Just arrived in the mail: (the Legacy Edition, with all the Bambu (sic.) songs included on a second disc!) Ripping it to my iTunes now, and will be giving is a first listen today. Cannot wait to hear this one with good sound. I've been getting a lot of music lately, and it's making me happy.

Really good.

Martin Newell - new EPs (and now an LP!) available for DL
PopTodd replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
Okay, listening to the new album now, and it is really good. Any fans of Martin's would do well to pick it up. Definitely has that homemade Martin sound, it sounds like the earlier Cleaners' stuff. I am loving this. EDIT: Still kicking lots of ass. -
Added you to the station. Almost didn't because you haven't had many posts around here (and I don't want to use this thread as a place for just anybody to come in and post about their band -- ironic, huh?). But it is a good tune, so I added it. Nice work.

Not a problem. I get a lot of snootiness both when I don't bump old threads, and when I do bump threads that are too old. It's all good, and I am glad to see that old thread, too.

New album just arrived in the mail! Giving it a first listen tomorrow. -
Sorry for not resurrecting a 3-year-old thread. Thought there might be some new thought on the thing since then.

Just got one of these as a gift. I never really wanted one, but now that I have it, it seems pretty cool. The lack of a touch screen makes it kinda clunky for anything having to do with the internet, but as a pure reader, I think that it'll be cool. Those of you who have one: how do you use it? What does it do well besides being a reader? Anything? You like it?

Had myself a Jameson on the rocks over the weekend. T'was nice.

As long as this is expanding to the "Southern Soul" thread, I may as well post this gem: Fredrick Knight - "I've Been Lonely for So Long" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGkECbnFTFU The whole album is pretty great. Not the same kind of gritty, emotional wallop as Carr or Redding, but some great songs, nonetheless.

This is pretty similar -- arrangement-wise -- to Dan Penn's own version (on Do-Right Man), but... that voice is what makes it super-special. Wow.

Listening to the live Dan Penn/Spooner Oldham album now. A quote from Dan Penn: "People ask me which version of 'Dark End of the Street' is my favorite. As if there is any other version than James Carr's; not even my own." I'm gonna have to get this album: And soon.

Justin Townes Earle in rehab, postpones tour
PopTodd replied to ih8music's topic in Someone Else's Song
His father is gonna kick his ass. You don't make the same mistakes that your parents did and not expect an ass whooping. Here's hoping that he gets his shit together. -
Just bought Monkey Man. I'll get From the Roots after my next paycheck (and after my birthday, when I'll probably get some birthday cash)! Thanks for the advice!
-
Oh, I'll just pick up the albums. That is, unless they are really hard to find/expensive. The Trojan reissues... thanks!

What do you think of this one? I've been wanting to get a little deeper into the Maytals' discog (after Funky Kingston and In the Dark), but don't really know where to go next. This a good one?

Mr. Rogers rules. A lot. Here he is asking a cynical Congress for funding for PBS in 1969, and getting ALL OF IT, in less than 7 minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXEuEUQIP3Q
