  1. do I care about the setlist?

yes, and I agree that the internet has spoiled many surprises that happen at shows-But I am truly sorry if a band has NEVER surprised you with a song or a new interpretation at its show, even if you knew 99% of the set. Pearl Jam does it often.

do I know which bands/artists mix up the set lists and those that play the same set every night?

    yes

Do I hope for a past rarity instead of a new tune?

    yes

Do I have a good time no matter what songs are played?

yes, I just love live music.

  2. As you can see earlier in this thread I was not particularly excited about Roger taking The Wall on the road again. I stubbornbly refused to get tickets, preferring to focus my money on younger artists with new material to peddle (and I have seen some great shows this year).

Well I'm regretting that now. Reading that review has me longing to be there. It brings back memories of listening to the album in the early 80's, pouring over the lyric sheet and really buying into the whole 'package'.

Some times its good to look back and revel in old music. Hell, I'm even go to see a Genesis tribute band in November!!.

    same here

    the opening sequence is insane

after seeing some of the vids, I am starting to get the bug

  5. That good ol' Mountain Dew! I know you meant Morning Dew....I hear you on preference of seeing a band in a bar over a large venue. I'll be catching JGB in the bar over YMSB and LoS at Red Rocks. The Furthur shows are brutally expensive, too. Still, I like what they're doing and will catch 'em again next month.

ed. It was Vacant Horizon referring to them as a cover band. My apologies.

    D'OH :stunned

now thats a brain fart if there ever was one!

  6. Wha? I heard the Nokia shows (and saw some clips) and Bob was obviously, ahem, off. Still, how can they be a cover band of themselves? JK is solid and so is Russo. I like their take on the tunes (Furthur, as a whole) and couldn't care less if Jill is making the setlists (which are fine by me as they are all over the map and unpredictable). The mish-mash of the tunes/setlists is half the fun and the music is unique in it's interpretation of the songs. Overall, it varies quite a bit from GD but retains the essence. My take, anyway.

ed. And how is JK interpreting the tunes being "weird" any different than Stu Allen interpreting them in JGB. If anything is weird, it's that a Jerry Garcia Band has no Jerry Garcia in it. For the record, I love Stu's playing and voice.

I never referred to them as a cover band. And you are right about the JGB without Jerry-it is weird.

Seeing JK sing mountain dew at a festie was just weird-Hard to explain, but Furthur just gets less interesting each time-like I said, I always have a fun seeing bobby and phil, but musically, it just doesnt grab me-it feels hollow. Seeing Melvin and Stu in a bar is more musically satisfying if that makes any sense.

And for the record, I enjoyed the dead tour in 09-even though I am not a warren fan.

  7. You may be upset, but there is no reason to use that word.

We already talked about that a few pages back. Do you really want a bio-film of Jerry? I don't.

    sorry you are right

she brings out the worst in me

its not about the film so much as it is the greediness

  8. I'll be catching JGB tomorrow night and/or Friday. They play out here a ton (usually NYE, too). Have caught them many times and then never fail.

re: Furthur. The shows I caught last spring were fantastic. I (still) never understand the GD cover band comments. They're playing GD tunes for chrissakes! They have new tunes, as well, plus covers by other bands. It is what it is. Comparing it to GD is futile. I'll be catching the Red Rocks shows. I'm just looking for a decent night of music, some dancing, and some good times hanging with my gal and friends.

well heck, I can have a good time at just about any show-and I get your point-and thats what happened with me at coney island-the atmosphere, the people I was with and the SONGS-made it a grate evening

cant say the same about the nokia or outside lands shows

but hey, justin bieber could be playing red rocks and it would be fun!

    Safe travels and enjoy!

  9. For Pearl Jam's 20th Birthday, A Bridge School Gig

    yeah

the band did not plan anything for the 20th anniversary of its first gig

the bridge thing is just a coincidence-truthfully

but they are planning something for next year

crashious-the hoodie dude-has been working on a hoodie that incorporates designs from the first real tour-which was in 1991

there will be something next year-probably the same as the last couple of years-three weeks in the US, three weeks in another part of the world

but its encouraging that they are trying to sneak into the studio with all the other stuff going on

EV should have some time on his hands to write some new songs

    and FYI

better days is an EV song-written for the movie eat pray love

  10. who is in JGB? i need to check them out. i know melvin had some gig with steve kimock at some point.

    http://www.jgbband.com/blog/

melvin and the ladies from the JGB still tour

    small venues

Ive seen them twice in the past two years, and its a great, low key, heap of fun.

