  1. The slide into 2nd by Butera, for one obvious one. Even the replay shows he was safe.

So you think there was some conspiracy to give the cubs the win?   :rolleyes

I felt the calls were fairly decent across the board.  Not all perfect, but consistent.  Which is what you desire in a game.

    Maddon should stick around, too.

calls for Maddon to lose his job are down right silly.  Anyone who thinks that did not see the Cubs this season and what they actually overcame.

  2.

Oh, and can you please predict a Cubs win for tonight? ;)

The Rockies are gonna have a hard go of it tonight.  Of course the Cubs bats are a mystery to me.  They could score one run or 14.  If they just got consistent run production they would be unstoppable.  Kinda like the team to the North.

  3. Hopefully you'll be 50% correct at this point. Tough pitching the Cubs faced from the 6th on today. Home from work sick and enjoying these tie-breakers.

    Yeah not even 50%

Man the Brewers looked awfully good. Yelich is hands down the MVP and the 12 year old that they have managing them is you NL manager of the year.

  4. If the universe is kind we'll see the Rox and the Brewers emerge victorious.

That is a funny way to spell Cubs.

But what a day for baseball. Too bad the Cubs v Brewers is at noon.

Prediction the Cubs and Rockies will win tomorrow.

  5. How is this vote going to go down tomorrow? None of my usual media sources are dumb enough to say they know.

Are there any Republicans that don't want to go down as the party of Roy Moore?

The committee will vote to confirm tomorrow. He will be the next Supreme Court Justice by the middle of next week.

  6. I sat in the balcony and was extremely worried when the drunk woman behind me kept screaming Jeff Tweedy during the break.  She was the woman who actually prompted the "I'm not ready to talk to yet" line.  Luckily she calmed down and was quite for most of the show.

It is true Madison Tweedy shows tend to be more rowdy and causal then other places I have seen Jeff.  Which is not a bad thing.  Jeff really plays the crowd well and did is expertly last night.  He will engage with them at the right moments and playful chastise them enough so that show goes on in the manner he wants.  Other than my nervousness in the beginning I never felt the show was going to go sideways.  After years of touring, he played the crowd as well as he played his guitar.  Jeff reminded me of the cool uncle who is babysitting and lets the kids get away with just enough, but still gets them to bed on time with their teeth brushed.

With that being said, the new songs sound great and I am interested to hear what they will sound like as finished pieces.  For the first time seeing Jeff solo (which have a dozen or so times), I really missed the band, especially Nels in Impossible Germany.  His solo in that song has always been a highlight, I am not sure what I expected, but I was kinda disappointed.

I noticed he had a harmonica set up on a little table but never played it.  Which makes me wonder how much of the setlist is in flux and changes based upon the audience.  During the I am not ready to talk to you bit, he did say something about he only has 2 happy song and he already played one.  Also the line about playing more songs about murder (shortly after Bull Black Nova), because they are all about murder now was amusing too.  All in all a serviceable show.  Not great, but fun and I had a good time.

As a side note, anyone remember seeing Wilco in the late 90s early 2000s and would count the "Nothings" in Misunderstood and then checking to see if you got what everyone else did on here on VC.  I found myself absent mindlessly sounting last night. I got 10.

  7. The White Sox have been been playing pretty great since the break -- this is a huge blow.

The human arm is not meant to throw a ball that fast.  He was bound to break down, but I did not think it would be this soon.

  8. I hope the author does the right thing and step up, reveal who he/she is and resign. Otherwise he/she continues to be an enabler of chaos and destruction.

If POTUS is as bad as the author says, they cabinet should do more then just wisper about the 25th amendment, they should do it. Twarting clearly is not enough. Also they should come forward and produce tapes or actual hard evidence. BTW remember when Omorosa had tapes of POTUS saying some awful stuff. Yeah ain't happing. Either someone got to her or it is just BS.

Things like this article just play to both sides. I would love to see some actual hard evidence

  9. That piece has problems.

"despite hacked voting machines and gerrymandering - that there is no known mechanism by which our government can deny massive voter turnout."

What?  Hacked voting machines are precisely how our government can deny massive turnout.  They can simply say "it didn't happen and here's the data to prove it.  Don't agree?  Let's go all the way to the supreme court."  Guess how that turns out.

"Stop pretending that the worst of what’s happening now is what is going to always happen."

Nobody thinks that.  What we do know with near certainty, however, is that much of this damage will not be corrected in our lifetimes, and that legitimately FUCKING SUCKS.  It's little comfort to know someone sometime in the future might get to experience the promises this country has made to its people.

"A time when the last bastion of white power and male supremacy and oligarchy..."

There's absolutely no reason to think we're seeing the last bastion of any of those things, and lots of evidence that all of them are only ramping up.

    _____

Having said all that, I have not rolled over or given up and I ALWAYS vote, but for the foreseeable future we are most definitely fucked.

    I couldn't agree more.

  10. We will have a new supreme Court Justice before the november elections. I guess our only hope is that Mueller comes out with some shit that seriously and credibly shows that POTUS did some really shady Russian shit.

  11. Justice Kennedy just announced his retirement. Unless the democrats can obstruct and stonewall like never before, the supreme court will be consistently hard right for the rest of our lives.

Fuck, he couldn't wait another year and half

  12. I also hate Trump, but I'm very much pro World Peace.  So if the Singapore Summit reduces the potential nuclear threat from North Korea, to me that's a good thing.  And if along the way that means giving some credit to Trump, I'll hold my nose and do it.

Sure I am for world peace and all, but this certainly is not it.  I don't trust either men.  I wouldn't be surprised this whole thing was set up behind the scenes by Russia to prop up Trump for the mid terms.  And you think, a country that is so secretive is really gonna let inspectors in their country to make sure they are not going forward with a nuclear weapons program?  Heck, you might say this could bring us closer to war, Trump can say hey look, I tried, but NK broke the deal so now wer get to bomg the shit out them (I am looking at late spring 2020).  So I am pessimistic as fuck.

  13. Live From Here (formally known as Prairie Home Companion), hosted by Chris Thile (Nickle Creek, Punch Brothers, Goat Rodeo), recorded a live taping of their show Saturday at the Raivinia Fest in the Northern suburbs of Chicago.  If you are not familiar with the show he and his band perform a instant song request, where he will pick a song suggested by twitter (a song, which they have never performed before).  This week he did a cover of I am Trying to Break Your Heart.  He also had some nice words to say about the YHF and the boys in the intro to the song.

Here is a link to the whole show, but you can click on View All Audio Clips and scroll to the cover.

As a plus (for me anyways) I was actually at the show and I can say the rest of it is amazing.  Maybe one of the best I have heard (but IMHO they are all great, and Chris Thile is fantastic.)  Also if you scroll back in the archives, Jeff has performed with the show a few weeks back.  Also last week was Neko Case, which was pretty cool.

  14. I was listening to Barney Frank's analysis on the bill that pushes back. He actually made it sound like not as dire of a situation as you might think. I'd be out of my element to try and summarize what he said, but he said while he wouldn't vote for it and increased some risks, it is the most the GOP could muster and leaves the majority of the act in tact to do what it was intended to.

Some of his statement is recapped here:

Working in the financial services industry (my company provides software for banks) the time right before the financial crisis was awesome. Banks were spending money hand over fist and when the crisis hit man did it suck. So I guess I hope the banks rolling in it lasts for another 25 years until I retire.
