized version is fallacy, IMO.

I tried to make this argument repeatedly about 30 pages ago, but lost interest.

Last night my fiance and I were talking about an amendment on the ballot here in CO (amendment 47). Now the argument against this amendment is that individual workers should have the right to choose whether or not they support their union and whether or not they wish to pay dues. Ideologically, I agree that an individual should have this right. But, having lived and worked in a "right to work" prior to being a college graduate, I realized that workers have far less leverage and opportunity. It is difficult for me to reconcile my ideology with my practical knowledge. Likewise, I see debate abou
