Were the Clash that unpopular in the USA in 1984 or was that a one off type of show? I thought they would be in a way larger venue by then!I would have loved to see them..just starting to get into them (I am very late to the game)

    truthfully

I did not know much about the clash beyond combat rock and london calling at the time. A buddy's older brother took us. I was 16 and used a fake ID to get in.

Yes, this was with the "new" line up.

Not sure why they played such a small place, but I do remember it being the most packed and craziest floor I have ever experienced. I also got in trouble for coming home so late-he he.

According to wiki, this show was part of a self-financed tour-could also explain the smaller venues.

    gotta love the internet

  2. Long long time ago (1984) I saw the clash at the agora ballroom in Hartford, CT-800 people

Smallest Wilco show-the chance show in poughkeepsie-700 people

    Arctic monkeys-mercury lounge nyc-250 people

Bob weir and ratdog-ridgefield playhouse, CT-500 people

Ive seen the posies a few times at maxwells in hoboken NJ-200 people

Joe jackson and Neil finn (separately) bowery ballrooom nyc-550 people

thats all I can remember at the moment

  3. I saw quite a few shows in '88, and while they were fun in general, nothing stands out as being special (unlike '87 or '89).

That 4 shows in 5 nights run at Alpine was the most BRUTALLY HOT run I ever caught. Someday if I get a scanner I will post pics. The best part of that run was that Dylan played there the night before the Dead run, and it was the best Dylan show I ever saw. SPINE-TINGLING.

aside from the Berkley run, oxford maine shows in 1988 were pretty darn good-Jerry sounded good that summer!

  4. God, I need a smoke after all that.

Hartford tickets were up at 9:58 and I got 4 but I can't understand where they are. They say Orchestra Level, Presale Section D, Row F, 209-212. But looking at the seating chart, I can't place that:

    Bushnell Seating Chart

Also got 2 GA for Montclair Saturday. No luck with Philly.

    Whoo! Whoowhoo!

scroll down to the orch layout

    center orch section

you are 10th row on the right aisle

actually you are right behind me Im row E seat 211

I got a single (I will be there for business and just decided to grab a ticket)

  5. you mean like Pearl Jam are doing all this upcoming year? :brow

    that remains to be seen

but they certainly appear to be doing it in Europe-which is fine by me

I dont begrudge pj for playing festivals when they do things like the four nights at the spectrum

but the ticket prices-thats where PJ is disappointing me.

anyway, I hope SG does tour and that they play some cool, medium sized venues at semi-reasonable prices

  6. well this could be a good thing as SG was a great band

but if they just go out and play festivals in a money grab, I want no part of it.

If they are content to play their music in medium sized venues at reasonable prices, then I am fully on board.

AS far as RNR HOF goes, SG has a long way to go.

  7. Where does this info come from though? Is just speculation? Seems believable although I don't get who the fuck picked these guys. I think everyone of us could have picked a better band in a 10 seconds.

As for Wasserman, the guy is a beast on the bass and like you said actually helped make Ratdog more then a dead cover band. I'd be soooooooooooooo down for some weir/wasserman acoustic dates.

Hell I'm down for anything these guys wanna do as long as they bring something new to the table. While Phil and Freinds was mostly a dead cover band at least Phil was constantly coming up with new arrangements and players. I wouldn't even care if they weren't playing "new" material as long as they bring something new to it. Like is bob and wasserman did a bunch of covers or phil did something well ANYTHING.

ETA: I loved what the Rhythm Devils line up was doing (not lyrically or vocally but musically). It was fresh but that women stunk.)

Source: totally unverified ratdog board chatter.

Never checked out the devils. I liked the recent P&F lineup with Jackie-but did not really care for the past line ups.

For the most part, I have found something good in all of the post GD bands. Just something about JK trying too hard to emulate JG rubs me the wrong way. Its like they just watched Mark Wahlberg in Rockstar and the light went on. DSO is a fun night out, it is what it is-but seeing him onstage with Bobby and Phil, I dunno, its almost creepy.

  8. Man I hope not.

I can't believe Phil signed on for this shit. From what I've herd Bobby is taking the reigns with this band. I know its wishful thinking but I wish Phil would do more experimental music, like the one off show with Molitz/Molo and that trumpet player whose name is coming up blank.

As for Jamica, I mean I get the attraction I've just never thought about traveling to a Ratdog show, let alone dropping a few grand.

Phil and Booby wanted "the dead" to continue touring.

