  1. Wilco LPs are too expensive.

Yeah, I do not understand the price point of new vinyl these days. I just bought the double Plant/Krauss "Rising Sand" for $15.99, a older Yo La Tengo for $17.00, but The Drive-By Truckers last one was $29.99 and the Wilco's are a lot. I guess they realize vinyl is a fringe thing that people who love it will pay for,

  2. The sound is excellent. If you don't like Summerteeth in general, though, you probably won't like the record. ;)

Oh I love Summerteeth. I'm just wondering why it would sound so much better since it was never mastered for vinyl in the first place. It was made for a digital format right from the start. So did they actually go back and remaster it for this release is my question?

  3. Have to agree with all the previous posts about how good Summerteeth is on vinyl, it's a revelation.

So since the original wasn't mixed for vinyl in the first place, does this mean this was actually remixed for vinyl? It must have been if all you guys are saying it sounds so different.

  4. i don't mind the opening part of the song, but when it goes into the "did i saaaaaaaaaaaaay that i neeeeeeeeed yoooooooou... did i saaaaaaaay that i waaaaaaaaaaaant you" bit, my BS detector is triggered a bit and i feel like i'm listening to Coldplay or The Fray or something. :ermm

from the Promo video version of Just Breathe i was thinking that i'd hate Ed's voice on the verses even too, cuz he sounded so nasally and strained on it, but thankfully it's a little more restrained in the studio.

Well call me an MOR sap then. It's my favorite track on the disc.

  5. The stereo mixes we are hearing now were done by George Martin in the 1980s.

Well, did he actually change the panning and stuff in the 80's or just clean them up? I was referring more to the "effects" of the stereo in post-Rubber Soul stuff.

Also, what is the deal with the '65 stereo mixes included on the mono Help and Rubber Soul? Are these somehow deemed better than the '80's mixes? If so, why weren't they used on all of the stereo remasters?

  6. I just cranked up "Helter Skelter" in mono. All the hairs on my arms are still standing up. Wow.

The weird thing with the mono vs. stereo is that some tracks sound better in mono, and some just don't. I think Magical Mystery Tour in mono sounds simply dull. I realize the arguments, but they really did do a good job mixing these in stereo back in the day, whether the and was involved or not. The stereo effects on many songs simply add an whole other dimention to the tracks.

  7. heard the new album, Joy. it's pretty MOR. phish used to have good songs as well as chops. they still have chops, but the songs are gone.

I've heard Joy and I totally disagree with you. I think the songwriting is very strong and it may be their most tuneful album well.....ever. Is it you don't hear the "songs" or just don't like them? Compared to Round Room, this is a Phish masterpiece.

  8. Most of the sixties music, at least before 1967, is only great in mono, because it was made in mono, for mono gear. All was conceived for mono impact.

Stereo was born with artists like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, using the possibility of stereo effects.

While The Beatles may have recorded in Mono (up 'til "Yellow Sub"), I find their stereo releases to be quite inventive and exciting to the point where I really miss it when I'm listening to the mono versions. I'd have to think Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix engineeres obviously took their cues from The Beatles stereo versions.

  9. I just (for the first time) listened to all of "Sgt Pepper" in mono (Dr Ebberts rip). I found it.....interesting. I liked some of it more then my well worn stereo version (clearer vocals, heavier drums, punchier bass) but I really missed the stereo sound on much of it. I also didn't think it was THAT different as many claim.

It really felt like listening in black and white as opposed to listening in color. Admittedly, I have heard the stereo version for most of my life so I find it difficult to really "hear" it another way.

  10. I've always assumed any funky shit I heard was on purpose. Apparently not.

Why not on purpose? Where does it say these were screw ups? If we can hear them, I'm sure the band and engineer's did too and didn't fix them. Why wouldn't they have been fixed in the '87 cd releases?
