  1. Another rambling post from today. Ryan trying to "explain' himself:

"Friends and Fans (and Internet Lurking Music News Hacks)

I am very sorry if my blog post concerning my need to walk away for however long from cardinals( and from doing music related to the music i have made during my solo career and during my very long and substantially frustrating time at my former label ) was alarming or shocking or seemed off base. it was not my intention to be dramatic. I feel like i am entitled to my feelings and that i certainly do not deserve to be further ridiculed for my deteriorating inner ear issues and the physical pain that goes along with that.

perhaps my emotional overview of the things i resented and regretted was too much but this is also my choice if i choose to share here at THE CARDINALS BLOG as I am an original member of the band and I feel just as entitled to my opinion and my desire to be open about why i would choose to pull back now, after SUPPORTING THIS BAND AND ITS CONCEPTS when i might have continued during that time as a solo artist.

my reasoning is sound as is my dedication to what i feel is right for me and my thoughts and feelings are valid. i am a human being and have the basic desire to be well and not suffer any longer pain or anxiety that is unnecessary when my efforts might be better used and longer lasting in an environment where i would be happier therefor more helpful to others for longer.

what is so funny is, people i almost never speak to, people i played music with even who are supposed to be my friends, people in bands i grew up admiring who i went out of my way to support even to my own detriment called me today or send texts- the WORST being

  2. Tell me "Outlaw Pete" won't be amazing live. Not sure why some are dissing that one.

Whether you love or hate the disc, you have to admit it's the strangest album he's made. That's gotta account for something in Bruce-world. It's 100x more interesting than "Magic" was/is.

  3. Another new song, "Surprise, Surprise" is out there. Man, I'm really worried about this release....

LOVE "Surprise, Surprise". Classic radio-friendly pop song. How can you not like that song??

Folks, he ain't pulling out a "Backstreets" at this point. Embrace that and enjoy the music.....

  4. i mostly agree with that although i would say that A Live One works well as a compilation. in fact, i thought it was a specific show for years until i looked into it further.

While A Live One is a nice collection of songs, it certainly doesn't feel like a normal Phish set. That's always been my problem with it.

  5. Well, fwiw, I don't care much for Radiohead but Andrew is one of my favorite artists.

Anonanimal does remind me of Radiohead somewhat, but that's about the only track that does.

i'd argue that any Radiohead influence/comparisons should be attributed to Dosh, who was doing that sort of thing long long before RH ever picked up a sampler ;)

I was actually thinking from the vocal side of things. And also how the songs have very deceptive melodies.

  6. OK, so as someone who is first listening to AB from this release I have to say I'm digging it a lot. Knowing nothing about the guy except that he played a bunch of shows with Wilco, I'm picking up a big Radiohead-vibe on this disc. Am I wrong on that?

It's making me want to seek out his older material. What should I start with? Does all his stuff sound similar or is each album different ala-Wilco? Thanks.

  7. I haven't listened to this yet, but it looks interesting. My guess is that a lot of it is aud, which I can't really stand to listen to, but we'll see...

Wow, it appears that 2-28-03 was a great show according to those choices. That's a weird compilation. Why not just grab those specific shows? Phish shows were all about the ebb and flow imo.

  8. I think teleprompters and music stands are pretty commonplace these days many major artists (Springsteen & Dylan come to mind). I know Sting had one during The Police reunion.

It's really a shame because there is no way a singer is singing their best when they're reading the words. Singing the lyrics to something you know by heart is a totally different thing than reading them.

  9. It still amazes me that Warren plays in three bands at more or less the same time - Gov't Mule, The Allman Brothers (who just announced the dates for their 2009 Beacon run), and now The Dead.

Well, since all his solos sound the same maybe it isn't so hard. Sorry, not a Warren fan.

  10. Does Dylan's "Tell Tale Signs"count because if it does. I have no idea why it isn't on any of these lists. Everything else pales by comparison.

And why no love for Jackson Browne, Bob Mould, or Lindsey Buckingham this year? I know they aren't cool with the Pitchfork indie-hipster croud but they all made fantastic discs this year. Why do all these end-of-the-year lists always have bands no one will listen to in a year? It's like an exercise in "coolness" or something.

  11. I'm pretty sure Colin Meloy doesn't give a rats ass what people think of his music. He writes what he likes and if it's a little goofy, more power to him. Music doesn't always have to be "important" and "serious". The song wasn't meant to be the "Sam Stone" of indie rock.

And they are goofy, you can't deny that. Look at some of their band photos and how they dress up.

I saw them live on ACL and goofy is that last thing I would call them. In fact, they seemed so damn serious it turned me off to ever listening to them again. I'm not a big fan of epic history yarns with my rock and roll....

  12. I didn't say I can't understand a word he's saying. I said I can almost never hear him. That's because his voice is too muddled to be heard over the totally normal and ordinary background noises in my house and car. I've listened to his show in my house and in my car. I found him very difficult to hear in both situations. Perhaps that is a production issue that has since been corrected. I wouldn't know, I stopped tuning in since it took too much effort to hear him.

When I have been able to hear him, he's been pretty interesting. I recall him talking about merr during a christmas episode, and what an excellent gift that would be. That was interesting to me, since I'd never really thought about merr or what it's used for.

I'm not trying to bait anyone. I apologize if it came across that way.

Yeah, maybe it isn't good for background noise. I look at this show like the old days, when people had no TV and used to just sit around the radio and listen. Try actually listening to it instead of having it on in the background.....you will like it. I crank it in the car and have no issues. I just tell the kids they can't talk when Bob is speaking :-)

  13. I never did get around to posting this: the setlist from the Ratdog show I saw last week.
