Give me a break. Those who call out conformists, are usually conformists themselves. If you strive to be a nonconformist, you are conforming to non-conformity.

Yeah, annoying or not, anything to raise awareness for that horrible disease is a good thing. My father was challenged by his cousin, he has accepted (and will still donate). Then he's going to challenge my oldest son.. Should be a hoot.

Well yeah, that's what I meant by having at least a decent rig. But having tone-envy, and obsessing about one's current tone, one must not forget that much of the tone is in the player. Although I'm sure David Gilmour could make an imitation Yamaha strat ran through a Crate sing like a bird...

Haha nah, I'm saying we as musicians are the problem.. Never being quite happy with your sound is a sign of a good musician. Always striving to sound better, never truly satisfied. As long as you aren't playing out of a Peavey bandit, and one of those shitty plastic ibanez distortion pedals from the 90's, then chances are you have a good tone.. The rest comes from the player.

How do you feel about musicians reading lyrics on stage?
lamradio replied to lamradio's topic in Solid State Technology
Well said, and I couldn't agree more. This show is for my cover song, money making band.. I also have an original material band, and I wouldn't be caught dead reading lyrics on stage for them.. I've never had a problem remembering lyrics for songs I have written. I guess because you write them down, commit to memory, sing them over and over and over.. I can remember lyrics to songs I wrote 20 years ago when I was a kid. Now if I were a 70 something Bob Dylan, trying to remember lyrics to songs I wrote 50 years ago, that's a different story.. -

I know, I'm just poking fun. I also hate the Sons Of Anarchy theme song, but I worship that show. -
I would agree, except for Why Would You Wanna Live.. That's really the only song on Being There that I don't like. That and maybe Dreamer in My Dreams, which has always seemed like "oops, didn't realize we left the record button on when we were goofing off.. Fuck it.. Let's put it on the record anyway!".. Sorry getting off topic here..

I can't get past the terrible theme song to be able to watch this show.. -
Nice. I'm sure a lot of folks can relate to that.. Every office has a sandwich thief.

Clinical, good word. We do some stuff juke-box style, but most of the tunes, we do our own versions.. So that leaves even more room for lyrical variations (fuck ups). I won't be burying my head.. Just occasional reference.. And google glass.. If they come in black wayfarers, I'm sold! -

Well you commented, so you are still a part of it! We all love being a part of things! -
The tone is in the player. I always refer back to the story of a roadie that got to play Eddie Van Halen's rig on stage one time before a show. He said it sounded/felt terrible. Then Eddie picked it up and made it scream..

Yeah, I know there's nothing they can do about it.. But it still sucks. I'm just glad I was able to find the charter school for my son, and it works out logistically that I can take him there/pick him up. Other parents aren't so fortunate.. The artists get shit on the worse in public school, and it's a damn shame.. Artists typically come with learning disabilities like ADD, language disorders etc, because the part of their brains used for academics is all used for the artistic side of their brains. They need something they are interested in (like art, music etc.) to help them focus on t

Well based on the results of this poll thus far, 67.67% of the world's population, roughly 46,669,000 people, really could care less if I read lyrics at my gig next week. Great! -

I don't know, he's been sketching out a lot lately. "Forgot that I had plans that weekend", excuses like that.. We're already auditioning a replacement.. It sucks because he's been with the band for like 15 years, one of the founding members. Drummers and lead singers are always flakey.. -
One of my kids is attending an "alternative school" as well this year. We got fed up with his public school not offering art or music classes, when art is his life (just like his father).

Thanks for your feedback. I agree, there's a big difference between occasionally referencing lyrics, and reading them line by line, having your head buried in them. I'll just be referencing, so I think it'll be ok. I've seen artists forget lyrics many times... Glenn Frey skipped an entire verse of "Take It Easy" when I saw the Eagles in 94.. I know Tweedy has done it. And I bet they wish they had a reference to bail them out. The other members can't always step in there, because in my experience, lyrical brain farts are contagious on stage... -
I was just listening to a live version of "Red House" yesterday from the Miami Pop Festival. To your casual listener, it's just another blues guitar song.. But there's just something special about Jimmi's playing that no one could ever match.. The way he would bend notes and just his overall feel.. Nothing like it..

Then I think the appropriate choice would be "could care less either way". "Don't mind at all' is for the people that want to express their feelings that they really don't mind it. "Could care less either way" is for the people that really could care less, and don't really want to express their feelings about it, but still want to vote. People that like to be a part of things! -
Personally, I have never cared. I have seen artists do it, and haven't thought twice about it.. However, I know many people frown upon it.. "Why would I pay money to see someone that is essentially cheating?".. etc.. Reason I ask is that the lead singer in my band backed out of a big show we have coming up, so I am on lead vocals.. There are about 20 songs that I need to learn in a week.. Not going to happen.. So I'm going to need to read from a song book.. Hopefully one that is out of view.
