  1. That may prove to be true, but it's a party primary. If the majority of primary voters want Sanders, he's the nominee. I want Trump gone 3 years ago, but trying to get Democrats to vote for a candidate deemed "most likely to beat Trump" (meaning most likely a Republican will vote for in the general election), is a fool's errand. Just as voters in the general vote for who they want to be president, voters in a primary do the same. "Uh, gee, people are saying that Democrat X is the most electable in the general. I want Trump out, I'll vote for them instead of the candidate I prefer to be president." It's just silly. Vote for who you prefer in the primary and for the Democratic nominee in the general (if you want Trump out). As long as idiot assholes don't vote for a 3rd party candidate, instead of the Dem. (or sit it out), as many did in 2016, I  believe we'll prevail. I could be wrong, but that's all there is.

I have heard from my progressive friends that it appears that if Bernie is not the nominee (especially due to some "Super-delegate" trickery), they are willing to sit home again in an effort to have the Democratic Party burn to the ground.

Also there will be no way you will have two far left politicians on a ticket.  Bernie is going to be saddled with the Socialist tag.  He will need someone to even him out.  Pete Buttiege is really angling himself for a VP slot.

  2. Yes.  If he were a Republican, he'd still be in office.

If he were a Republican he might be a nominee for the 2024 election.

Also Iowa, way to show the Democrats have a strong handle on the election and showing there will be no problems with the general.

    What a shit show.

  3. I suggest anyone who is interested in this issue read the commissioner's report:

    https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-images/image/upload/mlb/cglrhmlrwwbkacty27l7.pdf

There is nothing "grand" about what the Astros (and apparently the Red Sox) did.  All teams were specifically warned by the Commissioner's office about this type of cheating prior to the 2017 season (after the Red Sox and Yankees were caught using Apple watches to relay information about stolen signs).  The Astros (and apparently the Red Sox) ignored the warnings and failed to implement a culture which discourages cheating. I thought the penalties were severe and deserved --  the maximum fine allowed ($5M), losing their manager and general manager for a year (they were both immediately fired) and forfeiting four draft choices.  If MLB's investigation reveals that the Red Sox engaged in similar conduct, I expect the punishment to be even more severe.  They would be recidivists. Alex Cora could be banned for life.   I think these penalties send the appropriate message to other teams and [hopefully] should serve as a deterrent.

When there are potentially billions of dollars involved people will try to do whatever.  Look at the players who use steroids.  It is illegal, it damages their health, and can get them banned from the game.  Yet every year there is a person who gets busted for it.  It all comes down to dollars.  The culture that encourages cheating is capitalism.  Simple as that.  And there is nothing MLB can do to stop it.  If it is not stealing signs, it will be something else.  This is the society we live in.

It also appears that Carlos Beltran is now out as manager of the Mets because of this.

  4. This kind of speaks to recent points you guys are making:

It's interesting to me that the scramble to support the assassination of Soleimani has only gotten messier and they haven't really put up anything to back their decision..... annnnd it seems like the media and the public has all but moved on in a week.

Can a President be impeached multiple times?  Asking for a friend.

  5. This baseball cheating scandal is weird.  I get the punishment but it's interesting that it's GMs and managers who are the focus and not any players.  And it's too bad - I like Alex Cora but he had to go.

My dad has always said it is easier to fire the manager then it is to fire the whole team.  Which I think is the case here.  If you were to punish the players, it would have to be in the way of fines or suspensions, but trying to figure out who knew what and at what time I think would be extremely difficult.

A world series championship likely brings in 100s of millions of dollars (billions maybe) to a club.  Not only during that season, but merchandise, increase ticket sales in the future, new TV contracts, etc.  So when we start talking money that large you will see people trying to get every advantage and yes even cheat.  I highly doubt that cheating occurs all the time in baseball.  The Astros and the Red Sox are not the only ones, they are the only ones to get caught.  Teams will continue to cheat, it is a fact of the game.  The punishments really will not do anything to curb the ongoing cheating.

I love baseball, I love the game in all its aspects.  Sign stealing is honestly a grand tradition of the game.  I was honestly impressed with the system that the Astros came up with.  Would I rather it not be done, of course, but my point is it will continue, unless of course MLB comes up with a nuclear type of option.

  6. They're very good at getting things that would blow up in anyone else's faces, and derail entire presidencies to NOT blow up in their own faces, and be seen as just more of the same.

Remember when misspelling potato pretty much derailed not only the political career of one man, but an entire administration?

  7. What's there to discuss?

The two sides sound as if they are talking about two separate things. The Senate will acquit. Our only hope is the election. This era has been soul crushing.

Has there ever been a moment in history that has felt so mundane.  We all know how this will play out.  My fear is that POTUS 45 will be emboldened to do more audacious things.

Regardless of what you think about POTUS 45 the one thing he has done is eschewed the norms of politics.  He has done and said things that have completely torpedoed other politicians.  Is this just a blip on the radar or will this outlast him as a president?  10, 25, 50, 100 years historians will look back and see this very moment as a turning point in our country, and yet for a majority of Americans it is the battle of who care less.

