  1. The wife and I have been looking at houses as of late and are going to take the plunge soon methinks. She's really been doing the research. I call it her porn because she pours over classifieds, websites, etc. and I'm constantly catching her lol! She finally has me up and out looking at houses and we found one that although needs work, is well within our means and has major potential. I would have to have the basement finished and a shower put in on the second bathroom at the start. All other renovations could be 5 -8 years down the road. All the while we gain equity I guess. Being that its
  2. The uke is really not that hard to learn. I have a couple of songs down already. Like I said they bring out some things that the guitar does not for me. I'm currently working on Strawberry Fields, Something, I'll See You In My Dreams, Wild Horses, etc. Lots of really good resources out there on the ol' net for the uke. I've joined a couple of msg boards and all are super helpful! That version of Gently Weeps is the Holy Grail for uke players. Jake is on another planet!
  3. Thanks row - I thought the thread petered out - I've met with some good tones and some off the wall tones. Not to say that that is a bad thing! =P
  4. Its a pretty great little instrument! I am in love with the sound and the feel of it - i've been playing guitar for 15 plus years and it is different. The backround helps as with any string instrument. The uke makes you think differently and brings something out of me that doesn't normally happen on the guitar. (Not to say I would ever go uke over guitar - I'm glad I don't have to make that choice.) Anyways - was just trying to pick some members minds!
  5. Shoveled out the trucks, hit the bank, and am now couching it and looking forward to relaxing! It was a nice day off of work! We don't get any snow days and we should have had in the past. But overall we've been lucky in NYC over the last couple of years. Going to enjoy!
  6. Got back from Kaua'i last week and while over there picked up a real nice tenor uke. Does anyone on the board have one and if so what songs do you do? I'm trying to build up my list. Any Wilco numbers done on the 'uke?
  7. It has been 5 loooong years since the NYC Public School System has closed for snow! I couldn't be happier not having to go into work this morning. I would have celebrated and maybe had some beers instead of going to bed early last night but I can't complain. Needless to say - its beautiful out now that I don't have to go out in it. But I think the wife and I are venturing out to the bank as we are going to try and buy a house. Exciting stuff. How does your area deal with snow? Many snow days? I find that NJ/Long Island close when there's a flurry in the air. NYC never. How goes by you?
  8. I want to go back too! It was fantastic. I did bring back a 'uke as I said and that makes me feel I have a part of the island with me - and i'm getting pretty good on it too! =)
  9. I stand corrected. Its been a long time since I caught the show. I'm still pissed that he left Deadwood in the lurch to do John from Cincinatti! (Which I enjoyed but not as much as Deadwood.) Regardless I do beleve it is Sol Star then that plays Dustin. Rewatched both episodes twice this weekend tunring people on to it - there are little nuggets in every scene!
  10. He was the brother of Seth Bullock on Deadwood. Weird looking for sure. Was the wife on the show in that Still Standing show? She looks very familiar.
  11. That dance scene was out of control. The show has promise. Anyone catch the Life & Time's of Tim? That was hilarious as well a sleeper for sure. And Lucky Louie - probably on par with EB&D in the raunch area. Good stuff.
  12. Here are some more: "> "> And this is the waterfull we jumped off of! ">
  13. We didn't eat at the place with the cats but were basically all over that island. It is simply and amazing place! I know it sounds cliche but it kinda changed me a bit. I feel a little more lei'd back. (awful use of hawaiian). I guess that happens when one unwinds on vacation. It is a fantastic place to hang. Here are some photos. Thanks to VC'ers for helping out - i must be lagged still. Hope you enjoy: "> ">
  14. Thank you so much. No I understand. KodakGallery didn't give me an HTML link. Here are some of my attempts at photography from our recent trip to Kaua'i last week. It was awesome!!! Na Pali Coast Hike: "> Na Pali Coast from Boat Tour: ">
  15. Can anyone help with uploading photos to the board? Can't place them in the msg. Any help appreciated. Thanks...
  16. Got back last night...simply put it was amazing. Couldn't believe how awesome it was. It was something else and thank you for all the tips everyone. I will post pictures as soon as I upload them and figure out how to put them on here! =P I did buy a 'uke but it is not all Koa. For a new 'uke player I couldn't see paying over $600. I didn't stop at Scotty's although I passed it multiple times. I got the Uke in Old Town Koloa at a 'uke show there from a guy named Joe. Couldn't have been nicer and got a good deal with a nice case. Planning on learning more chords this week once I beat the jet
  17. Ahhh ukes!!! I'm so glad someone mentioned those. Any tips on buying a uke? I've been drawn to ukes by George Harrison - I've never played one so any tips on that would also be appreciated. (I have been playing guitar since age 7 so have fretboard knowledge.) So much to do before we leave - the excitement level is getting up there. Thank you all for the pics and tips. Excellent stuff!
  18. Just finished "The Reader" and thought it was a guick read with a catching storyline if somewhat predictable. Also reading "Tried By War" about Lincoln - a bit long in the tooth but interesting nonetheless. . .
  19. Hey all.... The wife + sister/brother in law and I are hitting Kauai this Saturday from NYC. A very much needed oasis in this cold winter. Looking for any recommendations in regards to cool bars, places, things to do, etc. We're planning to zip line, golf, beach, and partake in some lazy afternoon drinking - you know the casual vacation. Been doing a lot of research but it doesn't hurt getting tips from those that have been there and have the inside straight. . . any help much appreciated.
  20. As a newly married man - July '08 - I suggest as others have to discuss it with her. I don't see this as being a major issue. All vacations are awesome and honeymoons are suped up vacations to the max (we spent a week in Pureto Vallarta and will be going to Kuaii, Hawaii next week). However, at the end of every vacation big or small there is, I feel, that sense of wanting a return to normalcy. What better way to have a little bit of America in a foreign land than going to see Wilco? I also agree to make it the end of a wonderful day filled with all sorts of pregame activities - sightseeing,
  21. Its pluging into the normal channel and then pluggin it into the vibrato channel in hope of overdriving the amp. I've heard of people doing it but also heard about risks involved. I'm not sure what those are that's why I started the topic. Also, if people do use this method what if any are some good tips?
  22. Hey all! I have a 1967 Fender Twin Reverb Amp and have been trying to get new sounds out of it. I've never done bridged the regular channel to the vibrato channel before today and got some interesting sounds when trying different combinations. I usually use the vibrato channel. Anyways, not a whole lot of info on this topic on the net. She's a Silverface no master volume. Any thoughts? Ideas? Tips? Concerns? Thanks all! Matty www.myspace.com/mattylyons1 BreezyGrass
  23. The 2nd link is quasi bluegrass but focusing more on originals of the first link. The last is a Dead/Jam type band. We are playing the Red Lion on Bleecker this Thursday night 1/22/09 if anyone's in NYC. 7 - 10pm. Gonna be a good time...great thread - gonna check out some of your guys' music. Hope you enjoy...Mattywww.myspace.com/mattylyons1BreezyGrassMontgomery Burns Band
  24. No not a knee injury. Lol! I didn't realize she used stands - I've seen her on SoundStage on the Rave channel, which rocks btw, and she wasn't using one then. But I believe that if its used just as a point of reference its great. She seemed to be glued to it. A good, if short, set. Stayed up and checked out Old Crowe Medicine Show. Wasn't for me.
