  1. You guys are gonna cost me some money!! Some great recommendations. I'm gonna pick up that 'Mile Benjamin Anothony Robinson' record on the basis of that album cover alone!!. Another band people are always recommending to me are 'The National'. Any views of them out there?
  2. In terms of Sparklehorse I would definatly check out 'Vivadixiesubmarinetranmissionplot'. Its a classic album. 'Good Morning Spider' and 'Its a wonderful life' are also worth looking for.
  3. Sounds interesting. Do you have anything on those comps that not readily available? Both M.Ward and Sparklehorse are genius.
  4. Northline is a great read aswell. The copy I read (from my local library in Shrewsbury!) has a CD with it of music Willy had written inspired by the book. I'm interested to find out more about Vic Chestnutt. He did a song on the Sparklehorse/Dangermouse album which I loved. I'll Check out that recommendation.
  5. I have them and I think they are great. However, they have seemed to get a lot of negative press from people who know what they're talking about, in audio terms. Sound good to me though. I think you're right about Turn It On Again. The two-disk SACD versions of the albums have great documentaries on them as well as some nice extras.
  6. Thanks for that. I have 'Aeroplane' and love it (If somewhat intense!!) but have never ventured any further with NMH. Is their other album worth picking up?
  7. Thanks for that. I'll try to check some of those out. Whilst I disagree, I respect your hatred of the Decemberists. They do seem to spilt opinion sonewhat!
  8. I think there was some good stuff post-Duke but it was just a bit thin on the ground. I also feel that, in a pop context, Invisible Touch is a really good album. Not to my taste, but still very good. 'Home By The Sea' is a good tune, as is 'Domino' and 'The Brazilian'. I was reading about the Duke album recently and apparently a few of the tracks were originaly written to be one long song, a kind of eighties 'Suppers Ready'. That could have been interesting. I believe the songs that were originaly all linked were Behind The Line, Duchess, Guide Vocal, Dukes Travels and Duke End. P.s....Birm
  9. Hi guys. I'm looking for a bit of inspiration with regards good bands/artists to start exploring. On the basis of the below list of my favourites, what records do you think I should pick up next? Any recommendations (artist and specific records) are much appreciated. * M. Ward * Lambchop * Wilco * Decemberists * Sparklehorse * Micah P. Hinson * My Morning Jacket
  10. Looks like any chance of a proper Genesis tour in the near future may have gone. Phil Colins has had to retire from the drum-stool (all he was good for?) due to ongoing back problems. Aparently he did some seroius damage to his vertebrae on the last re-union tour and won't be playing again. Can live without the re-union shows tbh but I would really love to see them back in the studio with Gabriel and Hackett as I feel they could create something interesting. Maybe an update of Selling England By The Pound with some social commentry on the state of the UK at the moment. In reference to the a
  11. Not sure if this counts but there were a band that went to my school called 'Manson'. They had a few hits (wide-open space?) and a couple of pretty big albums in the UK in the late nineties but seem to have disapeered of the radar recently.
  12. Good to here the positive vibes for M.Ward. I'm a big fan of Matt but I thought his last record lacked a bit of spark. Certainly not as good as 'Vincent' or 'Transistor Radio'. Looking forward to the guys hitting the UK in the near future.
  13. Responding to an earlier post, but I am really loving 'Tennessee Fire'. Some great songs on there. I still feel 'Evil Urges' was a major backwoods step for the band. Some of the experimental tracks are good but there are some really bland moments on record (Thank You Too, Librarian, Look At You, I'm Amazed). That said, 'Touch Me Part 2' is a classic MMJ track. I'll be very interested to see what they come up with next. Jim (Yim?) seems to be evolving into a Curtis Mayfield/Erika Badu soul-man. Wasn't overly impressed with the George Harrison tribute record either really but am looking forward
  14. How about Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Assorted Love Songs. Nells would be all over that!! Other than that I'm thinking Neil Young - 'Trans'. There are some great songs on that album that could be redone with a different context. In terms of Dylan I think they could do something with 'Street Legal'.
