  1. Well, he does it at our local community theater (which has a pretty great reputation) and he loves it. Thanks to a referral from one of his directors there, he was invited to audition for the Chicago on Broadway production of Billy Elliot last week. HE GOT A CALLBACK!!! I took him for his second audition last night. At the frikkin Oriental Theater! We find out in a couple of days whether or not he gets to play the role of Billy's best friend Michael. Due to child labor laws, they need several actors to play the role, so we'll see... He had a blast at the auditions and has a great attitud
  2. Monkey Man can be slid anywhere onto any (rock/pop) mix tape ever made and sound amazing -- fit right in. Try it. Just throw it onto any (rock-based) mix that you're making and hear the magic! Love that song. I'm glad you are a monkey woman, too.
  3. Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid Of You and I Will Beat Your Ass James - Whiplash Roky Erickson - Demon Angel: A Day & Night with Roky Erickson
  4. The guy won a frikkin' PULITZER for crying out loud. His reviews are consistently entertaining reading. He put out a book with this title: Plus, he did Oprah and talks about it freely. Go Roger!!! So, let's talk about Rog in here. Because he's cool.
  5. Roy Wood & Wizzard - Archive Series Rancid - Let's Go Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation Camper Van Beethoven - Telephone-Free Landslide Victory
  6. Isn't Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown supposed to have a running narriative?
  7. I never really liked Steely Dan throughout high school and most of college. Then I found out that they got their name from a dildo mentioned in Borrough's Naked Lunch and I decided to listen closer. I realized that under that smooth sound was some terse sarcasm and a great wit. And then I started to hear that sound differently, too and how brilliantly the songs were put together. And, damn I love the Dan!!! Others that I had to come around on, and did (thanks to a couple of smokey nights): My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab
  8. Dogbowl - Flan Also... De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead (although much more loosely)
  9. Paul Simon - Rhythm Of the Saints Massive Attack - Mezzanine Songs: Ohia - The Magnolia Electric Co. Teenage Fanclub - Songs From Northern Britain Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come
  10. Motown is pop, not soul. Apples to oranges. But there is NOTHING wrong with Motown. (So, yeah. that's blasphemous.)
  11. Naw. He was on The Right Stuff Records. (I think that he had one album on Motown.) But def. not Stax. Discography
  12. David Crosby is the weak link in every band of which he has been a part.
  13. For instance... Nick Lowe always modulates to another key for the last 1/3 of the song so that he can keep hammering home the hook, without sounding too redundant.
  14. Martin Newell - A Summer Tamarind New York Dolls - New York Dolls Def Leppard - YEAH! My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves Los Lobos - Kiko
  15. I agree. But, have you heard that second album that I mentioned? It's a covers record that is beyond great. I had stopped listening to Def Leppard a long time ago, too. (You and I are about the same age.) But I heard their version of "Waterloo Sunset" while flipping stations one night, without knowing who it was. And I was blown away. That record is, very simply, a great rock band playing great songs, with a lot of love. Here's the AllMusic (4.5-star) review: :rock 1 20th Century Boy Bolan 3:40 2 Rock On Essex 2:53 3 Hanging on the Telephone Lee 2:22 4 Wate
  16. NOOOO!!!!!!! THIS: is a perfect record! And THIS: Is one of the best of the '00s. Just too much fun! And, actually, that second one goes to show that they are really not a "heavy metal" band, no matter how much they were marketed as one by the label in the 80's. They're a glam rock band, plain and simple. And, damn they're good. (Although I will get on-board with you for your hate of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and all of Hysteria, actually. Blech.)
  17. Okay... (*grows balls*) Garth Brooks damn, I hate that guy. And 2 Live Crew UGH!!!
  18. Or something. I tend not to proofread my internet message board posts too closely. It's most-likely the death of the written word as an artform, but... fuck it. Also, I am serious. I cannot think of any artist that I would want completely eliminated; I just turn off the radio or whatever.
  19. The only reason the producers of Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs left in the false starts on that record is for a cruel "let's laugh at the crazy guy" effect. Fucking makes me sick.
  20. I can't think of anyone that I'd want to eliminate. At the risk of sounding pompous, they've all added something to the cannon of popular song. Of course, I could live without ever hearing Barry Manilow ever again.
  21. Martin Scorsese gave one of the best, most gracious acceptance speeches that I have ever heard at one of these things -- especially for a lifetime achievement-type award. I did not expect that. He never came off (to me) as a particularly good or eloquent speaker in the times that I have seen him interviewed, or speak publically. Just a really pleasant surprise. I was also happy to see Robert Downey win for Sherlock Holmes. He made that movie.
