Fugazi really isn't a better example though - they still made a living from their music. It was a relatively meager living, for sure, and one spent on the road for long periods of time (among other sacrifices). But I don't think those guys had to work day jobs much past the first tour. Also, I'm not sure that Ian MacKaye has ever condemned bands that didn't adhere to his concept of how to do business. I'd like to point out that the Jam do a pretty good cover of "And Your Bird Can Sing" as well. And their s/t debut is the best punk/mod/soul album ever.

Mary Lou Lord's "His Indie World" is a name dropping tour-de-force. Among my personal favorites are Naked Raygun mentioning the Adolescents on "Entrapment" and Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Roy Orbison on "Wonder Beer", and Dillinger Four referencing Otis Redding (complete with a sample) on "doublewhiskeycokenoice".