  15. This one hasn't really grab me in the way previous Eels records have. It's better than most albums released this year but certainly not one of E's best.
  16. Looks like the guys are lined up to play Neil Young's Bridge Shows this year. Apart from Monsters of Folk it is a really dodgy line up this year. Chris Martin and Gwen Stefani as headline acts??? http://www.thrasherswheat.org/2009/09/bridge-school-concert-lineup-for-2009.html
  17. Looks like Grant Lee Phillips has a new album coming out next month. Always been a big fan of his work, both solo and with 'Buffalo'. The first three Grant Lee Buffalo albums are classic, especially 'Mighty joe Moon'. Back in the day they formed part of a trio of bands, along with Wilco and The Jayhawks, that formed my taste for what was then called 'americana'(?). His last album was so-so but he has put out good solo albums such as 'Mobilize' and 'Virginia Creeper'. The details are on his website. http://www.grantleephillips.com/
  18. Real Gone is amazing. It didn't seem to get much praise when it came out but its great. Rain Dogs is my favourite Tom album but the boys do love 'Underground' off Swordfish...Its a great song for stomping about pretending to be a monster!!.
  19. My wife will let me listen to anything as long as its not Tom Waits!! My youngest son (3yr old)loves a bit of Wilco and is forever shouting "Wilco we love you baby"!! Strangly, both my young boys love Tom Waits and will do 'Tom Waits' dancing when I put on 'Bone Machine' or 'Real Gone'.
  20. Can't really argue with that list. Some great songs. Nothing from 'Sky Blue Sky' though. Lots from 'Ghost' which would get my vote for best album. 'Ashes' is becoming one of my all-time favourite tunes, especially after seeing the version on the new DVD.
  21. Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Country Home (The whole of Ragged Glory Really); Aerosmith: Young Lust (Cheesy but Rockin'); Jane's Addiction: Up The Beach; Faith No More: Woodpecker's From Mars; Genesis: Watchers Of The Sky (Strange choice I know, but it does it for me!); My Morning Jacket: Wordless Chorus (or Xmas Curtain); Black Crowes: Remedy (Southern Harmony is such a good album); Sparklehorse: Pig!! Tom Waits: Hoist That Rag; Neutral Milk Hotel: Holland 1945; Tricky: Black Steel; John Coletrane: A Love Supreme (Amazing when played loud..anoys the neighbours tho...);
  22. I don't think its a great record to be honest. I would love it to be but I do feel its lacking somewhat. Certainly a step down from Yankee/Ghost/Shy Blue. However, its still a lot better than most albums I heard this year. There's too many averaage songs on it to be considered great. Also, as mentioned above, the lyrics don't do anything for me at all. Its all just opinion though....and I still hate the album cover. I'm not into this 'Wilco are fun, don't take us seriously' vibe.
  23. Lots of references to David Lynch but no-one seems to have mentioned 'Inland Empire'. That is one creepy movie. Its not scary but the atmosphere in that movie made me feel a real sense of anxiety and dread. I physcally felt unconfortable watching it. My wife had to leave the room and she wasn't even watching it!! Just the soundtrack and noises made her move. I've seem it a couple of times and I've still not really got a clue as to what is going on. It is a facinating film all the same. Mulholland Drive is also pretty unsettling. Sometimes being confused by a movie like recent Lynch efforts is
  24. I agree entirely. I was just drawing atention to it to ensure no one was considering paying the guy to burn them. I'm suprised e-bay allows this sort of this tbh.
  25. Morning Guys. Looking on e-bay (U.K) there is a chap selling a four-disk set of Wilco non-album tracks. Theres no picture but I am assuming someone has just burned some cdr's and are flogging them for a tenner. The seller is from Spain. This is the track listing: "Four discs containing all rare tracks from Wilco. Brilliant artwork, excellent sound. WILCO. Non Album Tracks 1 01 The TB Is Whipping Me “Red Hot & Country Aids Benefit CD” (Wilco with Syd Straw) 02 Childlike & Evergreen “Soil X Sample Promo 45LP #19” (Produced by J. Tweedy. Recorded In The Living Room) 03 Someone Else'