  8. So was Bolton fired or did he quit? What a shit-show ...

Shortly after the election in 2016 I was talking to co-worker.  He said, "It won't be that bad.  Trump is known for hiring good people.  So there will be good people around him to help him make decisions."  Every time someone is fired or does something extremely stupid in the Trump administration I remind him of this.

  9. Hillary isn't running this year.  And the "Bernie Bro" movement was egged on by Russian trolls.  No need to revisit 2016 again.

But Joe Biden is.  He is Democratic Establishment's choice, basically the same roll that Hillary was in 2020.  I have already heard talk (non Russian trolls btw) that Millennials (aka Bernie Bros) will sit out if Joe gets the nod.  So yeah, the Bernie Bros would rather burn it all down if they don't get their way.

  10. And Ol' Mitch McConnell is actively blocking legislation to protect our elections. Then to deflect criticism as McCarthyism? WHAT? Everything is upside down when the GOP goes soft on Russia and then calls people McCarthyists for calling them out. Ronald Reagan's ghost is hopefully haunting McConnell every night.

It is funny, when Hillary Clinton said she was under fire when she landed in Bosnia it nearly (and to some extent did) torpedo her political life.

Now Trump when claims he was down helping first responders after 9/11, it gets little mention, maybe a few memes, but again nothing comes of it.

We live in a post truth world.  I know that politicians lie and stretch the truth, but I don't think there has ever been one that has done it so blatantly and with such frequency as Trump.  And the thing is, no one really cares anymore.

  11. The Russians have always been interfering in out elections - or at least trying to - as has been every other rival foreign power.  Been going on as long as there have been elections.  This is nothing new.

Oh ok, so we should let them go ahead and continue and fight between ourselves pointing fingers?  Every post about the Muller report here is who it was good for Trump or the Dems.  My contention is, sure the Russians may have meddled in the past, but in 2016 and 2018 we have verified proof  This is a thing that happened, we know it happened.  This is a big f ing deal.  We have an election in about 15 months.  We have zero plan on how to stop this or preventing it.  Russia has received no consequences for doing this.  But hey, lets all Monday morning QB this bullshit and see whose side it was better for.

  12. So the Mueller Testimony.  I don't think we learned much, but it was interesting to understand some the reasoning and thoughts.

What worries me through this whole thing is this.  It has been proven by Mueller and many others that the Russians tried and successfully interfered with our election in 2016.  Whether there was a coordinated effort or collusion and by whom is a matter of interpretation and opinion.  While congress, the media and the American public seemingly want to point fingers and blame each other.  But the long and short of it a foreign entity meddled in our election.  This is beyond troubling and because of need to blame and deflect we have done nothing to stop it from happening again.

It is clear that there is a winner in this, it is Vlad.

  13. i realize that i am quoting a fairly old post, but regardless of what Trump says/tweets/does, he can't hang himself due to the depressingly large amount of Americans who are OK w/ his indirect or flagrant racism.

Trump is a racist, he has always been a racist.  This is nothing new.  The media certainly will not call him out on it.  Politicians won't call him out on it.  The MAGA crowd never cared and support his racist policies.  But he is hanging himself, albeit slowly.  His support with white women is eroding.  Mainly due to his boorish behavior.  I say boorish, because the racism does not bother people en masse, if he were more eloquent about it, ala Ronald Reagan, it would be a different story.

He knows what he is doing, I firmly believe this calling out of these congress women was very calculated.  He used language that is on the razors edge of racism.  Is it racist, absolutely.  Can you parse and twist the words so it is not, yes.  This is a distraction.  We forgot about Epstein, Pence's trip to the detention facilities, and remember Robert Mueller is set to testify on July 24.

  14. Iowan here, so I matter more than most of you. Here's my current ranking:

It is absolute garbage that a small midwestern state that is 90% white with 6 electoral college has this much sway in presidential politics.

  15. McConnell wouldn’t be running the Senate trial, it would be Roberts. And even though I agree that there’s no way that they would vote to convict, I think a trial would bring the findings of the Mueller report to life much in the way his 10 minute speech yesterday did. There’s a huge difference between watching someone of Mueller’s stature say something and reading the words in a report (especially since nobody reads things anymore). And when GOP senators stick up for Trump and try to attack him, that’s only going to hurt them.

Let’s not also forget how batshit crazy this would make Trump. His twitter feed would be full of rants and personal attacks against whoever is testifying against him. While that wouldn’t hurt (and likely would help) him with his base, polling shows us that it turns off everyone else.

But most importantly, I think Congress must act because it’s their fucking job. If they let this behavior go unchecked then what’s stopping the next president from committing crimes in office, knowing that they can’t be charged and won’t be held accountable? Sometimes you have to do the right thing, even if you think it’s politically risky (which I don’t think it is).

Roberts would be the judge, but I do believe the Senate itself actually sets up the prosecution, etc. Which ultimately falls to McConnell as majority leader. Also the Senate preceedings are held in close door sessions. So we'd get the house version of events, but not hear anything about what the Senate does.

And there is no doubt Trump would go Bat-shit. I for one am worried about that. Not the twitter machine, but the fact he will have control of the US Military. I don't put it past him to start a war or whatnot.

Oversight is their job, I am not saying they should still investigate, hold hearings etc. But impeachment would ultimately accomplished nothing. It will not change anything. So why waste the time on it?