Ive heard that the Donna shows with the zen tricksters are also grate-but I have never seen them.

Yeah, something is not right with furthur. Its weird. Maybe its because (rumor has it) Jill Lesh writes the setlists. Maybe its because the whole JK thing is odd. I had a grate time at one of the shows, walked out of two of them-which Ive never done before.

I really liked the 09 dead with warren-despite the outrageous prices. Im done with the experiment until mickey and billy are back on the bus.

Yeah Aman, I would never pay to see furthur at MSG. Maybe if I had never seen them before and had nothing else to do.

  11. just got back from a couple of weeks in SF

saw furthur at the outside lands festie-and as much as I hate to say it

it was not good-fourth time seeing them and by far the least satisfying

maybe it was because they followed MMJ

maybe it was because I expected more in golden gate park-they setting was perfect

maybe its because I dont want to hear JK sing morning dew-travesty!

maybe its because the song selection was so poor for a festie (although they did a smokin let it grow)

great to see bobby and phil in golden gate park-but Im done with furthur

Id rather go see the JGB with stu allen in a small bar (highly recommended)

    Bring back ratdog please!

    Aman-thanks for the updates!

  12. I wanted to go to this event so bad

but no way Im trekking out to spend the weekend in NA Ma without a bit more

great concept-I LOVE the idea of a wilco fest

but the musical end of the spectrum (in terms of content and volume) was just a bit weak IMHO

  13. yeah, no dream it's over or something so strong, no I got you (do they ever play any split enz stuff?)

    but nobody seemed to mind

free show, 75 minutes, everybody dug it

and i actually never heard one person bark out for one of the hits, so that was cool

thats what I mean by self indulgent

Neil always plays what he wants to play-and he always plays a large chunk of new tunes-not the songs he knows the crowds want to hear-and they generally do not play enz tunes

Im not complaining-they put on a fantastic show-but id love to hear more of the deeper cuts from woodface (there goes god or italian plastic for example). They did play hole in the river from the first record.

Wow, no "Don't Dream It's Over"? That's on the 1st record. That could be construed as self-indulgent. How many people's emotional attachment to that band begins with that song? Not playing it is satisfying themselves more than the audience.

    Precisely. Well said.

  14. saw them on monday at the bowery ballroom and it was fantastic

the new record sounded really good

self indulgent set as usual, but enough "hits" to keep you interested

    25 songs, almost three hours

    Neil is always fantastic live

highlight was a funked up "chocolate cake" and a beautiful "fall at your feet"

  15. Well Futhur was better than I expected.

They sound pretty good, the got a little lost in the latter part of the second set-but over all a solid show

nightmare outside that coney island venue

surreal hearing and seeing the band with the cyclone, wonder wheel, the old parachute jump and the ocean in the background

    good time

    6/26 MCU park, brooklyn, NY

Set 1: 1. Chinacat Sunflower> 2. I Know You Rider 3. Black Throated Wind 4. Mully Gully> 5. High Time 6. Loose Lucy 7. Throwing Stones 8. One More Saturday Night

    Set 2:

    Encore: 1. Brokedown Palace $

    $= Kenny Brooks on Saxophone.

  16. JK is really a lot more than a Jerry clone. He's got his own style and has been allowed to (and felt more comfortable in his own shoes through this) to do his own thing. He struggled last fall when he came in to the band, imo, because he likely was trying to fill those shoes too closely. He really is an excellent guitarist and does his own thing. I was heavily impressed with the shows last spring. Even shit like Truckin was all-out and with a new vibe.

    Enjoy the music.

I know-the guy is very talented-I dont think he struggled last fall but agree he was trying to emulate Jerry way too much-which was kinda weird for me.

But I am looking forward to hearing them play again. I dont over analyze these shows, I just go and have a good time-should be a beautiful summer evening.

Last nights set looks good on paper

    Rochester 6/25

Set 1: 1. Not Fade Away 2. Here Comes Sunshine 3. Feel Like A Stranger 4. Truckin 5. Feelin Alright (?) 6. Strawberry Fields Forever 7. Cosmic Charlie

  17. well Im going to catch furthur tomorrow and the alphabet soup after party (rumor has it we may see Chimenti and Weir there)

    we shall see

perhaps I might enjoy JK more when Im just hanging back in a baseball stadium and listening to the music and not seeing a jerry clone up close

should be a nice evening anyway!