Rumor has it Billy refused and Mickey kinda said, "well if hes not coming neither am I" and that phil and bobby have committed to playing together for the next couple of years. Warren and Jackie do their own thing, so they scrapped this band together. It is kinda cheesy.

I wish ratdog would bring back Wasserman. Seeing RD in small venues and doing their own thing was awesome.

Once Robin signed on and they started playing more and more Jerry tunes, RD lost an edge IMHO.

  9. Coincidentally, that guitar is known as the "Alembic Further" and retails for a pretty sizable chunk. Are we sure it's not the original, though? Ryan Adams was playing the original with The Dead.....

nah as I understand it, it is a carvin made custom for JK

  10. I can't believe people would fly to Jamica for Ratdog. I've seen them six or so times and have to debate weather to see them when they play a few blocks from my house. They are SOOOOOOOOOO inconsistent. The last time I saw them they laid down one of the bests sets I've seen any grateful dead offshoot play, set two though was one of the worst.

Anyone listened to any of these Furthur shows? I haven't been to excited due to fake Jerry and Jay Lanes presence.

I went to opening night at the hammerstein. Not bad, but not good either. Jay actually plays mostly percussion and its actually one of the better parts of the show. Fake Jerry playing fake wolf? Well Im not loving it although his playing does sound a lot like JG.

  11. Didn't hear that but that's cool as it's a well-done album (mostly all GD tunes, anyway). Garcia, Phil, etc. all contributed to it, too. I looked into that Jamaica thing (this is the second year) and it looks like a complete blast with all room, food, drinks included. A buddy did it last year and still raves about it.

And Ratdog, in my opinion, gets (generally) better with age, though the Boulder show out here at the end of the summer got a really bd review from most in attendance....

they are playing Ace at the ratdog daze in negril

Jackie green has also signed on to do a few shows

they are having trouble selling the packages and just offered a discount

everyone says its a blast, and the shows are intimate

I see ratdog often. They are hit or miss. But every now and then you catch a really good one. Kinda like another band.

  12. it's a no win for these guys. i love bob and phil together. two distinct sounds that were destine to play together. the lead slot is just so tough for them. we don't want someone playing just like garcia. that would be weird, as you say. but we don't want someone coming in and ransacking the songs (enter warren haynes IMO). i think it worked best with Karan and Kimock. unfortunately, those guys don't seem to be part of this family. especially kimock. not to mention the fact that they have been pathetically under-rehearsed since the other ones days. i think hornsby got them into shape, but the dead and ratdog are just a mess. constant noodling and no discernible solos. at least garcia soloed. that's what we loved!

just some thoughts. they are coming to atlanta in feb and i'd like to see them in a small venue, but i am not spending double what i paid to see the dead in the 90s.

I loved Kimock with Ratdog and wish he was sitting in with furthur.

And I enjoyed Warren in the spring-it was better than I thought it would be.

Im not big on them trying to recreate the GD sound, but prefer when RD or PF create new interpretations of the songs

I loved when Wasserman was in RD and they were playing small clubs-that was my favorite post GD group.

  13. I'm kicking around the idea of seeing Furthur in Chicago. It would be great to see them play at the Auditorium Theatre. However the ticket price is $65.00, which is fine, but I don't know if I want spend that much. But it would be sweet seeing them at the Auditorium.

yeah I got a ticket outside the venue last night for $70, a bit steep, but less than "the dead"

phil and bob sound grate together, chimenti is fantastic and the two drummers really groove-this band sounds really good and it will get better as they play more

but the fake Jerry thing is just a little weird

  14. Furthur

    Encore:

    Touch of Grey

they sounded pretty good, good band and I really like the percussion

but having John K from DSO up there was a little weird, almost creepy

he is decent enough, but he emulates Jerry just a bit too much

  15. yeah they just started playing no way on this mini tour for the first time in many many years-I was lucky to catch it at the 10/28 show in philly

brain of J does get played a few times each tour

the ACL broadcast was pretty good

eds voice was shot and the mix was funky-Mike was loud and Stone was very low in the mix

but still a decent show-red mosquito with Ben Harper was great

  16. but the Beastie Boys were certainly not considered a 'college band' along with the likes of the Meat Puppets and REM.

Of course, this thread is about personal preference, and perception. I voted for REM and I wasn't even in college in the '80s. But in 1987, REM made me wish I was in college. If you consider the Beastie Boys your favorite '80s college band, then I stand aside. I just like talking about the Beastie Boys. :D

for me, no question its REM

I agree that the BBs were not played on "college" radio-but pauls boutique was huge at my school in 89-90

you could also add the cure to the list
