Yeah, heard Thax moved/drifted up to Wisconsin some years back. He pops up every now and then, usually with acts exactly like The Wacos.

Jon said he was living in Whitewater WI.

BTW the Waco Brothers put on a great show.

  2. Anyone remember Thax Douglas?  He used to do poems before Wilco shows in Chicago?

well apparently he is still kicking. Just saw him do a poem before The Waco Brothers in Madison.

I don't know anything more than the next Wilco nerd, but when Jeff talks on his Substack about how their archivist (Cheryl Pawelski who curated the YHF reissue) has been hanging around the Loft with him, you know they're getting ready to shake loose some recording you've never heard. AGIB 20 Year is being prepped.

    That's my prediction at least.

  4. Raising my hand on Jeff’s vocals. I really started to notice it on his solo stuff. It is a weird whisper thing that is dare I say borderline annoying. It is frustrating cause the lyrics are top notch and live it sounds great.

As for the EP it is always good to get new music. Livid is my early stand out and I wish was another minute or so longer, the idea just gets going and stops. Whereas Inside The Bell Bones should be 30 seconds shorter.

Ice Cream is a meh, but Say I Love You is great and works with Jeff’s current vocal style. I like the strings in that one.

annihilation needs an editor. I am for weird guitar parts but they need to have purpose. I am not sure the purpose.

And hot sun, did Jeff just wake up?  But you know who is there and awake for the song, John. The bass part is great. Also at a quick listen it sounds like Wilco are tying to do the Cure.

Just first thoughts on the EP. Good not great. I am unsure how often I will revisit.

  5. I listened to it and have been listening to the Podcast in general.  It is Seth Meyers and his brother, Josh, talking to various guests about the family trips they took.  It is interesting.  The Jeff Tweedy one was good, as Jeff is a natural storyteller and Seth is a good interviewer.  The Duck Boat bit was about a trip he took to the Wisconsin Dells with his family (Sue, Spencer and Sam).  He doesn't go into too much detail about the Duck Boat, but he does say they went to the Water Parks there.  Which is amusing to me to think of Jeff going down a water slide.

Also he Jeff did the theme song to the podcast.  It is worth a listen.

  6. No one is talking about Tweedy on Cobert from a couple of nights ago?

Also apparently Jeff is taking some heat for saying he doesn't like "I will always love you"  I have seen People Magazine and the like throw out articles that people comment on after only reading the headlines.  Because the internet.  Sigh.

  7. Never started one of these before and always relied on the kindness of strangers for the a recap, but I may have been the only VC'er at the show.  I am not the greatest at remembering the show and the full details, so bear with me.  Something is better than nothing, I suppose.

Anyway, a fun, light and breezy show, outside of the book tour.  A pretty standard Jeff Tweedy performance with the witty banter one would expect. My buddy and I remarked, after the show, seeing Jeff these days is like putting on a comfortable sweater, it feels nice, warm and just makes you happy.  Playing only an acoustic guitar in a small old 400 seat theater it felt very intimate.  For those that don't know Stoughton WI is a small, sleepy suburb of Madison WI with a population of about 13,000.  Stoughton is also very obsessed with its Norwegian Heritage.  The theatre has been in operation since 1901 and  in recent years has been getting in some pretty large National acts (Bob Mould, Jayhawks, Leo Kottke, Aimee Mann, etc.).  They recently got cushion's on the seats, which is an improvement to the hard metal seats they had previously.  This lead to some fun interactions between Jeff and the crowd.  Jeff wore his standard black jeans, black jacket (which he remarked he'd been wearing for the past week and only smells when it is activated by heat) and stocking cap.  He looked good and happy.  The director of the Stoughton Opera came introduce Jeff telling the story of how he got the email on a pontoon boat in northern WI with just one bar of service and hitting reply holding the phone high in the air hoping it would go through.

The show was a tight 90 minutes (21 Songs) focusing on some solo stuff (which he said he doesn't really get to play live), stuff from Cruel Country and stuff from what my friend called "mid-career Wilco, that no one really knows."  Not that I agree, but that is what he said.  Notably missing was anything from Cousin, which I suppose might be hard to translate to the setting.  Highlights for me were Ruling Class, Please Tell My Brothers, Lou Reed Was my Babysitter and Hummingbird (which is the song I want to be played at my funeral).  The crowd interaction was good, better than a lot of the Madison shows I have been too.  There was a lot of whistling and Jeff remarked how he was gonna whistle a verse in every song.  He did not, because as much as I like whistling, Jeff is no Andrew Bird.  There was some people yelling stuff trying to get Jeff to interact, which he did politely and used some of it to make some fun insights.  Of course there is this one guy who has been at every Tweedy show I have been to in the Madison area who thinks it is job to be Jeff's prompt.  He will yell stuff, song titles, just general randomness at Jeff.  This guy was at the show last night.  Jeff didn't really interact with him, so he quieted down and made him slightly less insufferable.  There was no "encore" per se.  Jeff mentioned that normally he would stand off to the side and have people cheer until he came back and that was silly cause he wanted to bask in the cheers while he was on stage.  The crowd obviously obliged.

All in all a good fun show.  He plays again tonight (11/13) at the Stoughton Opera House, but unfortunately I will not be in attendance.

It just occurred to me that they will probably send out a download by Friday to those of us who have purchased it, so I can burn that onto a CD and have that to listen to assuming the actual CD hasn't arrived. I forgot that's what I did with Cruel Country since there was no physical release (and, in that case, they sent the downloads about a week in advance of the release date since the release date was the first day of Solid Sound).

I assume Friday it will be available on all the streaming services, no?
